Hello all... I've not been in the virtual skies for over a month now because I believe my cpu has a virus.
here's the story... I was on myspace and I made a mistake and clicked a link to one of those sites that advertise online dating and stuff like that. It went to the page and my computer just froze. Nothing would move, not the mouse or anything. I ctrl+alt+delete but nothing. so I turned my computer off using my power button on the desktop. I tried to turn it back on and it wouldn't come on. After a few hours, it would come back on but I'm not able to open anything really. I tried system restore but it would just tell me that the feature that I am trying to use is on a network that is unavailable. (?) I would get that message with just about any and everything that I try to open. When I try to open FSX, the load page comes up or whatever, everything is normal. Sometimes it even opens to the free flight menu for about 5 seconds before I get a message saying that something is wrong with the file and it closes. I tried to uninstall FSX... but I get that message and I tried using the CDs to bring up the page where I can uninstall but It would just freeze while its loading up.
If anybody recognizes this and knows what to do, I would love to know what I need to do to fix this problem, because I've just about withered away because I haven't been able to fire up my MD-11
thanks for your time,

FORMAT - C
But seriously - what (if any) antivirus software are you running?
Have you tried booting up with a boot CD?
Have you tried booting up in SAFE MODE to try and troubleshoot it that way?
press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

You may need to do a windows repair or completely re-install windows. Sounds like you may have lost some drivers.

I have Norton Antivirus Software.
When I'm in safe mode, what do I do then?
And how do I do a windows repair/re-install windows?

To do a windows repair, you need the original Windows XP disk, just put it in the drive and it should come up with a menu that will guide you thru the process (assuming you are using XP).

Armant - I am going to say with about 95% assurance, that Norton is your problem - not your friend. I have not used norton for years now - after it "helped" me out. There is a special download tool on the Norton site that tells you specifically how to remove it. There are much better products out there that do as good or better than Norton - and don't stick their tentacles into every aspect.
Try that first.
I use AVG as well as RegCure and XSoftSpy. That's it - and I haven't had a problem since I began using it.

Bryan- my computer came with XP. I never got a disk I think.
Andy- I did a System Restore and I didn't set up Norton, but I still have the same problem. I also ran some tests on my hard drives with Pc doctor 5, and they checked out. So now I'm even more confused. Do you think that my CPU has just gone bad or something?

Look here for good freeware replacements:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic3616.html
Then you should know that the system restore will not get rid of norton. To get rid of it do this:
1. Download and save SymNRT.exe to your desktop.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
2. Close all programs and double click on the tool.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
4. Restart the computer if asked.
5. Then delete the SymNRT.exe tool from your desktop.
6. Open the Program Files folder on your local disk ( normally C: )
7. Find and delete the following folders (if present):
* Norton AntiVirus
* Norton Internet Security
* Norton SystemWorks
* Norton Personal Firewall
excl.gif The removal program can get rid of the following Norton Programs:
* Norton AntiVirus 2004/2005/2006
* Norton AntiVirus Professional 2004
* Norton AntiVirus 3, 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005/2006
* Norton GoBack 3.1/3.5/3.6/4.0/4.1
* Norton SystemWorks 2004 Professional Edition
* Norton SystemWorks 2005/2006 Premier
* Norton SystemWorks 2004/2005/2006
* Norton SystemWorks 2006 Basic Edition
* Norton Password Manager 2004
* Norton Internet Security 2004/2005/2006
* Norton Internet Security 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005/2006
* Norton Internet Security 2005 AntiSpyware Edition 8.2
* Norton Personal Firewall 2004/2005/2006
* Norton AntiSpam 2004/2005
* Norton Ghost 2003/9.0/10.0

This is what I did...
I ran a PC Recovery and when I set up XP, I didn't set up Norton. Then, I deleted it under Add/Remove Programs... I re-installed FSX and I've just complete on whole test flight, no problems... So I'm all clear to return to the skies.
Now I just have to run to Best Buy or something and grab some protection!
Thanks for the help, I think Norton was the problem.
