I would like to import a fs 2004 video file (fvr format) into the windows movie maker program but always get an error message saying it cannot be imported becuause the proper codex is not on my computer. So far, I not been able to find a codex that supports the frv format. Any suggestions welcomed.

My suggestion is to buy or a screen capturing program such as FRAPS, or download a free screen capturing program that automatically converts files into a .wav file type, which will work with windows movie maker.

FS's video isn't really a "video". To my understanding, it's only saved data, which can be "replayed" in the sim. In other words, you're watching an instant replay of a flight, not a movie.
Like Ian said, FRAPS saves an actual video file in AVI format, which can be imported into WMM. Beware that FRAPS consumes a lot of resources and can affect your performance greatly.

William if you saved a flight - using FRAPS or TOPGUN, or GAMECAM or one of about 50 different capture programs - you play it back and record it that way.
There is nothing that I know of that will convert the FS media format into another (allowing you to play it outside its native environment).
FRAPS is free - bust you have a watermark until you purchase -0 but a 45 second video in FRAPS eats up almost 300MB - so like David said - watch out.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I see now that importing may not work and I would have to first record the video with a capture progam into a standard format. The problem, however, appears to the the amount of memory needed for even a 5-10 minute FRAPS video clip. I'm wondering if the FRAPS AVI format will shrink any appreciable amount when imported into a WMM format?

Yep, the raw AVI file (if it's 5 minutes long) can take up to gigabytes (yeah, GB, make sure your HD can handle it).
There's an option in FRAPS that says "record in half size" or something like that. It greatly helps performance and space.
When you import it into WMM, you can work on it, edit it, etc. Once you "Export" it to Windows Media Video (that's like saving the file), it'll convert the AVI file to a much smaller file (it'll take a lot of time, so be patient).
Basically, it's like a picture. The raw file is a BMP of 2.25MB, but once you save it as JPG, it can be reduced to 100KB.

I use GameCam (which I personally have found superior than fraps), and keep all the clips or "takes" in AVI format. I'll edit in Sony Vegas and do everything in AVI. Once I'm happy with the edited video, then I'll convert it to wmv. As David said, it'll take a while (sometimes hours). Normally I'll do 4 or 5 exports to wmv, trying to find the best balance between size and quality of the final product.
When making FS Videos, 2 incredibly useful apps:
- DBS Walk & Follow (payware): far superior than Active Camera, for getting some really slick camera angles.
- FSRecorder (free): This is quite a gem... Basically, fly your flight with FSRecorder running. Then, you can play that flight back as AI in the sim. This is pretty cool in that you can now hop in a chase plane (or helo for ground work) and get tons of external shots/angles.

Dave and Dan,
Thanks for the new comments and ideas. My first FRAPS recording (full size) of a 8 minute flight took up 555 gb which is about what I estimated considering their 31 sec demo used 27mb. I'll experiment with the half size Fraps recording and also look at Dan's recommended software.
I appreciate your comments.

The other thing you may consider is where you are going to post your final product...size does matter in that instance unless you have your own server
