PLEASE ignore that its 375 watts, it can still run more!
I have a 8800GTS in my hand and I want to know if these 12V rails are Combined 12Va 18A + 12Vb 18A = 36Amps?
I started a topic a week ago but they all go off topic and nobody seems to find my question.
Also I have a 500watt comming in tomorrow, im just anxious to try the Card.

"PLEASE ignore that its 375 watts, it can still run more! " ... sorry, not going to ignore.
Says right there on your PS MAX continuous total DC output power shall not exceed 375W .... if you push your luck the damage done may be very expensive.
You simply need a larger PS. It is right there in black and white ... I looked up the specs on your 8800GTS, and this PS won't cut it....8800GTS Specs says "A minimum 400W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 26A) "....this power supply doesn't supply enough.
Good luck!

By the way, to answer the original question .... each 12v rail is separate and is designed to only produce up to 18 amps each. That doesn't mean 36 amps total.

yup not enough juice. Brown is right on. Dell power supplies are proprietary too from what I hear.. Dell power supply needed for dell motherboard.. and no aftermarket parts.
may not be the case anymore.. but I remember about 5 years ago with a Dell GX270 that had that issue. Had to get the PS from them..
Something to check out. You dont want any surprises.

Ryan, a PSU cannot share amps across rails. You put a 8800GTS in that machine even with that PSU you ordered and you can count on loosing the whole thing. And as Michael said, the PSU doesn't supply the right amount of amps on EACH rail. Each rail powers different 12V systems, they cannot share the amps between them.

I have a 9800GTX and a 500W supply, every so often I have system resets or system lockups.
Mind you, this is a QUALITY supply, Antec EarthWatts. Still, its been driving me nuts with these
weird problems.
This weekend I came up with a test, I had an extra power supply, so I hooked it up so that
it would power the external connections to the video card rather than the builtin supply, and
sure enough, no crashes in a couple days now.
The moral of the story is that even 500W might not be enough but it depends on a lot of
little things, different motherboards will draw more or less power, how many disks or other
peripheral devices you have will matter...
Lots of kids run computers way out of spec, overclocking and such, and "it works great"...
until it dies an early horrible death of course

9800 Demands power, I don't know what your doing with a 500W in the 1st place.
Also to add to the people who say that the rails provide power to the other components, indeed I believe they don't, they that's what the 3v rails and 5v rails are for CPU HD etc...

Ryan ... why did you even bother posting your question and asking for help, seems to me you know it all already. Every time you got an answer you didn't believe or like you shot it down. I'll tell you what, I will simply tell you what you want to hear, "Your Dell PS will work perfectly."
Good luck! ...and with that said, I'm done with this topic.

Ryan, they ARE independent! Especailly on the Dell OEM power supply, there is no way to cross feed the rails to share amperage as they are completely different circuits! Read this from http://www.playtool.com/pages/psumultirail/multirails.html :
"But if you have a dual 12 rail PSU which has 20 amp limits on each 12 volt rail, then you also have to make sure that you don't exceed 20 amps on each rail. If you exceed 20 amps on a rail then the PSU will shut down even if the PSU supports more than 33 amps total. You can see the complications of dealing with the "rail balancing" problem on this page. If you're building a non high-powered computer then it's unlikely that you will draw close to a total of 20 amps at 12 volts. In that case you don't really have to worry about the limits on individual rails. It's only high-powered computers which draw lots of 12 volt current that get into trouble. "
So if you have a high powered card that is drawing lots of power on a PSU that can't supply the power it needs alone, something isn't getting the power it needs, and even if it is, the power is "dirty." Dirty power with lots of noise and interference can kill your CPU or your drives in a heartbeat. From the looks of the cards I've looked at you have to have TWO different power connections to supply power to the card. Without the right amps, wattage means nothing.

Ryan, you need to LISTEN to their advice, you can look for advice all you want but its in vain unless you take it.
Your risking alot of money here.

Which I am, I dont take advise from one person, I take advise from a couple people at least, Ive talked to 3 computer wiz's that all say that the dual 12v rails are fine, Other people say they run 2 4850's on the PSU im buying plus a quad core.
I just wanted to get your guys advise, but as always, some guys don't agree with others. I don't take this big of risks, I get ideas first.
