I'm sorry if someone posted this earlier. I've been gone for a few days and am not updated. Through Dec. 13, 2009 the FAA requires certain phraseology for Northwest and DAL aircraft painted different colors. Read the two page PDF:

Will we have to use that call sign on VATSIM?

Nope, you can use whatever call sign you want on VATSIM. I could even use Lufthansa's call sign for DAL flights if I wanted.

No, that callsign was an example. But the phraseology is in place. I got this off of their ARTCC's NOTAM page today.

VATSIM is a nice compromise between playing around and real flying.

I would think if the aircraft your piloting is in Delta colors you would use Delta in the call sign .... guess not, that would make too much sense!
Now if your in Northwest colors and flying under delta call sign, ok, I get it.

Biggest for this is the same as US Air and American West when they merged and were repainting the fleets...
This is mostly for the tower controllers since the merger hasn't been finished yet (be another year or so before that happens). So in the mean time, NWA is continuing on doing business as normal but their fleet is getting repainted in Delta colors. So adding the "delta colors" part into the phraseology helps the controllers when they are trying to find the plane or point them out to other planes. They will tell people to follow the delta a320 ahead instead of saying the northwest one...would make it a bit more of a challenge when you are looking for a NWA A320 when its painted in DAL colors

But Benton... the memo states
"Additionally, until the merging of the airlines operating certification process is completed, Northwest Airlines will continue to use the “Northwest” aircraft call sign and the “NWA” three-letter
identifier in its flight plan. This will be the case regardless of the paint scheme of the aircraft."
This sound to me like there will be considerable confusion when an aircraft is painted with Delta colors but uses a NWA call sign because it is a NWA flight.

That's exactly it Alan, the whole reason for adding in the "delta colors" part is to avoid confusion so aircraft know what aircraft they need to look for when told by ATC. It won't throw them off that its a NWA callsign or anything, a controller doesn't mention that. They would just say something like "TRS444, follow the Delta A320 passing from your right to left". In reality, that A320 is a NWA flight with NWA pilots and crew onboard. But the controller doesn't mention anything about it being a NWA flight to the pilot since they don't care. They just want to know which A320 they are supposed to find and follow, and they do so by just looking at the paint scheme on the plane...
The controllers also need to know what colors they are in since most Local controllers (Tower and below) have to rely on actually seeing the plane to figure out who everyone is. If a NWA flight calls up and doesn't mention they are in "Delta colors" then the controller will never find that plane since he is looking for a NWA colored flight. Now in reality that doesn't happen since "Delta colors" is included on the flight strip of everyone of those flights too.
Make sense?
