Ok.. I was flying a leg from SLC to RNO last night and my sim started to lock up on me.. Not stutter, it was smooth as glass but would just completely lock up for about 2 or 3 seconds and then be smooth again.. Caused me to get a 300 and some odd ft. per min landing in Reno.. After I taxied to the gate I minimized my sim and brought my NVidia monitor and noticed my CPU was at 109 degrees.. Is that to hot? Am I pushing something to hard..? I think part of the problem may have been a scenery cfg. error that I got rid of thanks to Dave G. I tryed a test flight after I fixed the error and there was'nt any locking up.. Landed at SLC without a glitch except for the CRJ that was cleared to land on the same runway as me and flew right over the top of my little cessna.. How Rude..!! lol. I don't know if it will get that hot now that I've fixed the scenery error but was just wondering how high a CPU should get..
Oh.. I almost forgot.. I'm running a Q6600 intel cor 2 duo processor and an 8800GTX, XP,
Thanks..
Cheers..!

Ah the age old overclockers question. How hot is too hot for my CPU???
Well, I'm affriad I cant think in degF as it is a totally absurd measurement scheme and I have used degC my whole life. The rated junction temperature of EACH core in my Q6700 (so I assume it is the same for the Q6600 as it is the same chip except mines unlocked to 10x multi and yours is 9x) is 100 degC. If the cores ever reach that temperature it is pretty bad the CPU should shut down to stop it exploding
I have oveclocked mine to 3.5GHz and when stability testing with Prime or OCCT, individual cores will hit 65-70 degC, but synthetic stress and benchmarking software doesn't behave like "real" applications and will ge the cores hotter than something like FSX will.
I recommend you download CoreTemp (google will find it easily) and you can run that in the taskbar showing the temps of all 4 cores, mine will peak about 60-62 degC running FSX and so it isnt a major problem. The nvidia panel maybe reading a temp probe on the Mobo under the CPU rather than the CPU itself.
The general answer to your question is that keeping the CPU cooler is better as it operates better but modern CPU's can run pretty hot for short periods without causing any damage.
I would recomend ensuring your cooler is clean and isnt full of dust, upgrading to a 3rd party CPU cooler is hightly recomended and reseating the cooler with a quality thermal compound (artic silver 5 for example) is essential.
Hold on, are you running a Core2Duo (E6600) or a Core2Quad (Q6600), are you using the standard intel cooler, is the CPU overclocked?

109 F to a processor is nothing. My I7 920 runs at 105 constantly and only gos up a little more running FSX. I am not using a stock cooler but you should be more than fine. Start worrying when you approach 170F or 80C. Also as stated before take a little compressed can air to your cooler every now and then to scatter the bunnies. Just don't breathe them they will make you sneeze. Arctic silver 5 is very good too. That is what i use the thermal paste that usually comes applied is OK not great.
I am used to working in both C and F so going back and forth isn't that bad.

I don't over clock at all Dave. I've never had to and I figured for what little better performance I do get from over clocking it's not worth the extra life it bleeds from my CPU. DUO core Q6600. My MoBo is an NVidia, don't remember the specs. And my computer was custome built. Meaning a computer geek friend of mine and I sat down and went over the build and he, (who knows light years more than I do ), helped me put together a system capable of running FSX.. So we're not talking about some "off the shelf" Del, or HP or whatever. I have a pretty good heat sink on my CPU, cant remember the exact brand or type now of that either, My case is special for "gaming computers". Medium tower, has two 5" fans in the front drawing air in, two 5" fans in the rear drawing air out, and it has an 8" fan on the top drawing air up. I'll post a pic in a new thread of my Nvidia system monitor so you can see where things are running etc. as most of this computer lingo is beyond my comprehention.. lol

That case sounds like an antec 900, with it's 120mm front and rear fans and 200mm roof fan... embrace the metric system
I would image the stutters you are talking about in FSX are when the computer has to move a large amount of data in or out of the page file, it happens on mine every now and again, and will get worse the more software you have running and the higher quality settings you have, unless you have LOTS of RAM and therefor VISTAx64
If you aren't overclocking and are indeed using the antec 900 there is very little chance that the CPU is overheating, you will need to be at over 70degC for individual cores for overheating of the CPU to be a consideration.
With regard to overclocking, my q6700 is running nearly a whole gig faster than it does at stock, which results in about a 30-35% increase in performance. To put it in cash terms, to buy a CPU off the shelf with the same performance, it would have cost over 3 times the price of the one I bought.
Overclocking isnt for everyone, it is hit and miss. It has taken me a lot of frustration to get my system stable at these speeds and as a result I have missed lots of flying time tweaking the voltages and clock frequencies, but I am pleased with the results. The alternative to overclocking though is to have a budget like Chuongs and buy a hardcore I7 system

