I have been here 15 months maybe, and I just don't get it.
Humor me for just a second......I have been a member of several VAs, some never replied when I applied, some were nothing more than and outdated website, some were so difficult to navigate through I left in frustration.
I had one where my first encounter with another pilot fell into a name calling session, because I was pressed for time and elected a straight in approach (into the wind) rather than using the usual landing runway, even though there was no other traffic around. I guess that made me "lazy".
I had one Hub Manager try to recriut me after cussin' like a drunken boson's mate after a tail strike on touchdown. Blaming the aircraft. Nothing against druken boson's mate, some of my best freinds are.
I had one VA who's only responses to consructive critism were to say, " If you don't like it leave.", or "Why don't you start your own VA if you don't like it here." All I wanted was a VA sponsored ACARS system and more on line events.
Nothing like that has never happend here, ever.
What's the secret.... top teir pilots, Over bearing managers...Do you guys show up at unruly pilot homes and beat them with sticks? I don't know but it works.
Before any one thinks there is an alterior motive there isn't. I don't want an ACP/CP or Directors position. I don't have what it takes to be a Senior Captain. I am not fit to tie most of your shoelaces.
Every one here is great. If I miss a radio call on VATSIM, two or three guys IM and let me know. The other night I gave out misinformation about ILS DHs. I was corrected, and the Liam apologized to me for me being wrong! I don't get it.
No attitudes, egos, morons, goof balls, jerks....etc.
HOW...I guess I shouldn't wonder how I guess I should sit back and enjoy.
I just wanted to say.....you guys do a great job here.
I guess really, all I want are the new guys to realize how lucky we are.
Thanks
Don ThomasSenior Captain, B737-800

"Do you guys show up at unruly pilot homes and beat them with sticks?"
I laughed so hard after reading this. LOL
I think the main reason is the fact that we have thousands of members, and a very active forum.
When there are so many members, the power hungry, immature, and jerks cannot satisfy their needs to bully and usually end up getting themselves banned.
Its a phenomenon that happens when there are alot of people in one community.
Most of the VAs you are talking about are run by teenagers with no lives. I hate to put it that way, but its the truth.
They can't handle the responsibility that comes with running any organization.
I'm just guessing of course, but I imagine all the very high-ups here at DVA are grown adults.
I say that because the structure of this organization is highly advanced, something that very few teenagers can do.
Don't get me wrong, I know teenagers that run Flight Sim organizations, and are very successful and productive, but something like DVA is hugely advanced compared to any other organization.

Trevor, I think you might be surprised. There are quite a few teenagers here (not me...I'm in my 50's), and they are quite knowledgeable and mature. They may not be VPs here, but they still are active members of the community who provide valuable input. I treat everyone with respect here, whether they're 75 or 15. Besides, the 15-year olds probably know more about FS than me...
It seems to me that the problem with many VAs is that either the founders lose interest in their hobby or the officers are such control freaks that they take umbrage with anyone who disagrees with them in the forums. The management here is very committed and actively watches all threads to keep the nonsense to a minimum
Don--one of the reasons I joined DVA after a long search was the availability of the water cooler to non-members (to read, anyway). I could gauge the temperament of the community, and I was (and still am) highly impressed.
Nobody beats anyone with sticks here....that's my wife's job.

Yeah I mean the decision makers...
I don't doubt for one moment the mental capabilities of teenagers, thats not what i'm getting at.
There are a few teenagers who are competent and knowledgeable, capable of just about any assigned task, I believe DVA is blessed with many people like that.
Since the subject of age is up, feel free to guess my age.

Not to toot our horn, BUT...take a look at the staff page at DVA. I counted 39 staff members who contribute in their own ways to manage and administrate Delta Virtual Airlines. Those people put in a lot of time and effort to make this VA a great place for those of us who like to fly. There are also a lot of Senior Captains, Captains, and First Officers that also are dedicated to making this VA a nice place to have fun. We all know that it is a "hobby" but if it is not fun then people will leave quickly and in great numbers. Over the course of my years at DVA, I found out that it doesn't matter how old someone is that matters but whether they are here to share a good time with other aviation enthusiasts. We all have a responsibility to nurture and protect the environment here at DVA so the fun can continue. In case you can't guess, I'm having a ball here!!

