I'm a novice at this and need some input, please. What I want to do is run FSX on my main monitor but show the running Squawkbox 4 and ACARS on a 2nd monitor. My GTX275 card has a 2nd DVI output, so I don't think connecting a 2nd montior (different resolution) should be a problem - or will it? My question is how does one "move "the SB4 and ACARS display so it shows on the 2nd monitor, and will doing so put any additional or significant load on the video card? Thanks.

I think you can just drag the windows onto the second monitor, and I think they'll save their window positions. If ACARS doesn't, let me know. I'll temporarily confiscate one of my kids' LCDs and test this out.

Luke, you're all over the place and I appreciate your input on the Vatsim forum. As you can see, I'm now looking at the alternative of simply running everything off one computer and moving the display. It might be simpler than trying to work with SimConnect.

I agree with you. If your PC has the oomph (and in most cases if you have a quad-core or high-end dual-core it does), you're far better off keeping everything on one PC. Fewer hassles.

It's a custom-built i7 920 o/c'd to 3.8, 6gb Corsair Dominator RAM and FSX running on a dedicated hdd. However, the GTX275 is running at stock.

this is what im doing currently: go to start - control pannel - display - settings - check the button that says extend my windows desktop onto this monitor.
make sure both your monitors are plugged in before doing this.
If you are then able to use both monitors, as in you're able to drag a window from one to the other, then it's working properly. Now, if you want to play fs on one screen, then have all the other windows on the other, you must run fs in window format and enlarge that window to the size of your monitor

Luke, I would connect the 2nd monitor to my GTX 275 card and it would not extend the desktop - I only would want to place the Squawkbox "box" and perhaps ACARS on the 2nd display. Jake, thanks for the link. It looks like it will be a big help.

do you have it to the point where you can drag one window across from one screen to the other? if so, just run FS in windowed mode and you should be fine, just place everything where you want it

Ok here's the scoop on how to do this.
1. open up the display properties, after you connect the second LCD or CRT to the card. Make sure you restart the PC if you connect it hot(while the pc is running)
2. If you are on XP you will see a shaded monitor in the display box, right click the shaded box and make it active. Extend this display.
3. now you will have both acticvated. click the monitor you want to act as the main display. there will be an action box stating this, put a check mark in that box that corrolates to the one you want.
4. verify the correct screen resoulution for the monitor you made active.
5. Vista and Win 7 will automatically do this for you.(activate the monitors that is, you have to provide the imput on which one you want to be the main display.
My Matrox THg went poop on me and i am running four monitors now on XP , Vista and Win7, Yes I triple Boot, After trying to VM it all I gave up, Thanx Luke for your post in FB, stop giving me bright Ideas
Any Hoot you run into a jam give me a shout I can remote call you and walk you through it. You can not however run FS in Full screen It will blank out the other monitors. Window Mode only. Drag your ACARS, SB and what not to the other monitor.size them any way you want and all will be good to go....

There's a setting in FSX options that is called (I think) "Pause on Task Switch". Uncheck it.

Chuck,
I'm currently running six monitors off three Nvidia 7600GT cards (Hey! They were awesome in 2006! ) although I only routinely power up 4 of them.
Anyhoo...
Right click on the desktop, go to settings and you'll see a graphical representation of all of your monitors. They will be grayed out if disabled. If so, then right click on the appropriate monitor and select "enable". Once all of the displays come up, click on the "Identify" button to determine which monitor is which.
Now, with that done, click and drag each monitor to it's physical location on your desktop. For instance, my top row of monitors are #6, #4, #5 and the bottom row are displays #3, #1, and #2 with the #1 monitor being my "primary" display.
Here is an important tip: When getting ready to work with multiple monitors, make sure each is plugged in and powered up PRIOR to booting windows. This will make sure that the OS recognizes them at boot time as "connected".
Once they are all up and running, drag your programs wherever you want them. In my version of fs (2004), I right-click on a panel (i.e; the GPS) and select "Undock this window" then drag it wherever I want it. Note that the "Undock this window" option is only available in Windowed mode.
Give it a shot and keep us updated on your progress.
Good Luck

LOL Gurmeet!
One of my part-times jobs is managing databases for a large company in Austin, TX. Since they are replicating data in real-time, I have VPN remote desktop sessions open to as many as 12 databases (split-screen on each) so I can watch the data traveling around the world in real-time. It's an awesome setup for this (although Comcast probably thinks I'm a NASA subcontractor with the bandwidth I'm using ).
If your a programmer and/or Database Administrator, then multiple monitors can't be beat, flying FS with them is awesome too

Mark,
How can I be sure. It's your machine not mine.
This is the best guess however, based on years of working with windowed applications.
If a snapshot can be shared along with your Control Panel -> Display Settings I can be 100% sure. But unless I have access to that, it's a estimate.
Safari is storing user preferences and the next time it opens, it reads those preferences and displays it accordingly.
A 1/2 minute of google search seemed to have confirmed that.
Every windowed application will by default open on the default monitor and ACARS is no different. Unless it is specifically programmed to do otherwise.
However if a application is specifically programmed to 'remember' the user settings (as Safari is), then it tries it's best to act accordingly although this also does not work all of the times, specially when you keep on switching between "Multiple Monitor" and "Single Monitor Mode" e.g. if you are using a laptop and have a separate monitor at work / home.
Luke is in a better position to answer from here. Reading from post 2 in this thread, it seems that he is aware of the 'remember position' feature and has been trying to do that, although it does not seem to be working correctly, at-least in your case.
Best Regards,
Gurmeet

I guess in the next build, you should see this behaving nice.

Fixed in Build 97.
To quote Luke in the issue tracker:
