I decided in a couple of months I will be purchasing a Mac desktop.
3 gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
2.66ghz Duo Core
Do you think these specs are suitable enough to fly FS9 and/or possibly FSX?
Also how does FS work using bootcamp? Is it a good Idea to go Mac just a few questions I had in mind?

Hate to break it to you guys, but with MAC now running Intel chips and the like there is little difference between MAC and PC.

Devin, If i were you i would go for the GT120 or 130 graphics card if you want to run fsx/9 well. the 9400 shares system memory and thus is an integrated graphics card, go for a discreet card. also i may suggest going to 4gb of memory and a faster processor if you can afford it.

Why are you running from PC? I mean honestly, unless your doing a ton of video and picture editing, there really is no gain to getting a mac. Theres less supported software, despite popular belief, its really not that much more stable, and your paying ALOT more for a computer you could build, or pay someone to build a system with the same specs. Or probably even better specs for a lower price. And if your going to run FS on that machine, your going to be running bootcamp, so your still stuck with Windows.
Just my 2c

I have a Macbook Pro and run FS9 and FSX and all my programs on it swimingly. It's portable - does everything. I run Bootcamp not Parallels for my XP partition...if you have questions - ask away.

Devin, good luck finding a quad core of any sort to be compatible with the obscure MOBOs they put in those things. Apple tries to get ya every way possible, that included. I mean honestly, how can you justify spending 2k+ on that computer with an onboard graphics card that uses system memory, and a load of junk processor? I could buy, ship, and pay someone to build a rig much better than that for under 2k if you look hard enough.

Neither have I with my current system, Andy. And I spent a lot less on it. MAC is good for video and picture editing, multi-media, etc. I just don't understand how people can justify spending that much on what you get for a MAC. You're just running bootcamp anyway, so what's the point?

I think eventually I'm going to switch to a Mac too - although I've run PCs for years and have built every machine I've had (including a half dozen Linux boxes). The only thing holding me back has been flightsim, but now that Mac runs Intel there's fewer reasons not to switch. The Mac OS is more stable, runs cleaner, and has exceptional support. Does Xplane require bootcamp? That's another option.

FSX/FS9 wont run on the Mac side, you will have Windows on the Bootcamp or parallels partition. As far as X-Plane goes - just buy the Mac version...and if you already have the Windows version - you just install it like normal when you are booted in to the Windows side.

I use mine for video editing, works flawlessly and Final Cut Pro is an exceptional program. Competes up there with Avid, which is what most folks in the industry are using nowadays. Audio production is also breeze when running 10.6. Just sayin'...

As we both mentioned above, FS9 and FSX run very well on the MBP. same as the photos - but being new hear, you probably haven't seen much of them...the PC is actually a great machine as well, I messed it up, and a reformat and it's running great. I have a simpit that can run off the PC or the MacBook...
Dan, knowledgeable may be pushing it! lol...if you get it, ask away...it's a good investment.

It's a good investment for multi-media specialists, not flight simmers. I could build a rig (like I said) much cheaper that can run FS9 or FSX better. If you get a Mac to do your multi-media, sure it's not BAD for FS, but it's definitely not meant to be a gaming rig to begin with.

I have nothing against macs, my only take on the situation here is I can tell you I will NEVER buy another computer, period. Ask Weston, building a computer is super cheap compared to buying a name brand with similar stats, he knows some things about comp building. You can build good FS rig for about 2 thousand dollars. If you bought a Computer from say dell or apple for 2k dollars, the homebuilt would blow it out of the water because you save so much money building them yourself.

J.T., that is very true! In 2005 I built a P4 rig that blew everything else on the market away for 1k, another 1k comp on the market at the time was lucky to have 2.0GHz processor and I was running my P4 at 3.0GHz back then.
You could save money buy building the same thing you'd get in a MAC and buy OSX instead of Windows and there ya go, save yourself a chunk of money and you still have the multi-media capabilities of a "Mac."

Yeah, I bought my computer about a year and a half ago, I bought one of those fancy dell gaming XPS's ( they are supposedly amazing *cough* not so great). I spent 4k on this system. About 6 months later me and my friend spend a month or two doing research for his computer. During christmas of 2008 he ordered exactly 1800 dollars worth of parts. His computer had duel 1gb ATI video cards, a phenom II quad core AMD processor, Sound blaster audio card, a Cooler master full case, 4 gigs of corsair DDR2.
This would have been a really solid rig to run flight simulator on and it cost him less than 2k. Yet my system cost twice as much and it's not near as good. This is why I will never be ignorant enough ( and I suggest the same to everybody else) and never buy another name brand computer.

But can you pack up your FS rig and take it next door solely by folding down the screen? Probably not, but I sure can!
