ok so in my current rig i have a beefy AMD proc.. 4 gigs of FAST ram.. it is a real good machine.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750 Kuma 2.7GHz Socket AM2+ 95W Dual-Core black edition
Patriot Viper 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
I do have a Matrox TRiplehead 2 go with 4 19 inch LCDs hooked to it. so my resolution is like 3500x1024 or something.
anyhow.. if you look at my PIREPS it says average frame rate (thanks Luke cool report mod) is like 57-65 FPS
but i am here to tell you.. around FREEWARE airports.. like KMSN (smallish) I am getting 20-30
i feel like I am missing something.. i should be gettin rock solid numbers?
so right now i have a
8800GT -256 meg card.
now I am thinking the problem I am having is video ram related. 256 meg.. close to the ground and you loading lots of stuff.. maybe a gig and a little faster card would help?
will I be able to get 60 fps (SMOOTHNESS!) on the ground with a card like this?
SAPPHIRE 100258-1GHDMI Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP
119 bucks.. and I am THINKING it should be cool no?

John could you explain what your settings are to get these kind of frame rates? I am using an 8800Ultra with a machine of similar specs except on the intel side and I don't get anywhere near even 60fps. So just curious what have you done with the software to get those kinds of frame rates. Is this FS2004 or FSX?

DO NOT! Use an ATI card for FS, definitely go Nvidia. If you're going to upgrade, upgrade to a 280 from Nvidia or something along the likes. ALSO, the human eye can't tell the difference between 60 and 25 FPS, so don't gripe.

If you are getting anything more than 25 or 30 FPS I wouldnt touch it. Like Nic said, you cant tell the difference after 30. Seriously, I am running fs on a lap top and the hard drive is full, and my frame rates suck, so I would love to have what you are getting.

Thing is I want butter smooth landings. I think I paid enough for it and should expect better.. and as for the The eye cant detect more than 30 fps.. i dunno.. I can DEFINATELY see the slideshow.
I have SATA hard drives too so it aint that.
SOMETHING is wrong.
I can make the numbers go up categorically by turning something off. (I havent figured out what it is yet because I turn off a bunch of stuff before flying.)

http://www.100fps.com/how_many_frames_can_humans_see.htm
How many frames per second can the human eye see?
This is a tricky question. And much confusion about it is related to the fact, that this question is NOT the same as:
How many frames per second do I have to have to make motions look fluid?
And it's not the same as
How many frames per second makes the movie stop flickering?
And it's not the same as
What is the shortest frame a human eye would notice?

I guess we are clouding the issue I am asking a specific question I am getting 120+ frames in the sky..
I am getting 20-30 on the ground..
I am wondering if video memory has anything to do with the disparity.
closer to the ground you are drawing more stuff.. more textures
does more textures equal more video memory needed?
If I quadruple the amount of video ram will that increase on ground performance?

John, we're referring to FS. If you have 100000000000000000FPS in flight sim, you wouldn't notice a difference if you had 30.

Well I sat around for about an hour today and I started by turning all my FSX settings to the lowest settings possible. Which of course looked like crap and took my frame rates sky high. I then started to add stuff in one tab at a time to see the effects that each thing had and how much of a performance hit compared to how much better it made things look. Well going through the process I was able to get my frame rates on the ground at LAX from around 13 to around 25 and I feel it looks the same.
I am just trying to understand how I generally have the same hardware as John, except for a more powerful graphics card and he is getting crazy frames and I am getting something below that. I am not complaining because I think 25 of so FPS looks good, just trying to understand where he is getting that. The only way I was able to get 40+ FPS on the ground was to make the scenery disappear.

Tom I will post my settings this week when I am at the gaming rig. Nothing special.. I think it might be something to do with anti aliasing..
dont forget I have a triple head to go that puts my cockpit on THREE screens which is supposed to have even MORE impact..
oh wait..
lol..
I dont use FSX.. I use FS2004.
big difference.. and yes FSX stinks for me too.. and I have a great rig or so I thought
I am just wondering DOES video ram make a difference offloading textures with MORE ram available?
I gotta think it does..
but I have NO idea.

I ABSOLUTELY recommend ATI cards. (Don't you love the over the top, blanket DO NOT USE staements...to each their own) I have used them in FS9 and FSX for years and NEVER had a problem. I currently run the Sapphire ATI HD4870 with 512 GDR3 ram and turn flight averages 60+ with every thing maxed. Running unlimited I will hit 180+ at cruise - not that you can see a difference between anything above about 30. Even around big airports I turn 30-40 on the ground. ATIs are a great match to the AMD family.
My other system Specs:
AMD Phenom II 950 Quad Core
4 GB GSkill DDR3, 1066 MHz Ram
Dual 500 GB SATA 7200 RPM HDs
700W power supply
Gigabyte GA-MA790X - UDA4 board
John, listen to your boss, if you get the ATI HD 4850, 1GB , you will not be disappointed.
