I was flying on FS9 and I was getting frustrated with my low frame rate over my MegaScenery Manhattan. I was getting about 6 or 7 frames per second. So, I turned off the sound just because I was getting tired of hearing the constant pausing of the engines. Then, my frame rate increased by about 15-30 frames. So, turning off your sound while on takeoff and/or landing is a very good idea if you are experiencing some frame rate issues. About 95% of the time will your frame rate remain fairly high and allow you to takeoff and/or land with no lagging.

I had the same issue but when I upgraded to the Soundblaster X-FI the frame rate went up Beyond what it was with the sound simply turned off! Apparently it offloads from the CPU most of the sound tasks
In addition the sound is MUCH more realistic

Yeah, at altitude, you can put on the sound whatever you want to and it will run pretty smooth. It's just when you get below 10K feet do you begin to notice a change in frame rate.

There too. Especially with that BIG payware scenery package. I forgot who made it, but it is takes a big toll on your frame rate.

I haven't noticed that much difference between using high quality vs. low quality sound (to my ear). Is it just me or do you NOT notice the audio difference in low quality?

Only problem w/ muting the sound on landing is you can't hear the GPWS, but if you can get over that I guess it's a good idea

Just hit Q and you will see a message in the corner of the screen saying "Sound Off." Then, you should notice a change in frame rate.

One or two other ways will also increase frame rates. In windowed mode, select auto hide for the task bar and your frames rates will improve between 10 and 20 frames per second, and for FS9, right click on menu bar and select hide, and FSX press and hold the Alt key for about 2 seconds and that will hide the menu bar, both of which will improve your windowed mode and increase frame rates by about 5 fps.
