Aiden, welcome to DVA!
Please read the Online Flying Manual, located in your Documents Library within the Pilot Center. It'll solve all your doubts.

Aiden, again welcome to DVA! One other thing to check out is the Pilot Resource Center on VATSIM. They have a lot of docs explaining what to do, how to connect, etc. Enjoy your time here at the best VA on the net!

To help you out with immediate starters:
1. Download and Install Online flying kit from the DVA library, or download and install Squawkbox 4 and Servinfo from AVSIM. Google around for location, you will find it.
2. Have your VATSIM ID and password handy.
3. Go to DVA route plotter (Pilot Centre) and generate a route. Take a note of all the information (Departure, Arrival, Alternate). Route plotter will give you a route at the bottom. Keep it handy (in notepad).
4. Open SquawkBox flight plan. Fill in all the necessary information (Departure, Alternate, Arrival, Route) from what you already have. Assuming you will be flying the B737-800 fill in a TAS of around 435. Fill in the fuel that you plan to use and fuel you have on board. Any remarks (optional) can be filled in. I usually fill in the expected SID and runway beforehand I plan to land on.
5. Make sure you are at a gate (not at the active runway) at the departure airport and press connect. Once connected (after the multiplayer session using lobby screen), your black Squawkbox screen will show either of the Mode C or Standby LED glowing.
6. Go to flight plan and press "Send Flight Plan". It will take a minute or so to get it updated in VATSIM.
7. If a ATC is working in your area, you should see a ATC names and frequencies listed on the right side window in Squawkbox. Take a note of these and contact them in order (Clearance, Ground, Tower) by manually changing your frequency in your COM1 radio and putting your text in the top and pressing enter. Your message will reflect in the chat window. Wait for a response. If not, check your frequencies and try again after some time.
8. That is pretty much it. From here you will announce your intentions on all important phases of your flight at active frequencies and seek any clarifications. You will be instructed from time to time to change your frequencies based on the area and phase of flight (ground, departure, tower, approach, ground). Follow accordingly and request any clarifications. I also recommend putting "Newbie" in the remarks area. The controllers take a note of it and are a little extra approachable with that.
9. I recommend using Sevinfo. It's a very good tool. Helps you see which controllers are where, see yourself on a map and check our weather information which helps plan the departure and approach runway.
10. Read the online flying manual at DVA library and Pilot Resource Centre at VATSIM. They are very helpful resources. The best however according to me (it's OK of opinions differ) is to take a full flight (from gate to gate) using default MSFS ATC. Pause as many times as your like (don't connect to VATSIM in this case) and write down everything. Once clear of the expectations and ATC phraseology, your confidence will be lot better.

Also, you may want to try flying out of KSLC when there's a few controllers online...there are a number of DVA folks who also control there, and that's where the DVA flight academy is [virtually] located.
