So Ive decided to turn from the dark side and make the switch to a Mac. I know that im getting the macbook pro based on several references to its abilities. Here are the specs.
15.4 inch 2.53 ghz
Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB memory
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
The hard drive is where im seeking advice from anyone who would know
the options are
250 GB @5400 rpm - standard
320 GB @5400 rpm - +$45 more
320 GB @7200 rpm - +$90 more
500 GB @5400 rpm - +$135 more
Which of these is the best option for fs9 with some addon a/c and sceneries. Is there a huge difference with the higher rpms? Is it better to have more GB and lower rpms or less GB with more rpms?
I dont really want to add $135 to the price of this system if i can help it, but will if it makes that big of a difference
. Just looking for input from the more experienced
Thanks
Grant

4GB memory or RAM
Grant I am not sure how much you are going to be using the Mac for FS but if it seems like you will be using it A Lot in the Long run it would be best for the 500. It goes like this Its better to get it and not need it then need it and not have it.

i'd say go for the 320GB hdd @7200RPM. it'll be faster, and I really don't think you would need more storage space than that. I have a 160GB hdd in my new machine and I haven't even used half of it yet. You might want to ask Apple if they can replace the hdd for you down the road if you really need more storage space.

RPMs is almost everything in disk performance. It's a rotating surface, so the faster it rotates, the faster it can seek and transfer data.
Cheers!

While I agree 320 gb is enough, I wouldn't go smaller because you're going to have to Boot Camp your mac and basically split it in two. That'll give you 2 160 gb computers - one for windows (install XP!!) and one for OS10.5.
If you can afford the next step up on the 15 inch line, I'd do it as it has a better graphics card in addition to the mobile one (which has been underclocked for battery performance) and it's a little faster on the processing side.
Enjoy - I've used a Mac since I went to college, and while I've subsequently built a separate FS computer, I've really loved it for work. But I'll try not to start a "Mac vs PC war," since obviously I see the pluses in both.

go with the faster drive.
while bootcamp does 'partition' your hdd, it doesn't mean it is split in half [unless you have some really primitive software]. i partition all my harddrives on my windows boxes. usually no more than 80gb for the OS and games, the other 500+gb is storage and backup. with bootcamp you should be able to do the same, and you shouldn't need more than 100gb to run XP and all your games of software that OSX fails to run.

Sure, you can obviously control the size of the partition, but from a Windows perspective, it is a hard partition, i.e. without software like MacDrive, your windows OS can't see anything on the OS side, and thus you essentially have to plan on splitting your resources between the two in a semi permanent fashion. It's not like parallels where you can set it to be a flexible partition that can be easily crossed.

Grant, I use the 320GB @7200 in my MacBook Pro I bought in June '08. I love it. Hard drive grabs what it needs quickly and efficiently, I recently ran out of HDD space, but I just picked up an fairly inexpensive Western Digital MyBook 1TB external.
Welcome to the Dark Side

I read all the threads that you and Ryan talked about it. I was already leaning towards a MBP but wanted to see how fs would run on one. You guys definately helped convince me that this was the way to go.
