You'll need about $2000 for a custom built machine. You are going to be very hard pressed to find a production machine that will run a constant 15+fps on FSX with the sliders all the way up. The Dell XPS lineup can't do it. (I know because I have one), and my HP laptop (which is faster than my XPS) has fun holding 20 fps on FS9 with the sliders all the way up.
Jetline Systems custom build computers that are dedicated flightsimming computers, and are the only company that comes to mind that can build a machine tha will do what you want it to do. They are expensive though with their base line rig starting at $1995.00.
Check them out. http://www.jetlinesystems.com/fsc
Good luck and let me know what happens

lol = Bo, send an email to our own Anthony Piasecki. He builds customs, based on what you want - and your needs. He's built mine, and several other DVA member computers that make FSX and other high end programs scream...and for a lot less than 1900$

If you can get one cheaper then by all means, that would be the way to go.

Matt - I'm not laughing at you - that was a general computer question laugh. There's a bunch of threads in here about building and buying - I just got another little chuckle out of it!

Bo, I wouldn't be so sure. With a computer under $1000 you are lucky enough if you can fly on low to medium settings with default planes. I'm not trying to discourage you but this is it. A good computer for FSX is $2000. And if you don't beleive me, search for reviews. I recommend sending Anthony Piasecki an e-mail, he offers great help with computers.

Bo, Unfortunately, you probably found your sweet spot on that machine, if the sim is running smoothly on thise settings and you have tried to go higher and had issues, then it is safe to say that is the max you will get out of it. Shoot Drew an email for his system specs and ask him how he feels about the cost relation to his components.

Prices have dropped enough in the last couple months where you can get a descent dual to quad core system with 2-4GB ram and a good video card for under $700. The issue then would be what operating system? There are some roll back deals (roll back to XP) available from Dell, but most of those are lower end systems. If you are serious about building one on your own, check the prices of your components against what is being offered for sale from Dell, HP or others. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy one already assembled, rather then build your own.
Even a system like this XPS630 ($1199), should be able to handle FSX with the dual video cards and good amount of memory:
Intel Core2 E8400 (6MB,3.0 GHz, 1333FSB)
Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64-Bit
16X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability
4GB1 Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz - 4 DIMMs
500GB2 - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache
Dual nVidia GeForce 9800 GT 512MB3

Bo, from what you have read in the past I'm guessing that you're looking for something that you get dirt cheap and will give you pretty decent performance. So *if* I was to build a very very cheap FSX system right now, this is what I'd get (price just a guess):
E5200 - overclocked to 3.6+ ($85)
Aftermarket cooler ($20)
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound ($5)
Motherboard (P43/45) ($60)
9600GSO ($50)
2GB RAM 800 ($15)
Hard Drive 160GB ($40)
450+ Watt PSU ($20)
Shipping ($20)
=============
Total: $315
You should be able to run everything on global high probably somewhere around 20 fps fsxmark07 results.

Well so far.. my setups been running FSX with 20-40 FPS in KATL full settings. but uhm. Here are my specs.
Intel Pentium Q6600 OC to 3.0GHz
Zalman CPU cooler (keeps the CPE at around a comfy 25 degrees Celsius.)
eVGA 790i Motherboard
eVGA 8800GTX x2 (SLi) but 1 should suffice (Or the new 9x series)
6gigs of DDR2 PC2-8500 1066MHz from OCZ (but 4 should suffice if its vista)
320g HDD SATA config. (dont go IDE....)
OCZ 800watt PSU
Zalman GPU Cooler (30-40 degrees C)
ANTEC 900 Tower. With monster Fans but super quiet... which is amazing.
Sure this seems a tad bit excessive but you can still shave off about 400 dollars here and still get around 15 fps in busy areas.
Make sure you tweak FSX not only in the Video sliders but also using nHancer.
and make sure you have sufficient cooling and always keep your computer dust free, as dust is notorious for computer overheats.
For Overclocking, make sure you read enough up on it before you go ahead because any mistake can make your computer very unstable.
If you dont know much about overclocking i suggest just leaving your frequencies to stock.
