Overclock your processor or you'll be disappointed. Recommended between 3.5GHz and 4.5GHz.

Shahzeb, what is your video card?
Also, to increase performance I would suggest getting better than a single core processor such as the new i7 or i5. If that isn't feasible to you, try overclocking to about 4.2GHz, and by that point you'd probably need liquid cooling on a single core. And you should increase the RAM especially if you're running any form of Vista + FSX, 4GB at the minimum.

Shahzeb, as unfortunate as it may sound, you can squeeze good performance out of your rig. But to get "great" performance, you should consider upgrading. Try overclocking the processor and updating the RAM a bit and see how it goes, the vid. card is OK.

Well I am not that 'eye candy' type of guy who cares a lot about scenery since I fly high. But I am looking for performance with FPS of 20 or more when with PMDG or other payware aircraft. Anyways, can you give me a step-by-step guide or a website on how to overclock the processor?

duo core isn't going to run fsx buddy. i had a low end quad-core...yet it was way......underpowered. i don't know about 64 bits since I find it frustrating to work with. also, upgrade your graphics card to at least a gtx260
if you don't know how to spell overclock or never seen that word before......leave it alone. or you will burn everything up and end up in miserable. my 2 cent

Yeah, tri-channel if your mobo supports it (which 96% of em do. I've seen 1 or 2 that just supports dual channel). What size are your DDR3 modules? And are you running a 32 bit OS? If so how is the stability with all that DDR3? I'm wondering because I'm tempted to make the switch to the i7.

let see. hmm answer one by one. lolz
i have the asus ramage 2 motherboard. all of i7 motherboard only support ddr3 memories. im running xp 32 bit with sp3. Stability? check my flight log.......and you'lll see how stable she is. almost all the flight are on 1x. really stable. i notice how my room got really hot....so i pump her back down to 4ghz. But at 5ghz, it's possible to be on watercool. Just have to have a really big watercooler though. plus run the pump on high speed.

Wait if your running a 32bit OS, you should only be limited to 4GB total system memory (between your GPU and RAM?). Also, on your i7 ovc, what are you running your multiplier and voltage at? I'm wondering this because I have a 4x120mm radiator with a CPU water block that supports both AM2+/AM3 and LGA1366, so if I do upgrade, it will be pretty cheap to upgrade to water cooling. All I would need is the tubing, res, and pump. I'd like to achieve 5GHz, but I'd wana know what multiplier and voltages to set first LOL

there's a memory tweak out there. it will show 4gb.
I know on vista, if you get the service packs, it will show all the memory available. same thing on xp, it will use all the memory available, but not show it.
1.4Vx33 be careful. I'm not suggesting you to do it.
also remember, This is an I7 extreme. It can push for things other regular i7 can not do.

Oh ok. I'm using 1.55v for my Phenom II 945 @ 4.0GHz, and I've got perfect stability after a 24hr Prime 95 torture test. Seems a bit low for the voltage for 5GHz? Anyways. Do you think you could link me up with your tweak? I'll try and use it on a virtual machine and see what I can do. If it works then I may switch back to 32 bit.

Interesting. I was always told by my IT superiors that when talking memory on a 32 bit os you also must consider video memory into the mix as it is addressed fromm the same pool and allocated as physical memory. So if you had say 4gig of ram and a gtx 280 with a gig of ram. After allocatting the 1gig of video memory to the register as useable you could only use 2.5gig of the 4 you had physical. 2 to the power of 32 = 4,294,967,296 bytes or 4Gb

yes, and that's why 12gb of tri-channel might seem overused. So you can purchase 6gb-trichannel if you wish.. However, I do many other applications along with FS. So 12gb comes in handy.
other than that, I don't know anything except pay my IT guy to keep my fs flying smoothly.

All I was saying was what I've heard. But if you've found a different way or mod that will let you use all of your system memory on a 32bit OS, then I'd love to check it out. But if you feel "dumb" by that, then I guess I'll stick with 64bit OS for now
Thanks

I am sorry but I am going to play devils advocate here and say there is no way that your 32 bit operating system is taking use than anymore than 3 or 4GB of ram and there is no way that its taking any use of 12GB of ram. This is not due to some simple limitation that software can get around, this is due to computer programming and the architecture of the operating system and how it operates. I would go as far to say as its physically impossible and I would question your IT guy a little more asking how exactly your 32 big OS is being able to use 12GB of ram.
Now there is one instance where 32 bit can do this and here is an excerpt, but this is not used in the home enviroment.
"However, you’re right that Physical Address Extension (PAE) can be used to address more than 4GB from 32-bit OSs–this is true of some Linux distributions and many 32-bit Windows OSs. Here’s the catch: applications have to be written specifically to take advantage of PAE, and the only applications that do that are very specialized tools or server applications like SQL Server, which don’t typically require that much RAM when running on a desktop OS. So, PAE won’t make your Photoshop or video editing app any faster, and it isn’t nearly as useful as it sounds."
And here is an excerpt from wikipedia
"Most CPUs are designed so that the contents of a single integer register can store the address (location) of any datum in the computer's virtual memory. Therefore, the total number of addresses in the virtual memory — the total amount of data the computer can keep in its working area — is determined by the width of these registers. Beginning in the 1960s with the IBM System/360, then (amongst many others) the DEC VAX minicomputer in the 1970s, and then with the Intel 80386 in the mid-1980s, a de facto consensus developed that 32 bits was a convenient register size. A 32-bit address register meant that 232 addresses, or 4 GB of RAM, could be referenced. At the time these architectures were devised, 4 GB of memory was so far beyond the typical quantities (16 MB) available in installations that this was considered to be enough "headroom" for addressing. 4 GB addresses were considered an appropriate size to work with for another important reason: 4 billion integers are enough to assign unique references to most physically countable things in applications like databases."
This is just my 2 cents, but I have never heard of a 32bit being programmed to handle more than 12GB of RAM. I wouldn't mind seeing Luke clarifying this if he doesn't mine stepping in on this issue

Mr. Tom and Weston.
If you want to feel free and explore your system. I'm not stopping you. Don't start to bash my ability to enjoy the game. If it makes you happy to run 64 bits while spending thousands at it.........go for it. I'm happy with what I have. and That's going to be the end of it. I'm not the software engineer and I'm not going to question my IT guy and his ability to help me run FSX smoothly.
This is why I hate to discuss it with people.

LOL, only if you make it ugly...I believe Weston was only asking for your advice so he could make an upgrade to help himself if needed. You're the one getting all hostile and refusing to provide information...which really I see no reason for.

I was just stating a point regarding 32 bit and 64 bit. I would also like to see your configuration mainly for the overclocking aspect, because I know its risky, but I wouldn't mind getting some more power out of my processor.
Is there anyway you would give us your rigs setup or the settings you use to OC, i mean if you don't I guess I understand but at the same time don't really get why you wouldn't want to help Weston or other people on the forums.
