Get the E8400 over the Q6600 for flight simming. Also get the new DDR3 ram instead of the old DDR2. I had the same question
about the Q6600 vs the E8400. http://www.deltava.org/thread.do?id=0x11f17 I eventually went with the E8400.
my specs:
Motherboard: Asrock P43 twins 1600
Processor: Intel E8400 core 2 duo @ 3.0ghz
Ram: 2gb G'skill DDR3.
Graphics card: Nvidia 9800GT 512mb Pcie 2.0
FS hard drive: 80GB @7200 rpm
PSU: 600 watts
OS: Windows XP professional 32bit
FSX Shots

there should be no reason to shock yourself, you should not be anywhere near the inside of the computer while it is connected to a power source. I suggest getting an anti-static band to ground yourself and keep from ruining your components. If not, make sure to ground yourself by grabbing the metal case with both hands before touching any components.

Listen to Robert. Static electric discharge can make new ram or almost any computer hardware component worthless or no good. If you have any questions let me know. Also make sure your MB is compatible with your case and vice versa.

I built my new playtoy last year. I've done a lot of tweaking to FSX and I get about 50+ fps.
Quadcore Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650, 3GHZ | Intel DX38BT | 4GB RAM | NVidia GeForce 8800 GT | Vista x64
Even with just 4mb of RAM, it smokes.

I've read a few different reports that show how having 4GB of RAM for FS is better than 8GB. I honestly still don't understand the specifics on it, but the benchmark tests were pretty conclusive. I had planned to load my machine with 8GB, but ended up only ordering 4GB at the last minute. Just some food for thought.

I just built a system centered around the new Phenom 2 940 that runs fsx at some amazing resolutions. Probably cheaper than an intel build too.

if you really want to save a little money and get better performance i reccomend the Phenom II 940, its 3ghz at $235, and you can get a good motherboard for just over $100. or now you can get a tri-core from amd at 2.8ghz for $154

I see your initial list had a power supply but your actual parts list does not. Did you get the 600W PS like you planned?
