I've encountered a problem the past few weeks that I've never had before. I'm in the middle of a flight and suddenly FS9 simply shuts down. No BSOD, black screen, nothing. It just instantly "drops out" and I'm back at the desktop. I think it sometimes happens when I'm adding waypoints or doing something else with the FMC (CaptainSim 757) - but I'm not sure that's the only time it happens since it may have happened early on with the LDS767 while simply flying an approach. I know that I have my nVidia 7600GT bandwidth_multiplier set at 240, but have no idea if that's the problem. Specs are a P4 3.2ghz, 2040 RAM, and a 256 7600GT video card. I clear out memory and usually show over 1100 free even while in add-on scenery (KATL, KLAX, etc.). Any ideas? Thanks - cause it's a pain to be hours in to a flight and have it simply disappear!!!

Make sure you download the lates version of FSX:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837195
It will update your current version, no uninstall required. The newer versions have fixed various CTD bugs.

Since he's flying FS9 the latest version of FSX won't do him much good
Chuck, that sudden crash to the desktop means the application, ie FS9, had
a fatal error of some sort, Microsoft doesnt think its customers need to have
the details, so its just one big POOF leaving nary a clue as to why
Its not a crash of the whole OS, hence no BSOD. You can do some reverse
detective work, like try to remember what you've changed recently or since
you began seeing this, and undo or stop doing it.
Since its just the app crashing, its probably not hardware, most likely you did
something to the sim and its hitting a problem because of it. Something like
a bad pointer due to a missing library for instance.
Good luck in finding it!

Opps, my bad, I just followed your link Mark and I see you mean the
latest FS9, so that might be a good idea. Still since its something he
was not seeing before I think its more likely a config or some other
change to his sim environment.
Couldnt hurt to upgrade if you havent though, I always apply the
service packs.

Lots of good information. I read the MS Support link, and it seems everything is in order. I wonder if setting my video card to 8x Anti-Aliasing rather than 4x might be the problem (just kinda have a feeling that's what it could be) even though 8x looks a lot better while on the ground? I'm also using a FSG landclass and wonder if that could the problem - again I've used it for a long time. I keep racking my brain trying to figure out what might be going on!!!! Jack, how in the world would I ever find a library problem - wonder if I should remove some of my free "Avsim" add-on airports even though I'm flying to them?

Chuck, I don't have a simple 1-liner for figuring out a problem like these.
Odds are its not a missing DLL because that will generally cause a poof
when loading, not halfway thru a flight. BTW, FS Panel Studio is great
for finding that sort of issue, but its not a tool most will need.
Just gonna have to do a lot of trial and error, the alias setting seems
a good place to start. I doubt removing planes will help, they might
be a cause, but if so it would be because they replaced a default gauge
with one of their own and removing them now won't fix that
Good luck,

Chuck, I have had four recent flights in the CS757 come to a suddent end in mid-air. On each occassion, I was changing some parameter or other (i.e. flight route, fix, etc) in the FMC. When I attempted to execute the change, ...BOOM...crash to desktop. I believe there is still some bug in the CS program as it relates to the FMC and when the pilot trys to make a change it doesnt like, it runs home to mama.

Vic, Jack and Mark, Wow, now that I think about it, most (if not all) of my crashes back to the desktop have been while using the CS757. I do know that the last crash happened while working with the FMC updating crossing altitudes on a STAR in to LAX. In any event, I've totally removed and reinstalled FS9 and only the CS757. I've not added any airports, FSGenesis, or Ultimate Terrain. My ACARS, Squawkbox and AS6.5 are WideFS'd from my notebook computer so the FS9 setup is pretty basic at this point. We'll try a few flights to see what happens and then go from there. I'll keep you informed.

Two times in a row my CS757 CTD'd while updating the FMC. Not good! I've done some research and it seems the culprit may well be the CS757 FMC. Take a look at this: http://www.captainsim.org/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1226092101
