Is anyone familiar with FS-GS, the company that actually talks you through setting up your computer to the best settings to get the most out of FS9 or FSX? I hear it's usually very worthwhile, but I'd like to know your opinion on whether it's worth the cost or not. http://www.fs-gs.com/

Wow ! You mean there is actually someone out there that charges you
to help set your settings for FS ? I didnt know that. I always
just made the adjustments myself and did this and that till I got it
to where I was happy with results. And of course I also
usually read over different forums to get ideas of what worked
for others. This is interesting ! Im surious to see if any one
has used them and how it worked for them.

I know someone who used their service, and claims that it worked wonders for him.

I too know someone who has used FS-GS. They say it's amazing, and strongly recommend it.

It is a good idea, and I once tried (started) but what I didn't like was the man running it - spoke to me like I was a third grader - and he couldn't take a hint - plus there are some fees involved. There are enough computer savvy folks here in DVA that can help you tweak your settings to get the most out of FSX and FS9. Not tooting my horn - but if you blast me an email, I'd be glad to help you out.

I've used FS-GS twice now; once for FS9 and once for FSX. The service was *amazing* with FS9 and the difference was simply night and day -- My machine certainly isn't "high end" and before the service, I'd be lucky to see 20-25 fps with my own "recommended" medium/high settings. After the FS-GS system unification process though, I can now run FS9 at 45 fps locked with all sliders maxed using payware aircraft, scenery, weather, etc. -- it doesn't matter! I was highly impressed to say the least.
About a year after the FS9 unification, I worked with them on tweaking FSX. To be honest, I was less impressed with the results I got with FSX, but it was still a pretty good accomplishment for a machine like mine to have most of the sliders maxed and still get 15-20 fps. However, going from the performance I'm used to with FS9, that wasn't enough for me to make the switch so I still have yet to make FSX my primary sim. I'm sure this is more to do with my hardware though than with the service itself and have heard of some people getting the same night/day before and after performance difference with FSX.
Michael, the guy who runs the service, is an "interesting" personality (as Andy found out), but he really knows his stuff. I, personally, didn't have any problems working with him and found him extremely knowledgeable when it came to getting the absolute most out of your system (not just FS).
So, with all of that said and based on my experience, I would *highly* recommend the service for FS9... For FSX, well, maybe wait a bit longer until the machines are more powerful and more can be squeezed out of them, but it still isn't a bad investment -- and besides, at $80 (or whatever the cost these days), it's WAY cheaper than a new video card, processor or RAM and it will probably give you better results.

I would like to thank Andy Kaufmann for helping me with my FS9 computer problem. He figured out why I was getting the stutters and pointed me in the right direction to fix it. Thanks Andy!

Ok, I broke down and gave Michael a shout, long story short, got 30% FPS improvement (20 min call) , by pulling one of my sticks of memory, so happens my configuration of the memory was flawed and caused conflicts, now I run with less memory and performance jumped, this guy knows what he is doing. I am going to go the distance and upgrade per his recommendations, should be interesting . . . but I believe it wll be well worth the $$.

Daniel,
Faulty RAM isnt the only cause of memory perfomance issues.
Modern motherboards have dual channel memory controllers (except I7 which has triple channel). To get the best perfomance you install memory in pairs, one stick for each of the channels.
If you then go and install an additional single stick you ruin the memory bandwidth as the controller can no longer operate in dual channel mode.
Further to this, installing 4x1gig sticks will give you worse performance than installing 2x2gig sticks.
So faulty RAM isnt always the reason for poor memory perfomance, not understanding the memory technology is often more likely to be the culprit.
