Intel i5 or i7 processor, either one I suggest overclocking. But it also depends on your motherboard, because the i5 and i7 fit on only a small range of boards at this time.

This is what I'm thinking about right now since my motherboard doesn't support the i5 or i7.
Anyone have this processor?

Weird....Newegg calls it the Q9550, but it looks like the same proc.
Since FS doesn't take advantage of multiple cores, you might want to think about a faster dual core like the E8600.
Whatever you get, don't use the stock cooler, buy an aftermarket one so you can overclock safely.

I have the i7-920...I haven't OC'd but FS performance in FS9 is very good, but in FSX, my traffic kind of kills it. I do have to say, though, that when running normal tasks (Photoshop, Bridge, Firefox, Windows Explorer at once) the CPU usage is less than 5%...so I say get it!!

Where have you been for the last few years?! FSX can take advantage of up to 256 cores with the new SPs.

You may want to reconsider the i5 or the i7 Lynnfield sets - they automatically overclock/put the core into turbo mode depending on how many cores are in use - great for the programs (most of them out there) that don't take advantage of multiple cores
According to Tom's Hardware site, the Core i5 outperforms the Core 2 Quad Extreme processors and the integrated PCI express graphics into the CPU are not a disadvantage unless you are pumping out higher resolutions (like 1920x or so I believe)
Gigabyte and others make some nice motherboards for the LGA1156 socket, but the biggest issue IMHO is a good power supply to handle the C6 state changes...

Here are some choices for you - I have the Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P - the bios did have an issue with the iphone syncing, but a new bios came out yesterday and it fixed it - this is apparently a P55 issue, not a Gigabyte issue, but they have resolved it for those that have their boards

Okay thanks George. I'm still in the process of identifying which mobo I have but as far as I know I run DDR2 memory so that would make the i5 incompatible. I will upload one more picture of it.

For the Windows Experience Index, mine rated overall 5.9 but that is for the HD at 5.9, which is your basic SATA drive, nothing fancy. Processor and RAM 7.4, graphics 7.0 (GTS 250) - the ratings go from 1.0 to 7.9
That is the Core i7-860 with no overclocking on a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P

Hi Logan,
My CPU is a Q6600. You might want to think about hand lapping the CPU, and the heat sink. [They say your CPU will run about 8C cooler] Sure makes sense to me. I have a meter on my CPU, and I see all 4 cores being used on my CPU right now on a 16 hour flight. [why would some one say FSX only uses 2 cores????] Yes, always a good aftermaket CPU cooling fan.
Cheers,
Jerry

Logan,
you have to set a budget on what you are willing to spend, after you get a price figured out, then you need to decide which way you are going to go, Even if you go the i5 or i7 route, your still going to need the right memory, a Motherboard designed for what you are going to do with it, Upgraded VC ATI is releasing a new card that is better performing than the GTX285 which is what I run, anyway theres more to it than just slapping a processor and some memory and a VC into building a gaming machine, I ran A Q board for a year or two Still have the thing, with FSX and 9 set up correctly I had some very enjoyable times with it.
On an i7 Platform now, and It is not cheap, just my preference on how i set mine up Talk to Terry , Andrew, and Chris, they're on Q chips, and reasonably Priced, those prices have dropped considerably in the hardware realm now, and you could get a very nice system set up. Either way there is a lot of good advice here, just some more thing for you to think about before you spend your hard earned money on

Yes Anythony I agree And that's what I've been going by. That's how I came up with the Q9400 and the GTX 260. In the future when I "make my first million" haha I will go with the best you can get. I know this setup will do me fairly well though and that's what I'm looking for right now.
