So I am going to be buying a new computer and the powers above have determined that it will be a mac (non negotiable somewhat unfortunately). I have about $1500 to spend on the computer it self and this is what im looking at:
http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail.asp?Redir=1&description=Apple-24"+iMac+-+Intel+Core+2+Duo+2.66GHz,+4GB+RAM,+640GB+hard+drive,+NVIDIA+GeForce+9400M-iMac&dpno=7758230
(sorry, specs down @ bottom). I have a copy of XP that I own and I'm looking at either buying a new external hard drive (what hard drive should I buy as well) and putting both XP and FSX on it or just putting FSX on it and have XP on the main HD.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance :-)

the problem with throwing everything on an external harddrive is that you will see poor load times especially if its USB, firewire may offer better performance but how much i dont know. im not much of a mac person but if you want to run XP, you have 2 options. get software that lets windows run inside of OSX, it creates a virtual machine, or create like a "dual-boot," i think however you need software for that to create the partition, im not positive if you can create one without it, knowing apple. they do make software for that. but i recommend at least putting windows on the main HDD, but if you have 640GB, put it all on one.
the virtual machine option: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832269005

Mac is by far the best system out there.. There is no argument that can be won against it..That being said my good friend Dylan... Mac is amazing. If you are getting or have a new mac it will have osx 10.5 on it which is also named leopard. It already comes pre done with a software that is extremely user friendly and easy to use and install windows with on your mac. Its called bootcamp, it allows you to even partition a part on the hard drive you are already using for windows if you want. If I were you I would not put windows on any external. I only say this becuase if you install it on an external and your mac is set for duel boot and you happen to unplug your external while the mac starts up it could, I am not saying it will, cause some problems while it tries to find where the hdd went to boot windows. I would just keep it all on the same HDD. Just partition about 60 gigs for xp and fs. Its plenty of room. Save the rest for the mac. Bootcamp is amazing.. Just follow what it asks step by step.. So easy.. My grandma could do it. I hope all goes well for you!

i personally feel Mac makes good software but charges too much for the systems. theoretically Apple is in a monolopy just like microsoft is but in a different way. at least with a windows machine there is competition among manufactures so it keeps prices on the low. Apple on the otherhand is the only one to buy Mac's from which allows them to up the price a little bit, PC's have the better hardware, but i feel mac has the better software.

Mac is the best hardware out there in my opinion. Leopard (i think) comes with "Boot Camp" which is a dual booting utility. I did a config on a Mac that was 2 yrs old a few weeks ago, and loaded XP on to it. So as far as I know boot camp is still a part of the Leopard/iLife package.
As far as the HDDs go:
If you are going to have a 640 gb, then squeeze FS and XP on there. Externals are, in my opinion, only useful for office documents, pictures and archives... NOT to run applications off of, especially if you have a 640 gb hdd.

there is really no difference between Mac hardware and PC hardware, Mac just uses buffered memory while PC's use unbuffered, thats it from what i see.

Honestly the hardware is much much much better then in a pc. I have been repairing macs and pc's for a while now and trust me... there is a big difference. Most wouldnt understand what I am talking about if I did explain... But let me tell you a great example... XP, Vista, etc have all been benchmarked on a mac with the same specs as a pc and guess which one doubled the speed and reliability? Yup, the mac did! Its pretty sad that xp and vista run faster on non native hardware ha ha.
