I guess they'll use the DC-9s for a little while longer.
At the moment, opperating the DC-9s for a little bit longer is less expensive than replacing them with new aircraft. Once the opperation cost has a chance to become higher overall, I think they'll replace them.
I think the 742s might have a bit more time left in them yet, aswell.

The DC9's are still cost efficient, for the time being. They may not be as fuel efficient, but that is not the only cost involved with operating an aircraft.
These DC9's are completely paid for, meaning no payments. Whenever the cost of buying a new replacement aircraft is equal to the cost of flying the DC9, then they will retire them.
New Aircraft Costs:
-Existing Crew to be trained on new equipment
-Payments
-Paint
-Maintenance
-Fuel
-Crew
DC9:
-Fuel
-Paint (The remainder of the fleet to be painted to NNC)
-Maintenance and parts
-Fuel
-Crew
Whenever the cost advantage of having no payments is outweighed by the need for more fuel efficiency, then you will see a transition.

I'm sure those DC9 pilots would LOVE being either a) downgraded to Regional Jets (and contracts sold to SKW or ASQ), or b) being furloughed or even fired and letting SkyWest and ASA take over their jobs with lower pay.
It's not like the DC9 pilots can get jobs at other airlines, none are hiring!

This is an old discussion and was brought up when the merger was announced. The CRJ9 can not replace a DC-9 on most of NW routes, unless they plan on increasing frequencies to make up for the loss of capacity. The CRJ9 only has 74 seats. The DC9-30's have 100 seats. The DC9-30's and DC9-40's could be replaced with E190's or B717's, which are the few aircraft comparable in size (~105-110 seats). The 125 seat DC9-50's could be replaced with A318's, B736's, or even E195's.

You would be more likely to see E-175s replacing the DC-9s than CRJ-900s. But it is great to see a classic airliner still flying. NW is the only major airline still flying them (unless you count MD-80s and the B717).

Considering that the 717 is a DC-9-30 with new engines and a glass cockpit, it would probably be the best trade off. Unfortunately, 717's are no longer readily available. AirTran 717's seat 117. 12 in business and 105 in coach. This shuts the the CRJ-900 and E-170 out with seating for 70-80 respectively. The E-190 only sits between 100-110 depending on airline configuration. The best fits would be the B736/73G, or A319/320. I personally don't believe that DL has any intentions of phasing the DC-9 out any time soon since they a dropping around $200k a pop to repaint those birds.

Last I heard, 742F are no longer in service and the 742 are charter. I don't think they're repainting them tho. Haha I love the little saab. that things a blast to fly! they've already replaced one of our daily DC9s at GFK with a CRJ-900. Of course they are only being moved elsewhere during the merge. They have been continuously brining more and more of those diesel 9s from storage which is awesome to see

i dont think that 200k is much of a cost to a airline as large as delta, also considering a comercial jet costs well over $50 mil. i dont think the dc 9 will last 5 years in the mainline fleet.

The Diesel-9s are flying around for the same reason I still drive a 1996 Dodge pickup with 166,000 miles on it. Yeah, it's beaten up and banged up and gets 16 mpg downhill with a tailwind, but the sucker's paid for.
I don't know if the DC-9 maintenance costs per flight hour are higher than a newer aircraft; I imagine they are, and the fuel cost definitely is, but that's got to be factored against the millions of dollars to lease a new(er) aircraft...and finding newer aircraft in the first place. How far ahead is Boeing's 737NG production line booked right now? The beancounters in Atlanta have to figure all that in. At some point in the future the balance will tip and it will make economic sense to actually replace the -9s with newer mainline aircraft, or possibly downgrade some of the routes to regional and use the bigger ERJs or CRJs. I don't see them ditching the -9s for several years, at least until Northwest's operations are fully integrated with Delta's and they have some solid post-merger data to look at.

I would think that Delta's front office is already looking at replacing the -9s with possibly either E-195s or 736s. Because of how far down the road it will be before any new aircraft orders are delivered, they've got to think about replacing them now. Even though it may be several years before they're actually retired.

Yeah, we do have an agreement with Delta for that, but Delta only gets a set amount of total early del. spots. Thats why Delta was able to get 772LRs so quickly. Its realy just a question of whether or not Delta want to use some of thier remianing early delivery slots for small a/c like the 736 or not.
