Yes you can
If u own both fs9 and fsx which do u prefer and why??
FS9 because I can run it, but when I get a powerful machine, it's off to FSX as developers ar not developing anything else for FS9.

Mike - there is plenty out there - and more being developed (maybe not engineering since ACES is gone) but there are still folks making great products for FS9.
I run FS9 and FSX on the same computer but different drives. I like FS9 with all the standard goodies for online group events and I prefer FSX with ASX, RC4, FSPassX, etc, when I'm flying solo online or offline.

I don't see why everyone keeps saying developers are not making anything for FS9 these days. Last I checked, Quality Wings will have the 757 available for FS9, FSdreamteam makes all their sceneries for both FS9 and FSX, etc, etc. The only companty that said they would not be making a product for FS9 is the Level D 757. And we all know that has been in develpment for over 3 years! I have FS9 and FSX and can honestly say that with all my add ons and aircraft, I enjoy flying FS9 more.

Michael,
Could not understand your last comment - as to what's the point quoting Andrew's comment word by word and put a really afterwards.
Neil,
It depends on what you are trying to achieve. FS9 is a older mature systems with lots of add-ons in all categories (scenery, utilities, commercial, military planes) and is the core development platform for many systems developers like PMDG, for example.
FSX has been here for sometime. It is graphically rich and even though developers have been building systems for it, it's extensive resource requirements have kept it from achieving an achievement rate that this system deserves.
I somehow am not able to judge the objective of the question you initially raised. From whatever I could gather, the short answer is it's a individual (rather your own) preference. If you can afford it and are looking for a graphically rich environment, go for FSX. If you have a older system, and are looking at flight simulation more from a systems point of view rather than the visual appeal, go for FS2004. It's a very good platform and gets the job done.
For more details, refer to the link on the left navigation of the page or click here (http://www.deltava.org/simversionstats.do ). As of October 2009, at DVA, 63.6% of people are using FS2004 and 35.4% people are using FSX. There is a likely overlap here also (people like you and Andrew for example) who are using both.
If you had been following water cooler threads for some time, I am sure that you are also familiar with the link Andy has been giving to quite a number of people http://www.flightsimulatorguide.com/reviews/aircraft/files.php?cat=13&cmd=all&sort=license&order=asc&page=1 I hope you will find your answer here also.

I agree with Gurmeet--it is individual choice. All I know is, over the years I could never stick with an FS version until FSX came along. I am a graphics person, and I like what FSX delivers out of the box. Of course, I then go out and get UTX, GEX, REX.......
That being said, FS9 has a ton of life left. I've seen screenshots here that I could not believe were from FS9, but they were. Once you slap in some of these incredible add-ons that are available, FS9 looks great and still delivers on the frames. Funny, I seem to remember a great hue and cry when FS9 came out about how tough it was on frame rates.
I think the main reason that people stick with FS9 is that they've invested a ton of money in add-ons--a very good reason IMHO. Fewer payware airplanes are being created, but what is out there is excellent--how many different planes does one need? Point of fact--I'm still waiting for the PMDG 737 for FSX, yet the FS9 crowd merrily flies along.

The problem with FSX is you need a pretty powerful machine to get any performance out of it. I would be curious to see how FSX does with Windows 7.

I have been using FS9 since around the beginning of '04. Obviously, I am one of those people that preferred to stick with the existing investment in FS9. I bought and installed FSX Gold last night.
Without installing any of my add-ons that work with FSX, I was extremely surprised at how my rig handled it with basically everything maxed. Granted, these were default aircraft, but I flew them from the VC. Incidentally, it took FS9 payware a little while to get to the quality of these default aircraft VC's. Graphically, everything is much improved. I expected it to be a slide show with the settings cranked like that, but it wasn't at all.

Mike - you don't need a super rig. My old HP Media Center Edition worked great with middle of the road settings - what happened to me is as I added more eye candy - I demanded more from my card - which lead to an overheating situation unless I had the box open and a fan blowing on it...then once I decided I needed a better machine anyway - I solicited the help of one of our members and he and I picked out every piece and part - and discussed the pros and cons of all - built a rig - that runs them both great - and again, it is really not a powerhouse machine.
FSX and FS9 run great on my Macbook as well - actually other then a bit of heat - I run FSX maxed out on the MBP.
My neighbor has W7 Ultimate - we installed FSX last night - and without adding any addons (and upgrading his machine from WXP) and running FSX in XP3 Compatibility mode - it's running fantastically - it was almost too easy to install.

Andrew, What exactly does running FSX or FS9 in XP3 or VistaSP2 do? I just upgraded from Vista64 bit to Windows764 bit. I have had no issues so far and do not run FS9 in compatibility mode. I do run it in admin mode always. I am thinking about reinstalling FSX to see how it works on this machine with Windows7. Have not had FSX installed in over 6 months.

I'll be performing an experiment tomorrow with a clean install of Win7 Pro 64 and FSX. I'm hoping that it works well enough for me to keep Win7, but the Vista 32 drive image will be standing fast nearby if it goes wrong.