We have something far more effective than beating unruly pilots with sticks. We just put 'em in the right seat of an EMB-120 and let them ride along as Keechbert flies the Mulch One departure out of SLC, then let them shoot a couple of approaches with Terry.

This is the best VA I have found. I mean when I am on VATSIM the only people who try to help are members of DVA. This is the place where I think you should go to be in a VA. Everything is done fast and professional. I thank all the staff that use up there free time to keep this VA the best one in the world.

I am agreeing with all of the above . I to, searched the websites for a "home", came across the ones that left me cold, and found Deltava. I am a real world private pilot in northern Canada. I am NOT a 757 captain, I am NOT IFR certified, I DO NOT fly into high traffic areas, I fly in areas where the radio is the thing on the end of the curlly cord and hardly used. I have learned so much from "you guys". I have flown with FS since the days of DOS.. I know I know I have jeans older that some of the pilots on here BUT age means nothing, enthusiasm is everything and like a guild one needs to be willing to learn and also willing to teach those who want it . OK OK I am off the soap box now some else's turn

I stumbled across DVA through Google, but couldn't have been better. I have since looked at a lot of other VA's for comparison, and they don't hold a candle to DVA because of one important thing, to me at least: we're flexible! Fly whatever flight you want, whenever you want, so long as you have the ratings and can legally do it. Fly online or offline, your choice. Want a rating in a new plane? Do the checkride and get it. Other VA's have some many odd and silly rules, DVA is very simple.
In addition, I have learned so much about FS from everyone here it's sinful. If you look in my log book at my earlier flights, they're horrible. No SID's or STARS's, horrific landings (one at -1747 fpm), and even a figure 8 over KIND because I went missed three times. Now I'm filing more accurate flight plans thanks to discussions in the cooler, and my landings are much better, pretty much staying under -450 fpm. And the checkrides, though I might have white knuckled most of them, were tons of fun.

I have known Don Thomas for a number of years. He is wise and stealthy.....he is an airline driver of the highest magnitude.
I knew him as a young WWA charter pilot flying people who had phobias about ducks and stuff and he had to deal with that.
We still need cargo pilots at WWA Don so do not be a stranger.

I think we all here share the common interest in flying and helping others fly. I also think that it is a large organization with a lot of diversity and varying levels of experience. Those who are new love to learn and those who are experienced love to help teach and watch others learn! It's amazing how supportive it is here. I really am blown away every time I do a flight that I can track my flight on Google Earth, or actually get the Oceanic Tracks, or pick out the flight number, flightaware it and get the actual route that a real pilot will be flying. There's just too much to say about it! Scott, if you don't mind me asking, what's WWA? I ask because I'm a CFMEII, just curious...I've got 680 hours, nearly 200 multi, without my logbook in front of me, about 350 dual given (instructor...)

Yeah, that is Westwind Virtual Paul. Sorry I could not offer real world choices to you. Your real world time is about like mine except I have much more as an instructor. I have not flown real world in nearly twenty years. I got a Private ticket in 1968 and was a real world CFI until 1980. I was a CFI at 21 years of age and taught Vanderbilt students who were often older in the ROTC program.
I am older than most here yet I still run 10k events and have been doing circuit weight training for years.

I joined DVA the same month I blew out my knee. Less than 24 hours after I had surgery on my knee, I attempted to fly a leg (no pun intended). That was not my best moment. I'm getting ready to return to work this week, and I'm actually bummed about that. Clearly that's going to cut into my flight time, and frankly that's unacceptable.
I too joined SOMETHING before I found DVA. I spent 3 days just trying to place files in the proper location so I could start flying. Finally I said heck with it. (actually came out different than that)
What I have found here, is a group of people that are hands down the best. The professionalism is unequaled! the vast amount of knowledge in here is beyond amazing. As long as you treat people with the same courtesy and respect that you yourself demand, there's a spot for you here at DVA. Oh, one other thing. You gotta have fun here!

