I'm toying with the idea of adding a second monitor. I was wondering if there is anything special I need to do to my computer to add the second monitor?

First, what type of ports do you have on your monitors? Like are these VGA, HDMI, DVI? What type of ports do you have on your video card? The best deal would be to have a video card with dual DVI ports for each monitor that also uses DVI...It is possible to use DVI for one monitor and VGA for the second if you have the same on your video card outputs...Since on my computer I had only one DVI port and one HDMI port and one monitor was VGA only then I bought a USB to VGA adaptor from Fry's which works. I use the flat screen on my left for the main flight deck and etc and the right flat screen for maps, instruments that can be undocked and moved to the second monitor...In other words the right monitor is used for utilities...Now if you want to spread your flight deck along the width of your two screens, that is a different story...I have tried it and could spread out the flight deck, but the scenery I wasn't able to do so I had a black section on the extreme left and one on the extreme right..There maybe software out there that will take care of this problem so I will let someone else address this issue.

Robert hit the main points. I have a 24" primary monitor for FS, and a 17" seccondary monitor for Firefox, ACARS, SB4, Active Sky etc.. when I fly. I like it because if I want to pull up a route deviation, weather etc.. I don't have to block FS to do so since FS is on its own monitor. Robert, when you had your FS on both monitors, were they running at the same resolution? From what I've heard, you can do it as long as both monitors are running at the same res.

I have a 27 for my main and a 20 for my secondary and like weston said, i keep FSX up on the main, except for my FMS which I put on the secondary and then run all my background programs from the secondary as well. Of course they are different resolutions but I just undock the FMS window from the FSX program and it drags over to the other monitor with no problems.

They also have DVI to VGA adapters that come with most video cards. I use that to run my 19-20 in (haven't really taken the time to measure it) crt that i have. For my main monitor I have a DVI.

It would appear that I only have 1 VGA port on my graphics card. Can you get a splitter, or should I invest in a new card altogether?

It won't do anything to help Dual Head 2 Go.You have to have Digital output to Digital Dual Head or Analog to Analog

Another solution is a Display Link device like the one found at this link http://www.buy.com/prod/iogear-usb-2-0-external-dvi-graphics-card-usb-iogear-usb-2-0-external/q/loc/101/207662066.html
This is a USB device that allows you to add another external video card. I use one on my second PC so that I can run additional applications and have them open at all times; FS Commander, ACARS, vasFMC etc.

In the early days of my 763 flightdeck I had five monitors on three GFX cards. Just undocked EICAS, ND/PFD, FMC etc. Now I use project magenta and half a real 762 flightdeck and a whole heap of hardware etc. But I found ATI cards easier to configure. Also look at matrox TH2GO.

I wanna thank everyone for all the feedback. I"m gonna get a new graphics card to start, and I was wondering what do you all consider a minimum for RAM? I've been wanting to upgrade that for a little while now. I'm currently running a paultry 1GB of DDR.
