I recently built a new computer with Windows Vista. I had been flying with FSX on my Windows XP PC and using RealityXP's GNS 430 WAAS GPS, which I thoroughly enjoyed since it offers both horizontal and vertical guidance among other features. When I installed the RealityXP software on my Vista PC I had a heck of a time getting it to work. Fearing incompatibility with Vista I had set it aside for a while and had communications with the publisher through their forum with little and no results. Then just these past few days the publisher suggested reading a resource that had been posted concerning Vista and some of the issues surrounding the running of software, which ran perfectly in Windows XP, but had trouble running on a Vista PC. If any of you are running add-on's to FSX or other versions of Flight Simulator on a Vista it helps to read about and understand the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) system in Vista. It was primarily design to prevent malicious software from being installed and executed on your PC, which occurs more than you think when accessing the Internet. If you try to run certain software and you get messages that DEP had to close your program, or that your software “stop working” when attempting to close Flight Simulator, it’s probably DEP sticking its nose where it doesn’t belong. The remedy is adding the names of the executables that need to run along with Flight Simulator to DEP. This is done by going through the Control Panel, going to Systems, and accessing Advanced System Setting. In the dialog window that pops up and under Performance, press the Setting button. There you will find a tab labeled “Data Execution Prevention.” Make sure that the “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:” option is selected and then below use the Add button to enter the names of the executables that are being prevented from running. It’s possible to disable DEP but I wouldn’t recommend it under any circumstance. I hope this help some of you Vista users.
