Was doing an easy flight, CVG-ORD last night, and had FS crash on me, which is a rarity. Simply locked up on something simple (trying to bring up the FPL page on the GPS) and stopped, while running all the things I normally run and have run for ages. Decided to defrag and clean up my C disk to see if that was the problem, and opened SpeedFan on a hunch. While working through Disk Cleanup, SpeedFan reported my CPU running in the mid to high 60's (peaked at 68C), and while defragging, it was averaging in the 50C range. I think part of the problem is one of my fans (on the back of the case) is blowing air in, and I'll change it around tonight. But I know that hitting 67C isn't good for the CPU, and FS can put that kind of a strain on a CPU often.I have already put a new fan on the CPU about a year ago, and it looks like it works fine. Do I need a new/bigger fan, a new layer of thermal paste?

Brian--make sure that one of your CPU cooler pins didn't pop out from the motherboard. That happened to me 6 months ago and all of a sudden my nice 42-44C turned into 75 in a matter of seconds. Changing that fan around will help, but I doubt that will drop temps 20C. Also, check for clogged intakes/fan filters (again, don't think that would cause such a significant temp rise).

Jack, the plot thickens! I kept getting CTD problems, so I opened Speedfan when I started FS and kept Speedfan in the foreground while FS loaded, and got a very noticeable spike in temps as the CPU went under load. Consistently went up to the 58-62C range while FS was running and kept getting a CTD. The CPU was averaging 48-50C when at idle in between. I did check to make sure all my fans were clean and secure, and they were. I pulled the side panel and put a fan in there, and the temp went lower (avg. 54-56C under 100% load)and idle speed has come down to abut 46C. Still unsure of why the CPU temp is higher than usual, but I'm beginning to think that the CPU or fan may be on their last legs. Oh well, I guess if I have to go back to the laptop I will.

Brian,
I'm going out of town tomorrow so I won't be able to respond much, but something's going on there as a normal idle should be in the 20s to low 30s. Here's some random thoughts I've got:
-Ensure that your CPU is not being used at idle.
-Do you have your heatsink mounted correctly, and it's clean?
-With most non cheap motherboards you can set the speed of the fans so they are quiet until you get into the upper temps. Check those settings.
-What CPU do you have? With Intel those temps are just fine until you get to 70, so I wouldn't worry about the high temps.
-That fan on the back, you want it to be pushing air out of the case and not pulling it in fyi.
-Are you overclocking at all?
-Do you have your CPU voltage set to auto? Download a program called CPUz, what's your core voltage?
-stress that CPU of yours with Prime95 at maximum heat. Let it run for like 15 minutes (stop it if it gets near 70). What temp did you get?
-try re-seating your heatsink using thermal paste (such as Arctic Silver 5). Instead of doing a little rice drop, spread a very thin layer over your CPU with a razor to insure it's covering the entire thing (the rice drop may or may not cover it). Tighten or clamp your heatsink down in a X pattern a little at a time.
-If you're still worried about the temps try to lower your CPU voltage (not the FSB) so you're not underclocking just lowering the voltage.
Anyways those are some things I was thinking of.

Well, took the computer and tore it down to nothing, took everything out including the mobo and cleaned it up good and put it back together and made sure that the heat sink was tightened down good with a little more thermal paste underneath it. Fired it up, and got the same thing as I had gotten before. FS made the temp spike up to 68-70C, crashed to desktop. Tax season is right around the bend, so I'm just gonna wait and get some new parts and rebuild it. I used my wife's laptop last night for FNO and it worked great (even got to use my monitor as a spare, and it was nice!).
