No offense with the Nerd thing...I found t his graphics card for 146$ supposed to be compatible with the Radeon X800 XL 512MB:
Gigabyte Radeon Sapphire X800XL 512MB DDR2 DVI PCI Express x16 Video Card
Anyone care to tell me if this is a dumb purchase?

Let me understand, you already have a X800XL card and want to add another X800XL to use it via crossfire ?
Anyways my recommendation to you is to get a new generation card, the X800XL compares to a Nvidia 6800.
If you need ATI:
- Radeon HD 3870 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 at $159.99 ($144.99 after rebate) or another at $164.99 ($144.99 after rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125086
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121217
Or in the Nvidia line you can buy a GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 for $179.99 ($149.99 after rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150252
Both cards will blow away the X800XL in single or crossfire configuration.
Regards

I don't have either card - I have the NV 7900 GeForce with 256 - I want the upgrade - that 8800 seems sweet enough!

i got the 8800. It does magic.
I does get hot and requires a 400W power supply.
All worth it in the end though.

Either of Charly's cards will be a significant upgrade from a 7900. I'd go with the 8800GT personally, just because it's less of a pain than switching manufacturers--you should just be able to plug and go if you've already got updated nVidia drivers.
I'm going with a 512MB 8800GTS in my new box ($219.99 less $50 mail-in rebate)...it's a little overkill for FS2004, but better too much than too little. Plus I like the dual-slot design that shoots the hot air out the back of the case rather than inside.

I don't even have my machine parts yet (they're on the UPS truck ). I'll get FSX eventually, but not right away. If you've got a strong processor, an 8800GT should give you pretty good results in FSX; it uses nVidia's G92 core, which is the base of the new generation of 8800s (GT and the 512MB GTS) and 9x00 cards. If you're worried, the 8800GTS has more power than the 8800GT, but would run a good $60-$100 more.

I just finished a build with an E6850 8800GT PCIE2 w/1Gb of mem on it 4Gb Gskill PC8500 and i have to say it actually out performs my Q6700 with a 8800gtx 768Mb with 4 Gb of PC8500 in FSX if you can afford the extra 79 and the board is 2.0 compliant i would definitely look at this card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130351 If you can hold out til September and save up your money, the new generation cards will be mainstream and well worth it for a major upgrade.

Well, I have no FS2004 yet, but I can tell you that on this new box, I haven't found any of my games yet (mainly older stuff like WWII Online, EVE Online, Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft) that I can't hit the monitor's refresh of 60 fps at 1680x1050. This 8800GTS is just stupid fast. The 8800GT would merely be "fast."
One thing to keep in mind if you look at a double-slot card like the one Tony linked is size. The ones with the full-length plastic shroud run cooler and help your system run cooler because they vent the hot air out the back of the second slot, not into your case. But they eat up the PCI-E slot and the one next to it, so plan accordingly. And I don't know if an 8800GT is the same size, but an 8800GTS is HUGE. So long that it all but renders one of my mid-tower case's 3.5" drive bays unusable.

Yes Lewis it will eat up a slot depending on the mobo's configuration. heres a shot of the GT installed on an ABIT board. http://picasaweb.google.com/FC5452/TerrySBuild/photo?authkey=fxmkpXMaE-I#5199240817736661106 This is the board in Question. http://picasaweb.google.com/FC5452/TerrySBuild/photo?authkey=fxmkpXMaE-I#5199173829131745298 As you can see they located the two PCI slots at the bottom, add a second card and poof the top pci is gone Most people these days can get away without the extra PCI leaving you the room for a Kick butt Sound card instead Now if you really want the extra PCI slot, add some water cooling to it and you will get that slot back

very interesting.
I have 400W in my machine already - and I do have the space for that GTS8800....hmmmm
Can I run the old card in cohorts with this new one (if I get it)? I mean I have three monitors right now one running from the digital out, and two running of Matrox DualHead2Go on the Serial side. Can I run 4 monitors off the two cards and have teh two running off the higher speed card running the FSX processing and teh other two for viewing other stuff? or does it matter?

no nothing to do with SLI
I just wonder if using the two different video cards would be possible with my 4 monitors? Or if I get the new one (video card) I will just use my Matrox Dual Head

Drew,
I don't know what the specs are on that power supply, 400 is 400 the amps on the rail are what count, you may not have enough juice to do it, In essence it should be able to run like you want it, but power draw will be an issue. also the new cards the 8800GT are PCIE 2.0 which if out in a 1.0 slot will only run at 1.0 gaining you nothing.
