I think I posted a video card thread once before but it's been a long time and I know that technology changes so fast. I have limited computer time so I don't have time to research things as best as I would like. So I'm turning to my DVA family to help me out ... thanks in advance. My old card bit the dust and I need a new one. I don't have a ton to spend on a new card so here are the parameters...
Old Card was an ATI Radeon X700 Pro 256 mb PCIe 16x. I liked the card but I know I can probably get something better for the same price I paid for that one.
MOBO: MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD
Video Card: ATI Radeon X700PRO 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 2.4GHz Socket 939 Single-Core Processor
RAM: 2GB of Corsair XMS PC3200 RAM
At the time I purchased all the components to build my PC the video card cost $138.50. I probably wouldn't go any higher in cost now either. I guess my question would really be should I just replace it with the same card (assuming I can find one) or shoot for something at least equal or a little better given the budget? Any input would be welcomed.

Ryan,
Thanks for the info. Saved me some bucks. Do you think I would get better performance if I upgraded to Vista?
Anyone pipe in a response. I have an optional upgrade, but am not convinced if it is worth the hassle.
Thanks, Clarke

No don't upgrade to Vista if you have XP running fine. I have both and I got Vista as good if not better than XP in performance after a lot of tweaking. In the end Vista will look just like XP as the Aero effect hurts performance and is good to disable it for gaming.

Captain Ryan,
Thanks, as I kinda expected the answer to be. I have a laptop with Vista, and I still don't like it. Has a mind of its own and seems to be upgraded on a semi-weekly basis. Sorta like a work in progress. Thank you very much for your advise.
Take care, Clarke

Shawn Just to let you know Its still here, if and when you want it. Clarke If you want an OS go with XP 64 XP32 is Solid, with the PMDG and other Payware A/C that are becoming more sophisticated, A 64 Bit OS would be the choice, One less OOM Factor to get rid of. With the coming of Win7 And now that Vista 64 is out in full force , drivers are not much of an issue anymore, Except for Creative. They still don't get it right

Just a heads up, but Tom's hardware web site has a section where you can pick a game and they will rate the graphic cards for that game. As for FSX or FS9, the recommended Gforce 9800GTX+.

The GTX 260 is an excellent card for the price (roughly $200). Performs better than the 9800GTX+ (Essentially the 8800GTX+) for not much more money.
XP x64 drivers are hit-and-miss, not all companies support them, so if you were going to upgrade to a x64 operating system, I'd definitely go Vista. Upgrading to Vista when you have a video card that supports DX10 will actually boost your computer's performance in DX10 enabled FSX. There are programs available that will disable Aero and other unnecessary programs when starting up FSX. I think one is called AlaclarityPC?
However, if you can, I would definitely wait to buy a new graphics card and operating system until after Windows 7 comes out. While W7 is just Vista re-worked, it performs just as well as XP on my computer (I'm in the Beta, I love it). Plus the new start-bar is just awesome. The reason I'd have you wait to get a graphics card until W7 comes out is because they will be releasing DirectX 11 with W7, at which point all DX10 cards will be outdated.
