Part of the reason for my time off has been to devote a little more time to our ACARS server. I have it more or less to the point where I can send it to Ross to stress test and use as the basis for a client piece that he will be writing. Based on what we have discussed, we should be able to display position reports, flight information, handle private and group chat. Web server tasks will be able to poll the server to get lists of active pilots, etc. etc.
Going forward, I'd like to see the server and client pull data from the schedule database, airport data and other good stuff, and allow automatic PIREP filing without visiting the web site. The server is written in an extremely light and simple fashion, so while there's a lot it hasn't been to support, there's nothing that it cannot explicitly NOT do for architectural reasons.
A proper ACARS system is the logical next step for DVA. I'm confident that with Ross' talents, we can make some great progress.
Cheers!
Luke

Sounds wonderful, I hope, however, it comes with an instruction manual (or is simple to use) and it does not become mandatory to use. I used to fly for British Airways Virtual but was forced to resign when they forced pilots to use their ACARS system and removed "standard" website-based PiReps since I could not get the system to work on my computer.

Right now I would be very, very reluctant to mandate such as system.
My goal with ACARS is less of a "nanny" and more of a value-add service to our pilots. Our promotion system is different from BAV and the audit side of things is less important to us.
Cheers!
