I see many screenshots and videos on here from people who have a similar setup as I do and seem to be getting better performance. I have used NickN's guide on setting up fsx and nhancer and have followed them exactly. I am running low settings with a few at low/med (I am running with no other aircraft or traffic/no weather) and I get around 12-15 fps near airports and 20-25 at cruise. What do you think is the bottleneck here or does this performance seem right? Here is what I am running and my add-ons:
AMD 6000+ 3.0 ghz dual core
ECS 7050m-m (630a chipset)
PNY 9600gt
4g of OCZ DDR2 800
fsx on its own 120gb drive, samsung 7200rpm 8mb cache
vista premium 32bit (nothing else running in the background)
corsair 750w psu

If you are running 'Full Screen' or 'Minimized Full Screen' but fully expanded, try going to minimized full screen and drag the corner of the screen until there is a 1/2" space around the outside edges, so you can see a bit of your desktop around the edges. This is a quirk in FSX and my frame rates sky rockets with all sliders to the right when I run like this. Might work for you too.

It could be the fact fsx is on its own drive. I can't figure it ou though.

Having FSX on it's own drive wouldn't matter, in fact it would probably improve performance. This being said, the drive can't be an old IDE low RPM drive, otherwise whats the point lol. One of the newer 7200 RPM or faster Sata drives it should be fine.

part of the problem probably is the fact that you have so many addons running with FSX and ur CPU can keep up, my CPU is an AMD 5600 at 2.9ghz dual core, and its clocked out at 100% load, but my video card has a very small load. im eventually get a phenom II, and i recommend that you get a quad core as well to lighten the load a little.

John, from everything i have been reading, you will see no improvement from an increase in cores as fsx can only utilize 2. Anyone else know the details?

My apologies. For what it's worth, Phil Taylor had indicates that FSX will use more than 2 cores, but it is limited to texture loading rather than rendering, so YMMV.
Cheers!

So what do you guys think would be the best upgrade? I was thinking about either a new mobo/proc/mem, new video card, or a 10k rpm hard drive. I can only afford 1 though right now.

"What is holding my system back?"
Easy ... FSX itself
IMO you need more CPU power for FSX, if you stay the AMD way the Phenom II 940 seems to have it or you may want to wait for the Phenom II 955, check the avsim forums... you can overclock it more but either CPU you will have to buy a new mobo to use it.. with a 790FX/SB750 combination chipset recommended.
Regards

Hey Rob,
I have E8400 Dual Core with only a 256 MB card running (top end 256 card mind you). When I first got my new system FS9 ran like 50fps with all sliders maxed. Then the next week it was down to like 6fps. Nothing changed...
All I did was NOT play in full screen mode but have the screen still maximized. Bam... back to 50fps with maxed out sliders... Worked for me... Don't know what changed..

Robert - not sure if your motherboard will accomodate (mine just required a BIOS flash), but i recommend bumping up the processor if you can ... i had a 6000+ same as you (i have a 9800GT instead of a 9600GT), but i just installed a new Phenom II X4 940 and now FSX is very smooth!!! I used to have sliders at medium (20+FPS) ... can now pretty much max em out ... (30+FPS most places). Also seemed to get rid of any shimmering and blurries too ... FSX looks beautiful now. I was able to bump up Anti-aliasing and Anisotropic filtering on the video card side without a murmur.
You could put the 285GT in, but i think you'll find that FSX is more CPU bound than GPU bound - FSX certainly seems to take advantage of the 4 cores. As Luke says ... YMMV!
