Ignoring the little voice screaming NOOOO!!! inside my head, I went to Best Buy tonight and bought Windows 7 Home Premium. Three very frustrating hours after starting the install, I am ready to throw the whole package into my fireplace.
Following the instructions, stick CD in my PC and try to run SETUP.EXE. No go. After changing my BIOS to boot from the CD, I actually got W7 64-bit to install. OK, back on track, right? Wrong.
Windows 7 did not find my sound card (obscure company called Soundblaster), and worse did not find my wireless hardware. Now I have no internet connection. OK, well I guess I gotta go buy a new one tomorrow. In the meantime, I will re-install my newly updated Kaspersky CD. Windows cranks along with a message "verifying installer". After 20 minutes, it is stuck at 68%. I click on the window, and get a "Not Responding" message. Rebooted, tried to install again...this time "verifying installer" sticks at 77% (no hard drive or CD player activity indicated). Rebooted, and try #3. Sticks at 74%. So, now I have no Internet and no antivirus. Other than that, the desktop looks really purty.
Yes, I did run the upgrade advisor, and it told me that everything was ok..."Your computer can run Windows 7....Bill Gates says go spend 120 bucks on it and watch it not work" (ok, I made up some of that).
Could somebody please remind me why W7 is so great? Normally, if I don't like something I buy, I return it. Doesn't work that way with software, especially Microsoft software. I am thoroughly disgusted, out a bunch of money, and now may have to spend a bunch of time re-installing XP. Never again.
To anyone considering the purchase...think real hard.

It's now 3:35am, been at this thing for 6 hours. I will get this to work if it kills me. So far, W7 has hung 3 times--just froze, had to hit the reset button. Dug up another wireless card, ripped open the case and installed it, then could not run the software. Used laptop, got updated drivers, sent to USB key, then installed OK. Could not for the life of me figure out how to connect to my network....so I re-installed a second time and somehow was able to connect. Same problems with my wireless keyboard/mouse dirvers, Kaspersky (had to uninstall 2009 and install 2010), eVGA card, Sound Blaster x-fi. At least W7 found my Canon printer! Got all that working, but my boot up time is now significantly longer.
W7 may be great for the Vista upgrade, but a complete re-install from XP is maddening. I can't wait to try loading all of my FSX stuff, Office 2003, blah blah.
FWIW, my system does seem to be a lot faster. All will be forgiven if FSX hums and I can fly my Citation Mustang without OOM messages!

Jack,
There must be something seriously wrong with the compatibility. I have been tracking Windows 7 reviews for quite some time now and so far every one has reported positive.
Couple of things:
- What did the upgrade adviser really say. Can you look little more carefully and see if there are any warnings also (in yellow), beyond errors (in red). See what they say and either try to follow the advisory.
- Are you doing a 'clean install'. It's what Microsoft recommends and it clearly written all over the place in each review I have read. Means DO NOT try to install Windows 7 over XP. Boot it from the DVD, wipe the HDD and install everything from scratch. If it is a W7 over XP install, you are surely having problems and that's what been announced everywhere.
- Normally I would collect all drivers from manufacturer's website (or other sites if not available) for the operating system in question, write them to a CD or a external HDD and then 'take the plunge' with everything backed up and ready to roll back, 'just in case'. You somehow got a little too exited, but it's OK now. I just hope you have backed up your data and nessecary files.
- Regarding 64 bit. Why did you get 64 bit? How old is your PC? Have you got the 64 bit compatibility ON. People do have reported compatibility issues here. Google around and find more.
- What does your hardware vendor (HP/DELL/Compaq) say about compatibility. Have those guys given a green signal on the upgrade or are they saying "Sorry, this one is not for you" sign.
It's great that you have finally managed to get your system back online again, though with issues. It's great to know that you have observed it to be a lot faster.
Now that you are back online, I recommend to go to every manufacturer's site related to the hardware (camera, joystick, modem, LAN Card etc. etc.) and install the correct divers meant for Windows 7 or at-least Vista. This should smoothen things out for you even further. And do that before installing any of the applications like MS Office, FS X etc. This way if something goes back again, atleast you would not have spend time there.