It is an ANTEC G-Skill case.. You're probably right about the 900 part. I don't remember now. You can look at the other thread I posted in this same section about this with a pic of my Nvidia monitor while running FS.. Tell me what you see my friend cuz I don't know what most of that stuff means..
Cheers..!

What have you got against the I7 JK I have overclocked for years and have never had a processor fail KNOCK ON WOOD HERE. I have the 900 like you probably do and all fans set to medium. MB temp never gets high. It will keep you cool. How much ram you got in that bad boy?? If you are running vista i would suggest 6GB it has made a big difference for me. any questions i am free to help with answers.

Well I guess my little Q6600 core 2 Duo is doing a pretty smart job then.. Guess I'm happy with it and I won't worry aobut frying it now.. lol. I think I will maybe, try a slight overclock on the CPU and Vid card and see if that smooths out the little freezes I get sometimes.. But I think I'm running it right on the edge now.. We'll see what happens..
Thanks guys..
Cheers..!

Dave i put off upgrading for 6 months to be able to save to get one. I usually overhaul every 3 years. this last time was 3.75 years. i usually never buy this new but i think this one should last around 4. I hope. For me the difference that i was gonna spend was only around 200 bucks. I am glad i did wait.

Sorry Benjamin I forgot to tell you.. I'm running 4 gigs of ram but my XP 32bit system, as I understand it, only recognizes 2.8 gigs of that ram so yeah.. I could stand a 64bit OS but this is going to have to do for now.. No money means no upgrades for a while.. Stupid recession..! lol

I've got you beat. I run my CPU, when under full load (meaning, FSX, iTunes, ACARS, Firefox, AIM, etc...) at somewhere between 90-98 C. Granted, its a laptop, and the normal operating range is up to like 110C. I've never been able to get it hotter than 99C, thankfully.

Ok you guys.. Now you've got me messing with the "over clock" thing.. lol. The first three times I tryed to overclock my CPU and GPX My whole system locked up and I had to reboot but I just kept messing with the settings and I think I've got it pretty close now.. I can see quite a change in the way my sim is working..! But I called my puter geek friend, he's actually my sons friend, lucky for me the kids a computer geneous, and he's going to stop by maybe tomorrow and help me hone it in to perfection.. lol. Expect some awsome screens when I get it set up right. Getting FEX really helped out my environment too.. My clouds and sky and everything looks so real I can almost smell the rain..!
Cheers..!

Good luck with overclocking Dale, It's like a roller coaster trying to get your system stable...
The oooooooooooooohhh as it boots into windows succesfully followed by the ahhhhhhhhhhhh as it crashes 2 minutes into a stress test with Prime or OCCT

Q6600 Antec 900 homebuilt system, stock Intel cooler, overclocked to 2.97--worst I've seen my cpu temps is 46C. I tried the next step up (3.06 I think) and the temps jumped to 50 and I thought there was some weirdness going on (system posted just fine, but I didn't like how it ran), so I dropped back down. I know I could go higher if I start fooling with the voltages and getting a real CPU cooler, but I'm happy with my FSX frames and want to spend my time flying...

I hear ya Jack.. But you have to understand that ever since I decided to go with FSX and uninstalled FS9, I have'nt done a ton of flying and FSX just kinda sat there on my system for almost a year with me only occasionally flying a little GA or doing the missions. I never really got into "setting it up properly" so since I joined DVA I've decided it's time to get it up and running right.. So not only have I had to learn all about DVA and the operations here, but have also had to get FSX up to snuff. The same thing I had to do with FS9. But I think I've just about got everything running right now with the exception of a few little problems that I still need to work out. Believe me I'd like to just not have to worry about anything but flying but unfortunately I still need to get things working right. I'm a fanatic about making the flying experience in FS as "real as it gets" without having to spend a ton of money to do so.. Almost there tho. I have managed to fly 27 legs in the process of all this tweeking and configuring etc. I'll be racking em up pretty soon..
Cheers..!
