Hello all, I'm running F.S.X on a dell about 4 years old with a pentium4 an nvidia g force 6200 oc and 2 gig of ram. It runs ok at medium/low settings. Do you think I would be better off with flight sim.2004?
Thank you all so very much!!

definately....
even with the latest and greatest setups there will be times when FSX struggles, more so if you are running 3rd party aircraft and scenery.
I guess that's part of the reason a lot of people are still running FS9, better performance, the ability to run more addons with less of an impact on frame rates.
I am running a 3.2GHz Quad core (trying to get it to 3.6ghz) with a gForce 8800GT with settings at med-high/high and there are times when i think I should be running FS9 instead of FSX.
I run FS9 on my laptop which has a core2 based Mobile CPU which I guess should out perform a P4; a gForce 6800GT Mobile and I wouldnt even attempt to run FSX on it as I know it would just be too frustrating with low frame rates.
Just the sheer number of addons for FS9 compared FSX is reason enough to run FS9, it's really tempting me anyway....
That's just my opinion anyway

Hey Dave.. I am running a Q6600, duo core, 8800GTX, with 3 gigs of RAM and my FSX is cranked almost all the way up and I have no real issues with FPS.. Once in a while when I'm comming into one of the bigger airports at night it will stutter a tiny bit but I have my scenery cranked all the way to max, my clouds are on "detailed clouds" and is cranked all the way up so I don't know why you would have a hard time with FSX.. Sounds like you have a good enough system to run it the same as me if not better.. I"ve found that turning down the highway traffic quite a bit and also turning down airport vehicles quite a bit helps a ton.. But the bottem line is, and Dave is right on this.. If you don't have a pretty healthy system then you are deffinately better off staying with FS9 or you will be pulling your hair out..

Hey dale,
I have my traffic turned upto high/very high and only have 2GB of ram. I consider any drop below 15fps a problem and I begrudge spending more to get 4GB which windows will ignore upto 1GB of and if i only install 3 GB then I will lose the Dual channel functionality of the RAM controller.
With 4 sticks of 1GB RAM i will have to slow down the memory bus and as mentioned loose 1GB of addressable RAM due to the addressing contraints of a 32 bit operating system. I can buy 2x2GB of RAM and maintain the MemBus at 400MHz (or higher witht eh overclock) but I'd rather not waste the money on memory that XP (32bit) will ignore. I will at some point get a 64 bit OS, probably not Vista as it has to be honest been yet another monumental dissapointment from Microsoft; anyone remember WinME??? that soon was forgotten for XP.
I digress slightly, but the point is no matter how hardcore your system is FSX will stall and stutter, the only system I know of which will even come close to running FSX at full high seetings is this:
http://3xs.scan.co.uk/ShowSystem.asp?SystemID=827
and I dont know about you, but I cant afford to buy that, I could build the same for less, but even then I cant afford it

Dude.. Did I read that correctly.. 11,000 DOLLARS..???? Wow.. I thought I was spending a ton of money last spring when I built my new computer.. 1400 bucks.. lol. Yeah I've looked at some of the stuff they have for hardware out there and they have video cards that cost twice what I paid for my whole computer.. lol. Yeah it really sucks to be poor does'nt it..? Then again if I had money I'd be out flying real planes and you guys would never have seen me.. lol. I guess I should amend something I said earlier.. I have 4 gigs of ram in the two stick thing but my 32 bit XP only utilizes like 2.8 gigs I think or something like that.. But I get between 24-30 FPS pretty steady.. I'm actually fairly impressed at how well my system works with FSX.. But then I found a few tweeks to the fsx.cfg that have helped a bunch also. I thought I had things set up pretty well til I found this link.. Don't remember where I found it but I saved it to my favorites incase I needed it again or someone else needed it to help them get FSX running smoother.. Really helped me alot..

Dale,
Im in the UK, as is Scan so the price is actually £11000, none of that disneyland money you have stateside
Either way though, anything over £2000 is excessive for a new PC especially when you consider the hardware will cost 50% what you pay for it 6 months later!
I'll check that link out later and see if it helps.

Dale,
what have you done???
I followed the link and ran throught the settings, wow the test flight from seatle looks amazing. I have never seen so much scenery!
I thought I had it all set up right with a decent average FPS. Started a flight from amsterdam to heathrow and just as I was holding short of the runway, Out of memory error.
First one I have ever had with FSX, but I have never had the sliders so high! Might have to tone it down a bit!
It's pandoras box.... i've opned it and now I'm reaping the whirlwind. (I blame you!!! )

lol Dave.. I guess I should have told you that I did'nt do everything he suggested in that tutorial.. He goes through making changes in XP, VISTA, etc. and I did'nt really get into the system to much.. The main things I did was the changes to the FSX.cfg, added those 4 lines about runway lights, made sure my "wideview aspect" was set to true because I'm using a widescreen monitor, and I made a couple of system changes that I felt comfortable doing, ie: changed the amount of space the system uses for memory for the sim and I also lessened the amount of space that "system restore" uses by about half, then just kinda tweeked my FSX settings as I flew to get everything smoothed out.. But I'm like you.. WOW..!! I have scenerey to spare and very detailed.. Oh I also tryed out setting my FPS to "unlimited" and it seems to make sense to me because if it can run faster than 20 fps, why not let it? It seems to me if you lock the FPS then you limit the system to only fly at that and it might want to go faster.. The sim is only going to do as many FPS as it can, no matter where you have FPS set to.. Does that make sense? Sounds like you might have to get that extra gig of RAM tho..??
I think you'll be very happy when you get it all "tuned" proberly..
Cheers..!!
Or maybe I should say.. "Sorry Dave".. lol

Dale, as a result of you forcing me to crank up my fsx setting I have decided I need more power .
The overclock of my CPU from the standard 2.66Ghz to 3.2GHz wasnt enough and I have spent the last 3 days trying to push the CPU further. I think i have managed to get a stable 3.5GHz out of my Q6700 (3.6GHz is a bridge too far!!!) the temps and voltages are a little higher than I'd like but FSX is looking more fluid but still needs tweaking.
I flew my first full flight on FSX since finally getting my DA Fokker which I have been waiting to be delivered for some time. Just as I touched down at EGLL I got the dreaded out of memory error message and ignored it until I taxied to the gate. Ended the flight in ACARS, switched back to FSX and got a BSOD nv_disp.dll pagefault error as it all got too much for my poor PC. Looks like I am still going to have to fettle the FSX config further to get better performance and I will have to get more memory too, but that means Vista x64 aswell to make the most of the extra memory... I hate vista as well.
So, I need to get some watercooling, more memory and Vista. I hope you are pleased with yourself Dale

Glad I could be of assistance Dave.. lol. I know exactly how you feel my friend.. I have mine set up pretty close however, I have'nt over clocked my CPU or my Video card and I've gotten it pretty smooth.. I think that little extra RAM I have is the ticket.. I did a flight to Gunnison CO and while in flight was hitting from 42 to 60 FPS.. At loweer altitudes and closer to bigger airports I'm getting anywhere from 18 to 25 and it's quite smooth with only the occasional blip.. Of course that depends on the aircraft I'm flying etc. but over all I'm very happy with my results but would also like to upgrade my hardware somemore but, that will have to wait a while.. I have a pretty good heat sink on my CPU but I need liqued cooled also. I have to leave the side off my box now to keep it cool enough while in the sim but I have scenery..!!
