What kind of problems are you having? I run AutoCad on a Toshiba Satellite laptop with T6400x2 processor, 4 GB ram, Vista 64 with no problems.

You can get HD4870s with 1Gb of memory for $130 on Newegg.
It has no problems with FSX whatsoever.

Well, you are kind of in a bad situation. FSX is very CPU dependant, and I believe your CPU will struggle to run it, as will your video card. If you were going to upgrade your processor, I'd reccomend an Intel because even their lower end models can run FSX with respectable FPS. However, this would involve getting new a new motherboard. You also probably need more RAM and a new video card. The best option would probably be to wait until you have about $400-$500, and then upgrade your motherboard, CPU, video card and RAM.

I'm not sure. Truthfully, I am not that experienced with AMD processors.
Here's what I would do, though.
1) Buy/install Windows XP, because it does not hog system resources like Vista does.
2) Fly a few flights, tweak the settings, search Goggle for little tricks to improve your FPS, etc... See how much you can get out of your system.
3) If you are still not happy with the FPS, run a few more flights with the task manager open, and check your CPU usage and your RAM (memory) usage.
4) If one (or both) of these are maxed out during the flight, start looking for replacements. If you need any help, don't be afraid to ask. I'm sure I (and many other DVA members) would be happy to help.
Best of luck!

There are two ways it has to fit - it has to be short enough to fit in your case and you motherboard must have the correct slot for the card.
Your motherboard has 1 PCIe x16 card slot (the card is PCIe x16 2.0; it will work, albeit a little slower than if the slot was x16 2.0), so there are no problems there.
The only way to figure out if the card will fit in your case it to measure it. The card itself is 10 inches long and 8 inches wide. So the distance between the back of the case and the hard drives (or whatever is behind the PCI slot) should be greater than 10 inches, the distance between the motherboard and the side of the case should be greater than 8 inches.
If you already have Vista, installing XP will require a "clean" installation, which will erase all of your data. You would have to back up all of the stuff you wanted to save to another hard drive, a CD, a flash drive, etc... One thing you could do is create a partition on your HDD and move all of the stuff you wanted to save to it. Then, when you reformat the other partition and install the OS, you will still have all of your saved planes, etc...
