Hi folks
I'v a big problem getting FSX running well. I'll try to explane as good as i can. First my sys specs...
Windows XP Pro 5.1. Service Pack 3 build 2600
Motherboard: Gigabyte P35 DQ6
Bios: Award Software Int F4
Smbios 2.4
Processor: CORE2DUO E6850 3.0 Ghz
Graphicscard: Nvidia Gforce GTX 8800
Mem: 4 Ghz
All drivers needed, newest versions.
Should be enough to run FSX well, wich it actually does. About 30 fps with medium-high settings. No pc crash, no freezing, nothing, just running fine.
But....most addons require the install of FSX SP1 and sometimes also SP2. For example, PMDG 747-400X requires FSX SP1
So i installed FSX SP1. First i remarked, a BIG improvemt in fps. Then, BIG BIG troubles all over the place. After a few seconds after starting my flight, equal wich one, my computer does not do anyting anymore, everything stops, seems to be "frozen". Sound, graphics, can't move mouse anymore, keyboard doenst work anymore. I cant do anything to get out of that nasty situation.
Just pushing the emergencybutton, wich shuts off and restart the computer, its the only thing i can do.
I was thinking how could that be. I looked over many forums to find a solution. Forums from producers of the pc-components etc, as well all possible forums about flightsimming. But nothing usefull. I'm having this fight now for a few months, its makes me tired. The computer seems to work fine. Im very carefull with what i install. Its a 100% clean pc for sure.
I had also a problem with acars, crashing and freezing my cpu. see http://www.deltava.org/thread.do?id=0x11631 There i just deleted version 1.1 of FRAMEnetwork, and the problem was solved. For the time beeing, i use FS9.
But now im thinking, how can i solve freezes and crashed with FSX SP1. I JUST WANT TO FLY FSX
Any help, advice, ideas, appreciated.
Cheers

First - do you have or did you install FSX Acceleration?
You should install teh >net 2.0 or up to 3.5. I have no issues with is at all.
Do you have some kind of AV/REG Cleaner - something in the background (Norton) that could be inadvertently killing the FSX Process?

Hi Andrew
No FSX Acceleration. Just FSX and after that FSX SP1. Then....its there. Further no cleaner or something similar. Just Antivir wich should not have any influence, and the standard windows firewall.

Update: No i'v installed it again, FSX + FSX SP1. Difference with last time is, no FRAMEnetwarok 1.1 but 2.0 3.0 and 3.5. And as you said Andrew, switchedoff AV and the Windows Firewall. With nothing extra installed, i flew the deltawings for about 10 min, without any crash.
But i am very carefull, no joys to early. Will test some things around. I'll keep you informed.
Cheers
PS: Is Sp2 needed? I heard, its only for some multiplayer features.

I can't even get FSX to get past the splash screen when I install SP1. I've tried 3 times. The splash screen goes away like it's loading, and that's it. Nothing. So, you got farther than I!

allright, will try it out! Someone know what this means?
[JOBSCHEDULER]
AffinityMask=n
where
n num of cores scheduled processor bit mask
1 = 1 core 0001
3 = 2 cores 0011
7 = 3 cores 0111
15 = 4 cores 1111
I saw this on the fsinsider site. What must exactly added to the cfgfile. Please advice.

My advice is that unless you know exactly what is going to happen when you start changing values in your config - leave it alone.
The core process above is kind of a misnomer. FSX (and especially if you are using Vista or even XP) looks to look for dual core or more on your system. So by directly entering a change in the AffinityMask to reflect your actual cores - should do nothing really.

I sometimes wonder if people have trouble with the service packs because they
have a bunch of addon changes to FSX before.
What I do is install FSX and then before touching a THING, install SP1 AND SP2,
then go and do fleet and payware installs.
However, I run Vista X64, so thats a difference. People stick 4G of memory in their
machines and then run XP which is TOTALLY unable to use more than 2G, so half
the memory you have is sitting sucking power doing nothing for you
Thats why Vista is a help for FSX, whatever other warts it might have. The one other
way to use that memory is to go XP X64, but that has support issues.
Its just possible that you have a swap problem that is causing that freezing, if so you
would instantly have double the memory if you ran Vista... think about it.
Good luck,

OK, I have to qualify what I said, with XP the application, ie FSX, only has access to a 2G
"virtual address space", I actually went and looked up the details after your post Andy
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEmem.mspx
So its not as bad as I was making out. However on Vista that virtual space is increased so
its still better for the app.

Makes me glad I'm not a PC support person!!
I'm about at the end of my ideas Robert, make SURE that you
update any drivers for your motherboard/chipset and of course
the latest drivers for whatever your video is.
Hmmm, if you have any other resident software get rid of it, things
like virus protection.
OH, another idea, once you have FSX installed, how are you configuring?
If you change settings will its behavior changes?
Good luck, seems like a tough problem.

Vista, XP, 64bit, 32bit, latest drivers, with or without virus protection....settings etc etc...it all makes no diference. I'm fighting against this for months now. I'v got the feelings, its something with hardware... or... the FSX dvd is not ok...dont know...sometimes its frustrating....i go back to FS9 i guess:)

I had a similar issue prior to a computer upgrade (froze after about 10 mins. of use) and found that as long as I deleted the saved files folder (contents) it no longer froze up. Don't know if this will help you or not. Just a fix for a past experiance. BTW I only installed Acceleration and no service packs.

FSX has this really braindead approach (IMHO) to keeping state around, its given me
problems many times. You don't want to just do the contents because if memory
serves there are some hidden files in the directory. Rename the existing directory
to something else, and then make a new one.
Hope that fixes it for you!!

Just the contents. I used to keep reinstalling FSX, till once I decided to delete the contents of the saved files (i didn't notice any other files in there) and the problem went away. Now with the new system I don't seem to have that issue at all. Renaming the file should serve the same purpose as Jack suggested.
Good Luck.

Rob,
I don't have xp, but do you have all OS updates installed before trying to install fsx? I had a problem with that on Vista. Kept crashing on me. Ran the updates, reinstalled, no problems since then.
Don't know if this will make a difference, but check to see that your fsx.cfg file gets deleted when you uninstall fsx, or delete it yourself.
When you re-install install FSX, run it (quick flight), install SP1 (quick flight), install SP2 (quick flight).

There once was a man from Nantucket, who was thinking about FSX and said "Aww f...what the?? Now that's bizare..."
So, FSX + SP1 works now. I was starting my un-install process--I had just removed FSInn, FSCopilot, and ACARS--and was just about to un-install FSX when I thought "sure, why not. I'll try it one more time, what do I have to lose?" Sure enough, it worked. I did a quick flight, took off from SLC 16L in the fleet 757, did a 180, landed at KBTF, ended the flight, not a single problem. The frames are WAY better, the lights work now, no hang ups, no stalls, no crashes.....so wierd. I haven't tried re-installing those 3 yet, so we'll see what happens next. Woot!