In my 10 years as a network administrator, and countless ones before that as a "power user", I have personally used and professionally supported every Microsoft Windows OS since 3.1 (with the exception of ME, I refused to support or use it). During that time, I have discovered that it is ALWAYS a crapshoot when using a new version of Windows immediately after release. You will find articles and users all over the internet reporting success and zero problems, yet I always take these with a grain of salt. I have never encountered problems using betas, release candidates, or initial releases on any of my machines, but I have been called upon to fix plenty of them. Anything I use as a primary or gaming rig does not get a new Windows OS until there is at least 1 SP released, or I have tested it extensively for what I intend to do. Windows 7 will be getting that test on my gaming rig with FSX, simply because I preferred even an unstable beta of 7 to Vista SP2.
A few pieces of advice for the future:
1. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER do an OS upgrade. I do not know if that is actually what you did. However, for the record, never do it.
2. Invest in a disk imaging program like Acronis True Image and an external hard drive. Save a complete image of your existing install before attempting to do anything like this. Had you done so, returning to XP would have taken you however long it took Acronis to restore that image. A large image from a USB hard drive would probably be 30 minutes or so. After that 30 minutes, you would have been looking at XP as it was whenever you made that image.
3. When you get XP back as you want it, use the aforementioned program to image it, then repeat your experiment with Windows 7 until you find success. A clean install of Windows 7 does not take long at all. In my experience, it installs faster than Vista, which installed faster than XP.

Gurmeet:
Thanks for the info. I think I had MOST of that covered ahead of time. I did do a clean install, but I did not collect my drivers ahead of time because I had all of my install CDs (I built this computer from scratch). What I didn't recognize was the inability of W7-64 to recognize almost almost all of my drivers, and especially my wireless card. Since I was cut off from the Internet, that made things difficult.
I'm definitely continuing to grab drivers, but it looks like my most serious issues (wireless card, antivirus, Logitech keyboard/mouse, video card) are behind me. I'm currently struggling with my Canon Pixma MP470 printer--it looks like I can't get a compatible driver for the scanner.
I guess the lesson learned here is beware the clean install when going from 32 bit XP to 64 bit W7. It's not point-and-click.

I never expect anything involving an OS install to be point-and-click. While it often is just that simple, Microsoft has taught me many times not to "expect" it to be.
Do you currently use anything for imaging?

Michael--looks like we crossed in the mail. Yep, I learned my lesson back in the Windows ME days--NEVER do an upgrade, ALWAYS do a clean install. The Windows 7 docs are very clear--XP users must do a clean install. Didn't do an image, because I did not want to pay for an imaging program for a one-time backup, and my home machine is not mission-critical. In a corporate environment it makes sense because you're doing it dozens of times. I'm going to stick with W7, so no image means I can't go back and I'm forced to get this puppy working to my satisfaction.

There are free imaging programs out there, and I have used them before with success. I simply do not use them here since I do not trust their RAID controller support. DriveImage XML is the one I have tested successfully on workstations.
As for upgrades, the few people I know that attempted a Win7 upgrade from Vista said it took hours and a few attempts. Then they gave up and went with a clean install.

I forgot to add this: Acronis TrueImage Home 2010 is $49.99 on their website. While your machine is not mission-critical, I imagine you have a lot of time invested in it with FS configuration and add-ons to get it running as you like. I know that I do. I do keep all of my add-on installers, keys, and d/l'd freeware saved elsewhere though. The way I actually use Acronis is a bit different than just a backup. I like clean installs on a regular basis; a habit I got into with Win95 and 98SE. I keep a clean image with FS installed and set up as I want, as well as other software I use, and minimal Windows updates. Periodically, I save anything I need to save, restore that image, update as needed, and enjoy the benefits of a clean install with a minimal amount of time lost.

Windows 7 has worked great for me, I've had it on 4 machines since day one of the beta program. I have had wireless NIC driver issues but I've been able to work around that.

Window XP, cassette music tapes, King James Version, self winding watches, a library card, call me old fashion if you will.
I just about went crazy when I reinstalled FSX the other day to do some aerobatics in the Extra.
If I ever upgrade my OS I will take it to the guys who built my computer and pay them to do it. I would rather cut a check than have 6,8,10 hours of aggravation.
God bless you guys who can...I CAN NOT.

I was reading an article in my local newspaper today. They guy suggested not to go straight from a 32 bit previous system to the 64 bit W7 because you previously had 32 bit drivers, and some plug and play hardware may not be 64bit compatible.

