In a recent article in PC Pilot it was stated that FSX utilized a dual core better than a quad core. My flight sim of choice right now is FS9. My question is this with the I7 chip out of my price range, I was looking at the Intel E8400 Core Duo. And my second Question is the video card, which would be better ATI 4870 or the Nvidia 9800 GTX. PC Pilot also stated that FSX and it didn't mention FS9 does not support SLI or Crossfire is that true. Any comments would be appreciated.

I would suggest the E8500. As it is the CPU I have, once you obtain it make sure you have a good HSF on it or else you will experience stutters. Also get one with E0 stepping as those run cooler.
As for Graphics card. I would go for an Nvidia. I have the HD4870 it's an ok card and can get you 75FPS in both FS9 and FSX although it doesn't have as much graphical settings like the NVIDIA cards.
The ATI HD4870 also runs hot and for that you will need to increase the fan speed, which makes noise.
One more thing is that ATI has put in a new function called Powerplay, this is something I really disliked. Powerplay reduces your core clock from 750MHz to 500MHz and rarely goes back up when flying on FS. You will experience stutters unless you can tweak it to get it back to the 750MHz core clock.
There is many stuttering topics about ATI video cards. If I could I'd go back to NVIDIA but I'm stuck with my ATI HD4870 for the time being.

Nvidia > ATI EVERY SINGLE TIME for ANY FLIGHT SIM. FSX or FS9 CANNOT support SLI, or Crossfire for that matter, so buying 2+ cards is useless. And yes, go with the dual core and overclock it.

Thanx for your input guys. Since you can't SLI, would the 9800 be good or should into GTS or GTX series

A 9800 is fine, remember, it's mostly dependant on your CPU.

Yeah CPU power is the main thing.
My old PC was an HP Geforce FX5500 and a Intel Celeron D processor @ 2.98GHz
I was able to get 60FPS after much tweaking under low-med settings.
So your new PC will surely be fine for the job. I now have an E8500 and ATI HD4870 as stated above.

You might want to get a 64-Bit OS to take advantage of the 4GB.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium x64.
Well everything else looks good. What about your sound card?
You are sure to be able to get 75FPS as well. Very similiar system to mine.

I was planing on headphones just for the fact that everytime I start the sim the dog freaks out. And this only started after I started flying the 757, go figure. So I was going with the onboard sound for now. And has Vista given you any problems read alot about that was thinking of Windows 7 when that comes out but I'm so used to XP.
