Hey guys,
I am new to DVA. I have been enrolled in this VA for about 3 months now and don't know where to begin. I probably enrolled in this to early, as i don't know very much on how to fly. Anyways, i would appreciate feedback on where you guys started to learn to fly with fsx. It is a very complex hobby, and as much as i read and practice, i feel like everyone is better than me. Thanks in advance.

Daniel, welcome to DVA. And don't worry, everyone feels that they stink when they first start. You're starting in a great a/c, the CRJ. Its a joy to fly and very easy to handle. What specificaly are you looking for help with?

Hey guys,
Thanks for the responses. To answer Kevin's question, I would like advice on where to learn to fly in general. As I said before, i think i applied for DVA too early (before i know how to fly). Any more advice would be appreciated. I know the learning center is available in fsx, is that a good place to start? Also, to comment on Matt's advice, DVA doesn't let me enroll until I have successfully completed one leg. Unfortunately, i am unable to do so because i don't know how to fly. Why don't they let you enroll before you have completed one leg? Please help me in becoming the best pilot i can be. Thanks in advance.

Daniel - I would recommend that you start with the learning center.... Get a couple of flights under your belt that way and then fly that first flight with DVA. I am still available to assist whether tonight or 7 mo. in the future

Yeah, Daniel, the learning center is your best bet. Once you get the hang of controling an aircraft, its fairly easy to switch between types. The same principles apply whether you're flying a Cessna 172 or a Boeing 747. Also, for the CRJ, your best bet would be to download the Aircraft Operating Manual from the Pilot Center and study it like your life depends on it. It will tell you all the info you need about the aircraft. Operating speeds, checklist, things like that. If you have anymore questions, feel free to email me. Like alot of other guys, and girls, here, I'm a RW pilot, so I'll be happy to answer your questions. Good luck.

Daniel remember its for fun and nothing to worrie about. We are all here to help with anything you might have a question on. Everyone has to start somewhere and I had the thrill of planes every since I was a lil boy. And since 1999 I was working at MLB airport as a ramp rat and still loving it. The best way to start I think is to fly some missions in FSX since you have a co pilot to talk you threw eveything as you go and that is the way to start and get use to your A/C. Since your starting in the CRJ try out any of the CRJ-700 ones in the missions since its almost the same cockpit as the CRJ-200. Remember anything you need help on we are here for you bud.

Daniel,
Please send me an email letting me know what time you can have a live chat. I would be glad to help you out and I am sure that I could point you in the right direction. You can find my email address by clicking on my name on the left then you will see my email address on my profile page. I look forward to hearing from you. As far as you saying you want to learn how to fly I can teach you all you need to know. Being a real world pilot I have a decent amount of flight time and I really think I could help you out. If you are willing to spend about 5 dollars then there is software you can purchase and I can fly in the same FS airplane with you ( its the same software that the flight academy uses) and I will get you going. The software is found here http://www.gates.to/
You don't have to use that software for me to be able to help you though, don't feel discouraged if you can't get it. Another tool that would really help you out in your training would be a microphone. You can buy a cheap one from wal-mart or something for about 15 dollars. Once you have a mic I can talk to you on a ventrilo or teamspeak server as I help teach you to fly the airplane, and then you can also fly online flights where you will have real controllers talking to you.
Before we have a talk I would recommend you to go Pilot Center->downloads->CRJ200 and download that. Just save it to your desktop or wherever you like and then auto install it. Then you want to go to the same place and download the newest version of ACARS and install it ( ACARS records all of your flight information and it will automatically file your flight reports for you).
As I said earlier It will be much easier if you will let me know when we can talk live via email, this way I can walk you through stuff and really get you going.
Look forward to hearing from you,
J.T.

My advice as a relative novice to flight simming is to read the manual's as they are there to help. before I joined I was able to taxi and take off but I was a complete failure when it came to landings. my friend a fellow DVA pilot gave me advice and though not brilliant I haven't crashed in a while :).
Also make use of the the aircrafts aids, i.e autopilot and autothrottle as they are there to help you and it makes things easier when learning your approaches etc.

Heys guys, thanks for your various helpful responses.
Just one question: When i click on the CRJ Operations manual, it says it's for the CRJ-200. Is it the same for the CRJ-700? Thanks in advance.

Daniel, the CRJ-700 and CRJ-200 are in the same family of a/c. Though there are differences, they are similar enough that the info in the manual for the CR2 will get you started in the CR7. And as for your joystick, that what I use too. I've had it for prob. 5 yrs at least and it still works great. Logitech makes great products that last.

Daniel,
It appears that you are in good hands with all the input everyone has given you so far. I too ran into the same situation when I bought a brand new pc along with FSX and then wanted to jump into Virtual Airlines, VATSIM etc. I too found that there was not a real logical learning path laid out for us newbies. I took the following approach and it is starting to pay off.
Learn your hardware and what it does.
Learn FSX. Be able to fly some of the simple aircraft and work your way up. The CRJ's are a good entry to jets but dont start with them. Most real world pilots will start with a single engine prop and work up. Before jumping on line you should be able to control the airplain completely through take off, climb out level and straight flight, decent, approach, and landing. The tutorials in FSX with get you started. If you have trouble with any one aspect, practice it until you feel you have it mastered. I spend as much time doing touch and go's offline as I do online flying. That is an area that I want to get better at so I practice.
By Learning ACARS early, you will be able to log a lot of your flight time and get credit for it. At least when your are flying delta jets. The other really good thing about ACARS is the feedback info it collects. I thought I was pretty hot until I started reading ACARS reports only to learn I had some areas I needed to practice.
My last thought has also been express by several others. don't be afraid to ask. I have consistanly found that everyone at DVA is more than willing to go out of their way to help. Finally, feel free to contact me directly if there ever are questions.
