I've had my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop for about a year and a half now with no troubles at all. I just moved out of my place and am currently staying at a friend's house for a couple weeks before moving into my new place. I was able to connect to their network and internet just fine for the first couple days, but now it says I am connected to their network but Local only.. no internet. I go to diagnose the problem and it says "Cannot communicate with Primary DNS server", then has an IP address in (). I've tried running the "Reset the network adapter 'Wireless Network Connection'" option but it doesn't help. Running Vista.

Have you tried to release and renew the IP address via the command prompt?
Start > CMD in the search box on the bottom > ipconfig/ release "enter" > ipconfig /renew "enter"
When it comes back with a new IP, what is the IP that it gets

I type in ipconfig/ relase and it says :Error: unrecognized or incomplete command line" then lists more options, with "renew" is one so I went ahead and tried it. With /renew I get "No operation can be performed on Local Area connection while it has its media disconnected" and then some IP Adressees for IPv4 Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway. Not sure what media is disconnected...

media disconnected is saying that its not connecting to your wireless network. I would try restarting the laptop, then going in a deleting the wireless network profile from the computer. So when you try to join the network again, it will be like it has never joined it before, and ask you for certain information again. Something might have just got corrupt.

Tom, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me. However, my computer literacy has taken a turn for the worse and I can't figure out how to delete the wireless network profile from my computer!

Dean, not insulting your intelligence, but you need to spell RELEASE correctly, or it won't work...up above you have it ipconfig/RELASE - just checking.

Andy, at this point I wouldn't mind you insulting my intelligence if it got this thing to work correctly! I spelled it correctly when I did it though. I'm at my alma mater's library (it feels good to say that now that I finally graduated) and the internet is working just fine! When I get back to the place I'm crashing at I'll give it another go just for good measure.

Have you tried a simple SYSTEM RESTORE to when you had it running correctly at home? Sometimes that is all it takes.

Dean, this may be a stupid question but did you put
ipconfig/release
instead of...
ipconfig/ release
as you put in your message
Thanks,

I do not think grabbing the IP is the problem anymore, unless its an issue with his router at his house. I think maybe its a corrupt profile issue where it just needs to be reset.

possibly.
Simply, try resetting everything. Router, Laptop, Cycle your laptops wireless etc.
Also, when your router loads, open the settings and make sure it is set to visible, has the correct SSID and the password is set correctly

I've had the same problem at my house. Try unplugging the router for about a minute and then plug back in. Worked for me. I guess the router just needs to be recycled.
