The new CPU arrives today, so I can complete my new rig. The million dollar question I am faced with is should I load XP or Vista on it? It will be running FS2004 for now, but I will be migrating to FSX and Win7 later.
I ask because I have used FS2004 on my laptop under both Vista and XP. It's a 4-year-old laptop, but it seems to run better with Vista. I never noticed a real difference with FS2004 on either. However, I remember a time when I was tasked with wiping down a bunch of brand new Northwood and Prescott P4's (that came with XP) to install 98SE on them. It seemed like a P4 2.4 w/1GB RAM ran 98SE no better than a P3 733 w/128-256mb RAM. I am also noticing this with new office PC's I order and our applications. While they run fine in XP, it seems like they are much more responsive with Vista. I suppose it's a purely subjective thing that cannot really be measured. What have been your experiences?

Vista simply sucks.
I'd either install Windows 7, or XP...

Windows 7 .... several of us have it and love it. After using Windows 7 now for about a week or so it is better than VISTA. I think going to XP would be a mistake. Windows 7 fixes many things that made VISTA so unattractive to a large number of people. Bottome line is, if you can afford to get VISTA now, you might as well just go ahead and get Windows 7.
...one last thing that I noticed about Windows 7: I didn't have to install any drivers...none. Not even chipset drivers to use the ethernet on the motherboard. Everything worked perfectly. Under VISTA I would have to load the motherboard driver CD and also my printer driver. Not this time, I turned my printer on, plugged in the USB, and Windows found and install it all in a few minutes.

Ok, I'll throw my 2 cents in here. I ran Vista for about 1.5 years with FS9 and everything. Never had a problem with it. As long as you know a decent bit about tweaking some stuff, you should be fine running it. However, others have had stability issues and what not, so I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe I just got lucky lol. Anyways, I've been running 7 ever since it was a Vista Update. Its amazing how much its progressed. If your going to buy a new OS, then definitely go 7

Vista or XP is a no-cost option. I have several XP Pro and Vista Business licenses sitting around unused. Win7 I actually have to buy. I've never started using a Windows operating system immediately upon release, and I'm not going to start now. I'll be letting other people deal with the inevitable issues of FS vs. Win7. I like to wait for some patches and possibly a SP before I migrate to Microsoft's latest creations. It's probably a practice that I bring home with me from my IT career, but I'm stuck with it. That said, I liked the Win7 RC that I ran for 3 months on my laptop. Win7 is on my upgrade radar, but I'm not buying it right now. The choice is really between the two that I currently possess: XP Pro and Vista Business.
Weston, glad you chimed in since our rigs are vaguely similar from what I've read. I ran FS9 under Vista Business 32-bit for several months, with my entire add-on collection. No problems. XP was the same way on the same hardware. Vista seemed to run FS9 and everything a little better than XP, but not enough that I'd pay for it if I had to, and it could have just as easily been placebo.

Ahhh...I see. Since that is the case, I'd go with XP then, IMO.
I cam completely understand wanting to wait a while before moving to a new platform. But Microsoft may have gotten this one right for a change....lol, time will tell.

Speaking from my experience with the Win7 RC, I will say that I'm inclined to agree that they might have gotten it right. It is the only Windows OS I have ever used that actually performed better than its predecessor with a default install. Of course, I base that statement on my own purely subjective usage. I didn't benchmark the two, but I've never had much faith in benchmarks.
For general usage, I would not even consider returning to XP. I prefer Vista much more in that regard. My real question though is largely an unknown. I'm wondering if XP can properly utilize a modern PC. I know that 98SE basically hit a wall, and I suspect that XP does too. Going from 1GB to 2GB on several XP machines didn't really accomplish much, but it does make quite a difference in Vista (for example). I can trim both XP and Vista down to a level of minimal overhead. Granted, I can trim XP more and do it to the install CD.

I wouldn't bother with Vista, just go right to 7 and save yourself the aggravation.

Well, I ended up opting for Vista. Restored my WoAI traffic, cranked up the settings, and took a tour of the KATL area in the DF727 with 100% traffic. Flawless. Now I get to finish reinstalling all my add-ons. Fun, fun, fun.
