Vergil,
Sorry but I missed your email. Here is what I do.
Create a Transfer folder...name it what ever works for you.
Go thru each folder on your system. If there are files you want, create a relevant named folder UNDER your transfers folder. Copy the file into that folder. Once you have everything you want copied into your transfer folder, either write it to a removable (external) hard drive or, if you have to, burn it to DVD.
Move the drive/DVD to your new computer and copy them to where you want them to be.
Remember, you cannot "moved" installed - i.e. payware - software. You have to reinstall it from the original source files/CD/DVD on to your new PC. Uninstall it first. That way any registration data will be reset. What I mean is this. Example, Cloud 9 keeps tract of how many times and what computers their software is installed on. Too many installs or too many different PCs and your license gets black listed.
Hope this helps.
Rob

Vergil,
I think FAST is going to be your best bet. The USMT is designed more or less to be used in a netowrk environment as you have to have multiple folders stored on a server that you can read/write to/from. FAST is a wizard interface and all you have to do is follow the directions on the screen. You can transfer virtually and setting from the old system to the new one, as well as specify any file type, or file locations to include in the transfer. Once the wizard collects all of the info it needs from you, it'll do the rest of the work by itself. You can use removable media such as a CD or DVD to burn the data from the wizard.
The location is Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
Once you have the disc with the data from the old system, run the same utility on the new system (from the same location), and specify that this is the new computer. Insert the disc and follow the directions on screen. It's very simple to use and you can be sure to get everything in one pass rather than going old school and copying each and every individual file manually to make a disc. You also cannot export system settings by doing the old school way, either. The only way to get the settings completely transferred intact is to use either FAST or USMT. The FAST ultility ships with both XP Home and Pro versions so you don't have to install anything to use it as long as you're running the same OS on both old and new systems.
I use this quite often at work so if you need help with it, feel free to give me a shout and I'll get you fixed up.