A good practice for a clean install of any Windows OS is to get all of the drivers for the machine in question, beforehand. Have them on a USB key, CD, or embed them in the Windows install media. Embedding video and audio drivers can have mixed results. Vista was great about recognizing all kinds of hardware by default, and so were the Win7 RC's, but you do not want to count on that. I always update them, whether Windows recognized my hardware or not.

W7 did a pretty good job of recognizing things. After the install, I immediately grabbed the latest NVIDIA drivers for my card. Office 2003 and FSX installed no problem, but had trouble with ACARS (actually, it was FSUIPC).
The only weird thing left is when I try to run the Windows Experience Index, it bombs and tells me that "an error is being reported from the operating system, driver, or other component". I've been running all sorts of troubleshooting, but everything is coming up OK. I guess it's not a major deal.

Sorry you are having issues Jack. I upgraded yesterday and have had zero problems. The upgrade took about 4 hours and I was upgrading from Vista so maybe that is why mine went so smooth. It recognized all my drivers and restored all my files and programs just the way they were. I think because you were upgrading from XP, it made you upgrade that much more difficult. Hope you get yours figured out.

yeah, my q6600 3ghz, 8800gts 640, 4G ram 1TB homebuilt is kind of a dog, Houston...thx for inquiring.
I guess my biggest surprise was the inability of W7 to at least "get by" with its own drivers to get me started, especially the crucial ones. I agree with you Mark in that the XP-32 to W7-64 is probably the most difficult path....it's just that I did a ton of reading thru boards on a bunch of sites and everyone kept saying that their upgrade process was wonderful. Oh, well...it's coming along. So far all of my FS stuff (except ACARS) has popped in just fine.

well i've had very good luck with the RC. I'm hoping to get the 3-pack Home Premuim and install it on all 3 computers that we have. I need to get it for my siblings computer as they are running the RC right now and thats gonna stop working next year. They've had no problems with their PC
one question for you Jack, doesn't the package come with both 32 bit and 64 bit? If so, why don't you try putting the 32bit on and see if that works better. Then again, you have 4 GB of ram...

W7 does give you both 32 and 64 bit disks in the package. I wanted to go 64 bit because my Citation Mustang kept running out of memory (great package BTW). I did think about that after the install, but since I was going from XP to W7 I gotta think I would've had the same problems. Whenever I went looking for drivers, there were usually XP, Vista and W7 variations.

I took my Asus computer to best buy where I bought mine, and had them install windows 7 for me........this way I wouuldn't have the headaches that some have had. Also the geek squad is more knowledgeable with these things than I. I took my computer home last night and briefly flew and the computer is excellent........I have heard that others, Like my friend
Scott H. had so many problems that he wanted to commit hairy karey...! But He managed to get his to do pretty much what he wanted.......I have also bought a toshiba lap top that though not rated wwith a good card seems to be handlilng the basic of flight sim 2004. I can't complain at all with my experience with windows 7 But I have only had my computer home for 12 hours......

biggest issue I ran into with the Windows 7 "upgrade" was that I did a "clean install" with XP - as in blank hard drive - that won't work out of the box, so you have to modify the registry or reinstall XP and "upgrade it" which is really stupid if you really do want to go "clean"...
Sounds like something got crossed up in the install - aside from the issue mentioned above with the clean install issue, I have had nothing but good luck - I have to admit, it's a good OS so far as I can tell... I do have to get used to the Windows 7 look and feel, but I'll manage

It took a while, but I finally got everything behaving properly...ACARS, FSINN and FSX. I actually flirted with Squawkbox because I was convinced that FSINN wasn't playing nice, but after running thru the VATSIM forums I got it to work. I ended up calling out all FSINN executables thru my Windows Firewall, which is not something I had to do in XP. I also listed them in my upgraded Kaspersky AV that I had to install for W7--didn't need to do that earlier. Finally, I just gave up on UAC and shut if off.
I'm pretty certain that ACARS and FSX were always fine...it was FSINN.

I think the best way to upgrade to Windows 7 is to just buy a new computer, and like all other windows systems, updates will fix problems in time. I read of many problems on the windows 7 fan site with games, but they will be worked out in time.
