From this information - can anyone tell me what kind of RAM will fit and the Max amoutn - and if the information is not here - how/where do I go in the computer to find out without opening it up.
Little background - I was handed this computer and finally got it started - so I'm trying to find a cheap upgrade solution.

Ok 32 bit systems will only read up to 3.25GB of Ram if you go to 64bit it will run the 4GB of Ram.
No you cant go with 2 *2Gb chips. Maximum Memory Module Size 1024 MBytes which means 1 slot can only be 1GB of RAM
About the SIMM DIMM You have to take out one chip and check what speed the chip is running and what tipe of memory.

This Board was used In HP models and will hold 8 gigs of DDR2 800Mhz Ram, * Four 240-pin DDR2 DIMM sockets * Supports PC2 4200 (533 MHz), PC 5300 (667 MHz) and PC2 6400 (800 MHz) DDR2 DIMMs * Maximum HP/Compaq approved memory is 8 GB*
so in essence yes you can run 2 gig models in each DIM. As for the fallacy of a 32 bit OS not utilizing more than 3 gigs of ram, the OS now in Vista will see it and use it now in SP1. XP will see up to 4 now, but your other apps will utilize the extra bandwidth when running. Were are talking about this Mobo correct ? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf-JAVA/Doc/images/c00748730.jpg

Anthony - ok
So in your opinion, would it be worth it to run 4 x 2GB chips or just go with 4 x 1 GB - I'm not looking to build a monster out of this - nor am I going to be using VIsta

First off Drew, If thats the board and your just trying for a cheap upgrade then memory is ok, especially if you going to use it to host your accessory's files IE: SB FSInn AS and the such for a wide fs comp for flight sim, , It should run FS9 with no problems, FSX is another story
You can get 2 gig sticks of PC2-6400 for around 60 a pop. you will get better performance running Two 2 gig chips verses four 1 gig chips. so yes that would be the the way to go.

To Add what Michael was saying, I don't know where you got that info from Drew, but that particular board is set up for it, if thats what HP told you, then one of two things are going on here, That is revision board 1a , if it is ver 1.5 then it will hold 4 x 2 for a total of 8192 if its not then Michael is correct only 4 x 1 for 4096
