Here we go:
You may have read my post in one of Joe's threads the other day - but the background is that I have no Idea what happened to FSX - just stopped - so I went and did an uninstall (not Add/Remove) and put in my FSX Deluxe disk and got the following error:
"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package. D:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X.msi"
Well that's a doozy! It's a valid Windows package alright...and the files are on the DVD...pretty much done everything I know how to do, including registry cleaning, etc. Even tried here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928080
Last night I went through, very painfully I might add, the entire registry and deleted all relations to FSX (thanks Anthony). Rebooted and inserted the DVD - and again, same error. Went to MS again and found that there may be an issue with Windows Installer - so I ran that program - and got the error again. So, reformatted the drive that housed FSX. Then ran through the registry again to make sure there was nothing at all that had anything to do with FSX on the system - not just the drive. Rebooted and tried again - and this time I received the message in the picture above.
FS9 and everything is running fine. I tried installing the Demo yesterday - and that worked - I could fly it. I've tried the Standard DVDs and the Deluxe version....any help would be greatly appreciated...I have done an exhaustive search through anything I can find - but lead me - anyone!
And if anyone can discipher the characters in the pic - that would be helpful as well!
Thanks

Andy had a problem similiar to this where also my Microsoft Flight Simulator X.msi could not be veriyfied. What I did, and it solved my problem was this.
I put my fsx deluxe disk 1 into my computer. I browsed to "My Computer" and then right clicked on the cd drive and hit explore. I then copied the .msi into a new folder on my desk top, after it copied to the folder I named the folder "installer" and placed the folder in my C:\Windows\ path. It asked me do I want to merge two files(the old and the new installer folder) I selected yes. Then my problem was solved! Again though my problem was also a little bit diffreant but involved the .msi error.
P.S. Hope this helps and is clear.

Andrew, stick in your Windows Installation CD and boot to it. Then try to "REPAIR" Windows. I would backup any important documents beforehand though.

Nope nothing worked - so this weekend, I'm doing a full format on all the drives, start with a fresh install of FS9 first with all my addons and then move over to FSX and the addons for it...so I figure that will take me a good 2 days easily, and them even before I play - I'm running a complete backup image with ACRONIS on my brand new 2TB external drive

Andy,
I tried some google around for your issue, but could not find a ready made solution. I am sure you would have done enough of that before posting this thread, so I did not spend too much time repeating that.
Uninstalling or deleting FSX install folder will not help as the program references are stored inside the registry and are most of the times not as simple as doing a "Find Next / F3" for the program name. References are usually long and cryptic and doing it without a automated uninstaller might not be worth it. You will spend far too much time with no guarantee of results.
I understand your situation, and right now is a system up and running. The following is what I recommend:
1. Try using "Windows Install Clean up". This program is superb, by Microsoft, and has been my savior in the most extreme and stubborn circumstances. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301)
2. Make sure that your temp files are cleaned up at each install attempt. Seems silly telling a veteran like you that, but sometimes it happens, especially when we are tired and have tried multiple time without success. Try cccleaner. Nice little utility and has a "Windows Registry Integrity" checker that finds and delete orphan references.
3. Copy the installer (and related install files) into your local file system rather than from the DVD. I have had many cases in which it did the trick. Usually the reason is that installer tries to create / update / modify some files, unfortunately on the same drive. With hard disks it works. With DVD write permissions are 'read-only' it becomes a issue. Also make sure that you mo dify the permissions of the install and use "unblock" since the installer is a exe file from a external source and if you have latest MS patches, there is a possibility that Windows permissions have blocked it. This might not be the case a year back when these patches might not have been released.
4. Do not run multiple versions of MSFS on the same computer. If this is not possible, at least install them on different drives and in dissimilar directories.
5. If nothing works, sorry, you might have to go for a complete system reinstall. It's OK to spend 2 hours doing the system and the drivers rather than spend 2 days or more with a inoperable system.

Andy,
See if this helps. (http://www.appdeploy.com/msierrors/detail.asp?id=26).
What the article suggests that your Windows installer might have gone corrupt (or as I interpret might be different (newer) version than FSX expects). It gives you the steps to delete that.
You might need to remove all references of Windows Installer (using the article) and install a new one. Just make sure to be of the same version that FSX is compatible with.
Try this and see if works.

And what if you say NO.
FSX installer will be making some log files (in the install folder or in "Documents and Settings". Can you explore that and see if it leads somewhere.

Andy not sure if this might help but when was the last update from MS posted? have you tried to rn Windows restore at least up to the time all this happened.
Had a similar but very unlikely event a couple of months ago with Vista... Ended having to manually remove FSX, along with where all the extra goodies were stored at as well

Windows is running fine - I've tried running repair, restore, reuse, re-invent, rietterate, all the RE's I can find! lol....I've removed FSX, that's the kicker.
