I was wondering how that is working out for you as that is the combo I want to run.

I run a i7 920 overclocked just a little to 3Ghz. I use a Giga-Byte motherboard (love them, very stable & easy to use) with 6 gigs of RAM. My video card is a 9800 GTX+ 512MB.
I have great success with FSX. I run all my settings nearly maxed out (except for traffic) and have never encountered frame rates which would make the sim unplayable.

Wow almost the same setup as myself, only difference is my board is an ASUS and the card is an HD4870 2GB. Also like that last comment, everything runs smooth.

The only suggestion I'd make is to seriously examine the i5 before you purchase an i7. You may find that it gives you the performance you need at a better price point.
Cheers!

Like Weston suggested, you can boot into BIOS and change parameters around. Gigabyte motherboards come with an OCing utility you can install. That's what I used. A few clicks of the mouse and a restart of the computer and I was good to go.

These new processors that intel released are a different socket type too....kind of disappointing. I don't understand why they did that. But, this change should make the current 1366 cpu's and motherboards cheaper.

The 1366 i7s (920, 950, 975) overclock better, and when overclocked, they perform better than the i5s and i7 860/870.
Go for the i7 920 if:
1) You plan on overclocking
2) You want to run two or more cards in SLI or Crossfire
3) You run programs that benefit from triple channel RAM
4) You want to continue to buy Enthusiast chips (1156 will become more mainstream, while 1366 will continue to get the top-of-the-line CPUs)
Personally, I'll be going i7 920/Evga X58/6GB Dominator RAM in a month or so.

Hopefully you guys don't waste money on 2 + cards if you ONLY plan on using FS, because nor FS9 or FSX is written to take advantage of more than 1 card.

Nick, rumor has it that in a new service pack for FSX will take advantage of Crossfire/SLI.

Interesting, I wonder how long that will take and if it actually will take advantage of that.
I could see it now - i7 overclocked to 4.0Ghz, 12GB RAM, 4 GTX 300's (they'd be out by then), getting 150 FPS on the ground at FSDT JFK with Manhattan X, GEX, UTX, REX at 4820 x 4820 resolution, CS 757 VC.

Adam, what board are you running? How does it overclock? I'm looking at the Classified and the X58 LE at the moment.

"A new service pack for FSX? I thought Microsoft got rid of the Flight Sim team? " Yeah I thought Microsoft was totally done with Flightsim, why would there be a service pack?
