Last flight took me to Puerto Vallarta Mexico on board of a 752. At the time of building the flight assigment, I didn't check for the returning flight in the hope of doing so on the next day. The next day, there was no returning flight for the 752, though. There were, of course, returning flights operating for the company but assigned to other types of planes.
Can I just do the returning flight to ATL using the 752 instead of the predefined plane and make it account for the Logbook and all that it involves? Am I restricted to wait for another day when the 752 is scheduled to be used?
I guess Delta operates the 752 to Puerto Vallarta only in selected days due to payload factor. Actually, the ATL-PVR flight turned out to be scheduled on saturday.

Newbie question. Flying assignments don't have to depart at the arrival location of the previous flight. You want to do this just because it makes more sense from a narrative POV?

Yes. What's the point of having a cockpit crew left stranded at a foreign destination. I do accept it was my mystake not to fly the returning leg immediatly but having burned three hours and a half of my free time flying, I was kinda tired. But that's ok, thanks for the info.

I'm the same way I don't do random flight. I don't like doing return flights unless necessary. I like hopping point to point, seeing different places and sometimes I'll cheat and use another airport w/in driving distance (e.g. EWR-JFK-LGA, DAB-MCO)

Sometimes what I do when I don't feel like following a flow (telling from my log book, I usually to an out and return) I cheat and say in the last flight comments that I jumpseated somehwere or something to that effect.

You need to jump seat Captain because that is what mimics the real world. You get to relax and even doze off just behind the crew and sometimes the seats have the sheepskin like the front line seats have.
