Well I'll just start out, here's my current specs:
AMD Phenom II 940 @ 4.0GHz
GIGABYTE UD4P DDR2 mobo
4GB (2x2gb) G-Skill DDR2 1066MHz
1x Western Digital 7200RPM 80Gb SATA HDD
1x Western Digital 7200RPM 640Gb SATA HDD
ATI Sapphire 4890 @ 1.0GHz
Corsair TX750W PSU
Modded Coolermaster 699 Case
Pioneer DVD/CD R/W 5.25" drive
XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler
2x Logysis 12" Red Cold Cathode lights
1x Red LED 120mm fan rear exhaust
2x Black 120mm fans top exhaust
1x RED LED 120mm fan front intake
1x Black 120mm fan front intake
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
I was browsing through Core i7 prices, and how much it would cost to build an i7 system and got really tempted to upgrade. I realized I had spent about $1050 on the guts of this system a couple of months ago, and probably 35 on more fans and cathodes and what not. Probably 50 bucks modding it (getting drill bits, paint etc..), it's inside is painted flat black, original material was sanded and primered before the black coats went on, so the paint is done correctly, I've cut cable managment holes inside the case, all have edge molding around them so they don't look like they were done like sh*t, I cut a custom window on the side panel, and the panel has edge molding around it as well, and finally I have 2 12" red cathodes in the case with 5 red 120mm fans (that I bought seprately). So I figured if I could sell it for around $1200 (+-$50) locally (I know people that would probably be willing to spend that much on it), or on craigslist etc.., I could upgrade to an i7 920 system. So I was on newegg and thew this list together
Core i7 920
Gigabyte UD3R mobo
6gb (3x2) G-Skill DDR3 1600
Western Digital Cavair Black 1TB 7200RPM
EVGA GTX 275 superclocked
Corsair TX750W
Antec 1200
Scythe Mugen 2
Samsung DVD R/W 22x
Well that list turned out to be around $1250 with MIR's. So if I can sell my current system for around $1150 or more, that would just be $100 bucks out of my pocket for the upgrade. (and I'm willing to spend around $200 or so). So what do you all think? Should I try to sell my current system and go for that one, wait for price drops/new hardware etc.. I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks!!
Weston

I think your having a really good dream. If you have a system that you want to sell for $1150...and you, or anyone else can build one in your specs for 1250...why on earth would they buy a used one? Just curious...why don't you use some of the componants out of your old one? You can always make a good networked one that you can use to run your peripherals.

Because AMD is pushing out new Phenom II's like crazy, so the longer I wait if I decide to sell my system, the less money I will be able to get for it. Also, I'm still using DDR2 on this system, and even if I did upgrade to a DDR3 board and DDR3 RAM, it would be around 230 bucks for the board and ram. And it's still just dual channel DDR3 at that. Whereas Intel is pushing out i7's alot slower, and if I do upgrade to that system and 150 bucks out of pocket, I would get a slightly faster CPU, DDR3 Triple Channel, much more room for expansion, and it would still be top of the line for a bit longer than the current system will be for only around 150 bucks out of pocket. Thats why

Andy, the system is about 2 months old and has light use. I've spent about $1100 on everything, and thats not including mods. See, here in KY, theres not as many tech savey people (lol), so like I said I could probably get around 1200, give or take 50 or so (and I DO know some people that would buy this system from me for around that much). If I take the components out of this one, I wouldn't be able to sell it as much, so thats why it will get sold in 1 piece lol

Weston, this is a tough decision. Like you said, AMD is pushing Phenom II's out like a factory. I was thinking initially wait for the GTX 300 from Nvidia, but I realized two things. It'd be hyper expensive compared to the 275 superclocked you want. Also, by time you wait for the 300, more Phenom II's would have come out dropping the worth of your system now.
My suggestion to you is to sell your system as planned, get the i7 system and overlock it to around 4.0Ghz like you have with your Phenom and this will give you increased performance. Then...................... get FSX :D.

Exactly. Thats why I don't know if I should or not. Cus the longer I wait to sell, the less money I will be able to get for it. Also, another thing to look at, is that the X58 chipset is getting kind of old, and another may come out in the near future..

Very true, but you must also look at it this way. If you're going to continue running FS9, what you have now is overkill, updating would be even more! If you try FSX, then updating wouldn't be a bad idea. What you have now, AND what you plan to upgrade to will be top of the line for a while coming, so it's truly a tough decision.

Computers and computer parts hold no value on the after market. They hold no where near retail value even after only been used a few weeks. You'll be lucky to get $500-$600 for you system, if that. You will certainly not get over $1000. For a $1000 I could build my own system comparable to yours, but with new parts. But I wish you luck .... just my opinion, would be awesome if I were wrong.
