I play FSX in Windowed mode because I like to switch back and forth and do other things while cruising. I am presently using Vista 32 by the way.
My question is, does minimizing and maximizing the FSX window have any effect on memory usage? Does it corrupt anything?
Reason I ask is that I sometimes get an error message saying I have run out of memory. Now, I have 4GB installed (Ya, I know 32 bit OS won't see all of that), a 8GB flash drive for ReadyBoost, and my page file is already set to something like 4GB.
Come this Wed. I'll be installing Vista Ultimate 64 and adding another 4GB of RAM (for a total of 8). I imagine I shouldn't ever see low memory issues ever again. I know there are those that really do not like Vista, but quite honestly I really never have had a problem with it. It runs all my apps beautifully.
Anyways, any advice or suggestions would be great.

Minimizing and maximizing the FSX window doesn't corrupt anything. However, it is important to know that the larger the FSX window, the slower performance you have. It is best to experiment.
The out of memory errors appear when you have a 32-bit based OS and when you use a complex add-on (PMDG; LDS). It doesn't matter how much memory you have - the only known cure is to use a 64-bit OS. Installing Vista Ultimate 64 is a smart move - you can't go wrong with that !

I'm not sure I agree. I have been using Vista32 for a year or so. I have 4GB of memory and fly all of the complex a/c like the PMDG747 and MD11, LDS, etc. I have never had an out of memory message. I alway fly in window mode and do other stuff like surf the net, etc. With FSX, the Acars, RC4 and my other programs, it flys nicely.
One thing I might mention. You get no benefit of readyboost and let Vista set your Pagefile.

Great, thanks all!
Vista 64 and another 4GB is already bought and paid for and should be here tomorrow. I suppose it can't hurt.

You've to change the settings, some numbers on your virtual memory options.

Of course, that means redoing everything. Vista32 to Vista64 is not an upgrade but a new install.

Well .... even with Vista 64 and 8GB of RAM I get the same error .... I'll look into my page file settings but it shouldn't need to be pulling from the page file very often
EDIT: Changed the page file setting manually ... initial value of 12000 and max value 16000. Vista recommended something like 12283 or something. We'll see if this corrects the problem.

Sad to hear that you still get the OOM error. It happens very rarely on Vista 64, however when it occurs it can be a big headache. Try searching on the avsim forums about this error, I remember there was a 15+ page thread over there. Let us know ...