I have tried out many VA's, most are very lame compared to DVA. I also am in FEDEX virtual cargo, very good, but DVA is the supreme VA, and it took me test driving many VA's to figure that out. I like everything about this airline it is a very well run VA.
I also love this part about DVA,"we're flexible! Fly whatever flight you want, whenever you want, so long as you have the ratings and can legally do it. Fly online or offline, your choice. Want a rating in a new plane? Do the checkride and get it. Other VA's have some many odd and silly rules, DVA is very simple. "
This makes it cool, and DVA's scedule is so big, you have massive choices of where to fly. I am a perminant part of DVA for ever as it is the ultimate in DVA's

I couldn't agree more with all the positive comments. This organization is world class in every way, I was just thinking about this earlier today and then ran across this post well said!

I don't see how they could make it any better, maybe add a teamspeak channel for chat, but that would be about it.

I second, third, and more the comments made here about VA's... Have been involved with many a VA.. WWAL was my first one back in 96... The days of Hal Groce and Sean "Crash" Reilly When I discovered DVA, I fell in love with it immediately and have left any others for many of the same reasons that are already mentioned here.
Thanks DVA !!! Keep up the good work!

Captain Thomas, I personally have the pleasure of working for one of the best law enforcement agencies in the country (IMHO). I will tell you that since joing this VA over a year ago, I have been absolutely pleased with the caliber of people, the commitment of the staff, the environment of support, and the willingess for every pilot I know to help. I can tell you from experience that this is every bit the well oiled, fine tuned machine of an organization that I make my living with...we owe many thanks to the senior staff and volunteer staff members who create and maintain a welcoming environment. I do not agree that there are no ego's here...I believe the ego's are huge. The difference is that those with the biggest ego's never credit themselves, they are always on the lookout to promote the the organization and trumpet its successes. That sir, is the DVA "ego.." We love to fly and it truly does show around the corporate offices. I have met and befriended some of the finest people trough this virtual airline. After 24 years of carrying a gun and badge, I think I am a pretty good judge of character. We're glad to have YOU!

What's the secret.... top teir pilots, Over bearing managers...Do you guys show up at unruly pilot homes and beat them with sticks? I don't know but it works.
Guess the words out, darn it, that was classified info LOL .....
I could not agree with you more on the comments about togetherness, been in a few va's when I first got into this seriously, and dropped the others, I stayed put. I Met a lot of great people here over the years and lost a couple of good friends as well, but the spirit of this organization is what drove it to the success that it has in the VA community. glad you are enjoying the ride as much as I am....
You are free to fly about the country now

Time for one of the old guys!---What we have here is a group(rather large) of "aviation-flight sim-real world" people from ALL over the world, that have found one place(DVA) on this thing called the internet to enjoy a "hobby", met people with similar interests(aviation) that allows all of us to have the "freedom" to enjoy our passion. Each of us has their own reasons for being here. Hats off to Terry and Luke, who have put the basic design together in 2002 and continue these solid guidelines to this day, and George,Jim P and Jim W, the CPs, ACPs, flight academy, dispatch, entire staff, etc (so I will not miss anyone) and especially all of the member pilots(thats you and me) who treat each other with respect as we fly thru the virtual skies. Everyone gets involved and takes "ownership" of their membership at DVA. We are here because we want to be, not because we must or have to be. This is a "special" community of people of all ages who have figured out how to enjoy each other with a common interest-aviation. Kinda unique in this world.
When we do have the chance to meet "the "Invisible Friends", we feel like they have been a good friend, great neighbor, etc for many years..we have a common bond...So to all, keep up the great work, enjoy the hobby and continue to contribute to "Simply the BEST VA in the world" (disclaimer for bias)....

Well, I hate to be the lone dissenter...even in a little way. TBH, my first brush with DVA was not pleasant, and I have a few lingering issues with certain people. But, that being said, I came back, gave it a second shot, and have found a very friendly and nice group of people, professional without being stuffy, friendly and helpful.
So all in all, a great job by a great VA with outstanding people.
