Yeah, I have it. I've actually had it for a long while .... my father is in the industry and gets this stuff way ahead of time.
I put it on my laptop just for kicks. No driver support for this though, at least for my version, not sure about the new beta.
It looks pretty much the same as Vista. Supposed to start up and shutdown a lot quicker. I haven't really used it extensively so i couldn't tell you all about it.

I am an Intel software engineer, so of course I have MSDN, but so far I would just
wait and see, early releases always have driver issues. Coworkers on my floor run
it, and it looks pretty close to Vista, not sure if all the permissions hassles with
Vista are addressed or not. I will probably run it early, just not this early

Any early release of ANYTHING from MS needs to be handled with caution, especially an OS release... after what happened with VISTA. But seriously though, what MS should have done was revisit XP and make it even better...if they are capable of doing that without messing it up. Most if not all my tech colleagues agree that XP is rock solid.

Windows XP is, IMO, the best ,STABLE platform to date. I for one will not waste money on Windows 7 mostly because I'm still trying to get my several hundred dollar "Microsoft" Vista 64 to work with my "Microsoft Programs" without locking up, freezing, etc. Microsoft FS2004 and now Microsoft X, made by the same company, SHOULD work on Microsoft Vista, you'd think. XP ran both perfectly, although a little slower. I agree "they" shoulda visted the stable XP or at least brought Vista to that dependable status (.ie working) before making ANOTHER O/S. Jusy my and a whole lot of other folks opinion.

I'm using Vista 64 1.5 yrs and did not have significant problems with it besides annoying UAC
Unfortunately MS can't do big jump and will slowly (as any other big monster) optimize code which was written 10 yrs ago and for some unknown reason still part of the core

Wow...what a blast from the past.
I remember years ago when XP came out...sounded just like when Vista came out I didn't know of a SINGLE person that liked XP at first (it was too unstable and had soooo many problems). Give Vista (Windows 7 now really) some time and it will be stable just like XP.

I don't like this one bit... From what I've heard from some friends down a Microsoft, they're taking Vista, fixing it's bugs, and selling it as a new programme that's going to have bugs of it's own. I still think they should stick to service packs and finish what they've started before they run away with a new programme...

You know User Account Controls can be turned off, right? UAC was the first thing to go on this laptop for that very reason, and I have not had one problem, virus, or major major crash since.

I think people need to play around with vista more... I have Vista 64 and yes I'll admit all those "are you sure.." pop ups do get annoying but they have definitely saved my @$$ more than once.... If you don't like 'em, turn 'em off! Also I hear a lot about people complaining about how FS9 doesn't run well in Vista.. well if people spent more time getting to know the OS instead of going in with that "it aint gonna work" attitude.. I have FS9 set to run in compatibility mode for XP SP2. Much better performance, even in the compatibility mode, over what I got with XP as my OS (on the same computer mind you)
As mentioned above XP had all of its own problems in the beginning. Hence why above I mention XP SP2....... as most here at DVA know, SP2 stand for Service Pack2. It just takes time to get all the bugs and if people don't use Vista and give feedback how will those bugs ever get fixed???

I am testing Windows 7 on my computer (dual boot with Vista 64 bit) and I have to say that so far I'm impressed.
Installation took all of 20 minutes compared to the hour and a half Vista took. Windows 7 also recognized all my hardware and correctly set up the boot manager. Boot times are really fast and the new UI features are very nice (Aero Shake, etc). I haven't had one crash. It seems to me that the MS software engineers got it right. It'll become my new OS once it goes gold.

We're in a transition period from 16/32 bit to 32/64 bit and this is really the direction that Vista/7 heads into, more so than XP - yeah, XP is great - I use it, I don't have a single desktop at work on Vista (ran it for testing for a bit, but that was all). Now that Windows 2008 Server is out, Vista may have more business/enterprise support though, but we have to test our apps with 2008 first of course...
Remember, we really had 95, 98, ME (ugh) and converging on other side, NT4, 2000 - these merged into XP and it was a success. Vista I consider an early version of the move onward, and Windows 7 will be another step in that direction.

I have to agree with you there George, W7 From What I have been seeing in the last 4 days since I installed it, has taken a leap forward so far, I have been converting over to 64 Bit for awhile now, started with XP64 Now V64 and Now Betaing the V7. So far I have not had any program abnomilties, IE8 seems a little jittery at times , Loaded Firefox, and got the same experiance, slight flicker here and there. Loaded Scasm without a hassle, The beta drivers for Nvidia seem more crisp, I noticed the wrapping in the text box in IE8 is also awkward here on this site, scrolls right through the text box Well any hoot, I am liking the layout of W7 better than Vista,

I agree with Anthony and Chris, I have had W7 installed for a few days now and it is running great. I am getting good frame rates....pretty comparable to Vista 64 and much better than Win XP. I have 2 other friends with close to the same PC that I have and they are likeing it also.
I am using two monitors and I have found that in Vista64 and W7 that if I minimize the window that FSX is running in and then stretch it to almost the size of the monitor I get twice the FPS that I do if I just hit Mazimize into that monitor.....don't know why...it is wierd.
I will definitely purchase W7 when it comes out later this year or early 2010

Well, I downloaded the beta and it simply crashes while installing it so I am unable to try it. I could understand it if I was running the latest and greatest chipset on an exotic board, but it is an intel X48 chipset (not the latest and greatest X58) you would think it would work "outta the box".
So initial impressions are "very undewhelmed" and the chances of me buying an OS that doesnt even install on my hardware; slim to none.
Windows 7 = FAIL

I found info that Windows 7 is faster than Vista very suspicious
7 has same core as Vista and if they speed up 7 they can do it for Vista as well
But they will not do it because of money what they want for 7

I did a controlled test between Win XP, Vista64 and Win 7.
I used FSXMark07.zip from AVSIM and FRAPS....as laid out in the Jan issue of Computer Pilot. It sets all your display settings the same for all tests...flies the exact same route for 5 minutes and averages the Frame Rates.
I found that Win 7 and Vista 64 had almost the exact same frame rates....within .1fps. My WinXP was 1.0fps faster, which I was surprised to find out......BUT.....when flying in FSX on XP and Vista64 or Win7....Vista64 and Win7 looks much better. The scenery is crisper and more defined. The water effects are amazing....I never saw the clouds reflecting off the water in XP, like I do in Vista & Win7.
So that is what I found.....for what it is worth.

you also have to remember this is a BETA test so its really just to test the stability of the product as well as test out some of the features, you really cant compare Vista to windows 7 until windows 7 is fully released. but it could be a good sign that the marks are the same as Vista because as they work out the kinks in windows 7 its bound to get faster plus as the make major fixes, they are are going to update the beta, only time will tell. maybe next time next year we'll have a full release also there arent any drivers to really use windows 7 i cant wait to be hones because unlike vista there is actually a beta test of windows 7 like they did XP 64bit
