I'm looking into replacing my HD 4870, it has too much stuttering problems and the AA isn't up to par like the Nvidia cards. I've been looking at this one and might buy it soon. I notice the bit is lower and I'm wondering if it'd have an impact on my FS performance. I currently run at 70FPS as I love the higher FPS.

Higher FPS is all in the mind. It's a scientific fact that the human cannot perceive FPS above 25 or 26 FPS. An 8400GS is definitely not the best choice. An 8800GTX would be a great choice for a cheap price with great results in FS.

I would take 25 FPS as long as it is detailed and smooth.

the fps debate makes me bonkers. if you can't tell the difference between 25 and 60 fps while playing a game (not just watching), then you've got some screws lose.
i used to play americas army and counter strike competitively - you would be nuts to lock your FPS at 25. rofl

Daniel, true 25fps and true 60fps there will be just the minutest difference in a person who has above average sight. As long as both are smooth and stutter-free. Just pure FPS.

getting a 8400GS is taking a step back rather than getting something the same or better. I'm not an Nvidia person, but i recommend something in the 9000 series or 100/200 series.

My friend told me to get a 9400GT at the least.
I know I won't find anything the same as the HD 4870 with a low price.
Also the FPS are distinguished because my card stutters like crazy! 25FPS on my card is not smooth at all it drives me crazy! I remember on an older card 25FPS was very smooth now I need to tweak it past that for it to seem smooth.
The reason being was that the Nvidia card had a Texture Clamp/Allow feature which made everything very smooth even at 25FPS.

Daniel, on NewEgg I found a Nvidia 9800 GT for 50 bucks cheaper than an HD 4870 and the 9800 GT's specs. are pretty much equal. For 10 dollars cheaper you can get a GTS 250 with better specs than the HD 4870.
The 9400GT you linked to is good, but if you want even better performance, spend the extra 50 to hop into the 200 series.
Also, stuttering is usually a CPU issue, not a GPU issue.

I'm real happy with my older 8800GTS. I think I've seen some comparisons (Tom's Hardware maybe???) where the uber-expensive cards don't deliver a whole lot more fps than the 8800 and 9800 cards, as CPU appears to be the major factor, not GPU.
Also, to beat a dead horse, don't get hung up on FPS, although I always thought 25 FPS was pretty smooth for FSX no matter what. You say you get 25 yet you experience stuttering? Doesn't compute....could it be your CPU?

btw, go eVGA - they have a step up program that you can trade in old cards towards new ones.

Daniel, have you ever thought about the possibility that maybe your 4870 is defective? I know many people that are running 4870's with FS9 and FSX with no problems at all. Thats with full AA and everything. I'm running a 4890 overclocked to 1.0GHz, and with all the 3D settings on max in the Catalyst driver, and FS9 tweaked to my standards, I have no performance issues at all. No studders, flickers or anything. If your going to go NVIDIA, anything in the 8000 or 9000 series would be a downgrade from your 4870, so I don't see why anyone in their right mind would make a downgrade like that. If you do however decide to buy one, don't expect any better performance, but expect to have to turn some settings down to get decent performance. I have a 9800GTX+ in another system with similar specs on everything else, and I get nowhere near the performance in FS9 or FSX I get with the 4890. But, if you have your heart set on going green, then the only step up would be a GTX275 (maybe), or a GTX285. I've tinkered with systems with the GTX285, and FS9 and FSX get about the same performance as the 4890. However, if you want to pitch in a little more money, AMD/ATI just released the worlds fastest GPU a couple weeks ago. It's the 5870, and it's only $380 (which is a STEAL, considering NVIDIAS fastest single card is the GTX295 (which is really just 2 overclocked GTX275's in one card, and since FS can only utilize 1 GPU, running the GTX295 with FS would just be like running a GTX275. If that didn't make sense e-mail me) which is priced at around $500, and YES, the 5870 does beat the GTX295 in games that optimize 2 GPU's).

Thanks for that note Weston, although If I will not be changing the card what should I go by doing?
I've tried almost everything to try and solve the problem. Might it be my monitor?
It is from May 2006, it is a Insignia 15 inch LCD Television. I've raised the "Phase" to 100 and lowered it to 0.
It only has a VGA input from which I connect the HD 4870 via the DVI-VGA adapter. I heard that the VGA signal is an analog signal while the DVI signal is an all digital signal. It could be that the Refresh Rate is too low and 60 and over may be too high for it? Causing the stutters.
Would upgrading my monitor stop any of this? I was looking at an LG 20 Inch monitor today at Costco and was thinking on buying it but I'd like to get some input on this before I do. I don't want a huge screen as it causes a performance impact when I have to turn up the resolution.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Daniel, with your current system including an HD4870, it shouldn't prove an issue to increase the monitor size. Before updating your monitor (because yours is extremely outdated and could be causing the issues), try limiting you FPS to about 30-40ish and see if it removes the stutters.

Boy do I feel old! I'm running six monitors off three Nvidia 7600GTs and regularly get 25+ FPS with apps open all over the place.
For me, stepping "up" to the 8800GTX would be a quantum leap!

Nothing at all wrong with the 7600GTS--I ran FSX just fine on it with my old PC. Very nice card.
