Is there an advantage to using the max FPS on FS9? And if so what is the optimal max?
If I leave it on unlimited what are the negatives and positives?
Thanks
On unlimited I normally get about 70 fps with all sliders maxed out, except going into LGA at night get about 45 fps.

Depending on the speed of your system for both processing and graphics locking your FPS to lets say 30FPS can help the FS engine run more efficiently and load textures and scenery quicker and run much smoother. The optimal max is the maximum frame rate you can achieve while running the most amount of complex graphics (Virtual Traffic, Terrain, Weather, Addon Scenery/Textures/Lighting/Aircraft, etc..).
From FPS that you are getting it does not seem that your system has these issues and can run unlimited FPS.
Some extra info on FPS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate

Hmm reading through the wiki shows that the monitor refresh rate is what can limit the FPS. If your monitor is at 60hz (like most are) it can only show 60 fps. Something to think about.

Motion pictures run about 28fps I think, in my opinion, anything over 30 is just a waste of processor time.

Scott, even lower. lol The average motion picture movie is from 20-26 frames. Some of the new ones are going to be in the 30's, though.
I'll try and find the article, but they think it is a waste of money. They say that humans couldn't see the difference with their naked eye. Just goes to show.
I think 80 still comes with bragging rights, though. I'm not there though.

Anything above 30 or 35 FPS in Flight Sim is useless.
HOWEVER, I have my frames set to Unlimited, because this way my frames are MUCH better than if I lock them at X number of FPS.
With frames unlimited, on the ground, payware with weather and some traffic, I can get up to 20 or even 30 sometimes. If I try to lock them at 20 in the same conditions, my frames won't go higher than 15 or 14. Weird

David, this is how FS works
UNLIMITED: You get what it can give
LIMITED/LOCKED: The computer will try its absolute hardest to match that setting, which means it takes a huge chunk of processor and RAM when loading sceneries etc.

I find having FPS set to unlimited in both FSX and FS9 give me better performance, this way I'll idle at around 60, and if suddenly I fly into an area like KJFK, I have some room for it to studder. For example if a flock of birds goes in front of me in FSX, my FPS can drop 30 frames for a moment without me noticing before it can run stable again.

I keep mine limited at 35, gives me a buffer, but it is worthless to go above that, as stated before me. Your eyes cannot see it, and your comp will strain to max out and possibly shorten the lifespan of certain parts.

Mines locked at 35 but the past couple days I've been getting 6.5 FPS with the settings on Medium Low. I don't know what I can do to make it better, it's been unbearable. I did a flight last night from Vancouver BC to Houston and by the time I was ready to land it was at like 4. ugh.

Scott and Ruben, EVEN LOWER! I was curious so I asked my dad (he is an engineer, has worked in the photo industry his whole life) and he said that average id 16fps. The average person can't exactly tell much of a difference on any higher numbers.
And that stinks for me my comp was amazing when it ran XP, but then it crashed and the recovery disks that came with it were Vista. plus if you add that my absolute obsession with the visuals, I'm running about 10fps when I do my FSEconomy flying in SE Alaska... I haven't done a flight for DVA in a while so i don't remember the numbers, but I do turn my settings down when I fly commercial planes
