Hi, guys. I've been browsing the Net for a fun turbo prop to purchase, and I came across these ATR's (even come with a Delta Connection skin):
http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=FL1-ATR-002
I noticed that the only ATR flights here at this site are in Europe. Is this because Delta no longer uses the ATR for any short-leg flights here in the US? I'd guess that the RJ has made the turbo props useless?
Thanks,
Jay

Jay, if you are rated to fly the ATR, you can fly any flight - US, Europe, the world with the plane as long as it can make the distance. And you are rated in the ATR-72, B1900, BAE-146, CRJ-200, CRJ-700, DO-328, EMB-120, ERJ-135, ERJ-145, F100, F70, S340
I have the Flight1 ATR and love it.

Okay, thanks for the feedback, Andrew!
I figured we weren't flying anything that Delta isn't using -- glad I'm wrong.
I'm looking forward to giving this puppy a run in FSX.

Jay,
I had the flight1 ATR for fs9 for a short while, and then requested a refund. It is a nice aircraft, I just had numerous/unresolved troubles loading fsbuild flightplans.

You can save the FSBuild plan as a normal FSX or FS9 flight plan and import it that way.
FSBuild is tricky if you don't physically go in to the OPTIONS menu on the left, and set your ATR location - you can click export to ATR, FSNav, whatever and it will never get there since the path isn't specified. I have to direct mine to another drive since my FSBuild and FSX/FS9 reside on their own drives.
Regardless - I like the plane

Yep, I'm quite familiar with FSbuild. I have a huge list of exported FPs every time I make a build. The issue was not that I couldn't get a flight plan built for the ATR, it was that 1/2 of them would cause a crash to desktop when I loaded into the FMC. No thanks!
I was unaware you could use a default fs9 flight plan and load it up - never saw that option.

Jay, Atlantic Southeast Airlines flew the Delta Connection ATRs on short-hop routes in the Southeast (hubbed in Atlanta) up until last year--they flew them to Macon, Savannah, Myrtle Beach, Birmingham, etc. I'm not sure exactly when they used them last, but ASA's pulled all their ATRs. There's nothing wrong with using them on Delta routes if you're rated for them, which you are.
The ATR is an outstanding addon. It's very complex, the manual is over 300 pages and you'll need to read it.

Thanks for the clarification, guys. I installed the a/c last night & hope to fly it after work today. Yea, that manual is amazing -- the PDF has 481 pages. lol.
Sorry to hear about the incompatibilities you experienced, Daniel. I don't currently use the FSBuild utility, but I'm glad you mentioned the problem. Will save me some headaches later on.

I would say read, read, read! LOL. I've owned the Flight 1 ATR for about 2 years now and am more than pleased. I however will say that you are going to get frustrated with the a/c very easily if you don't look through the manual on certain points at least. Such as how to export your FS generic flight plan to the FMS, starting, proper use of the hydraulic system, and ESPECIALLY the auto-pilot functions. The a/c is pretty complex and they did an awesome job with the systems.
Have fun!

Yea, the manual is pretty amazing. I noticed that this plane seems extra heavy on frame rates; so, I will need to cut my settings down to accommodate this baby. Or, who knows...maybe something else is making my system drag.
Every version of MSFS has always been heavy on the systems that exist in its time. hehe

The ATR is VERY resource intensive, I run FSX and high settings without problems, but when
I first got the ATR when I tried to use the highest graphic settings in the cockpit it was REALLY
causing some frame lagging. Fortunately the lower setting looks just fine and runs within
acceptable rates.
One thing I would say about the ATR manual, it WAY overwhelms you with trivia and in that
forest of info you'll probably miss the 2 or 3 pages of the basic tips you need to fly it well
The plane has the equivalent of the old "NAV/GPS" switch, only its not called that, its in a
small panel, and GPS is called RNAV, you need that to follow a flight plan... BUT, you
have to switch back to VOR mode for an ILS landing to work. I think that might be the
single biggest gotcha you can run into.
Oh, another is the stupid thing seems to be unable to handle the ZFW in anything but
the British system, that is annoying but a minor incovenience. I really dont use the FMS
for a VNAV sort of profile, I handle the vertical and just want the computer to handle
the laternal so I've taken to treating the FMS almost like the builtin Garmin, works for
me
Nothing else comes close to the sophistication of this plane (that is until PMDG get's
their new turboprop out), I would recommend buying it and take it as a challenge
to learn to fly it.

Thank you for pointing out the problems with the frame rates (even on a solid system, like yours) and the deficiencies in the flight manual. I'm sure it'll save me a few headaches. And, I don't feel so bad that I have to dial down the setting in FSX just to fly this thing.

I'm one of those that really loves the Flight 1 ATR. To me its an amazing plane to fly. Not PMG standards
but very nice. My system is like 5 years old (no upgrades) and it works very well on my system. I am
using FS9 though. I must be honest I looked over the manual and wasnt alot of help so I read their forums
to learn how to work everything.
When the a/c was first released I painted a livery in Eastern Airlines, and managed to get it on their main
page. I think If someone will play around with the a/c and take time to get to know it, they can
learn to love it. Only thing I really dislike is taxiing the darn thing. If not carefull you'l be taxiing at 30 kts, lol.
Oh yeah I also had a few videos from some place that makes them for different airlines and bought one
of Continental express with the Atr 42. I watched that several times and that helped me learn the a/c
as well. Imho, its the best payware prop as far realism goes out there. Anywas, thats just my 2 cents
worth.

I had the same issue with taxiing. Just the slightest nidge would send her on her way. What helped was fiddling with the feather control to about the notched middle position which I think is for ground use and cruise and it was fine.
