Hi everyone... I am having a lot of trouble with my FPS. I have a really high end machine... less than a year old. I have been running FSX pretty well for most of the time. But, in the past few weeks. my FPS have dropped. For example, I am flying at KSAW(a favorite airport), with the default cessna, and my FPS are terrible! I dont know exact framse per second, but Im agine trying to fly a slideshow... this FPS loss is mainly at airports wih snow on the ground in FSX(would this contribute?), anyway, please give me some tips for better FPS without having me to bring back my detail sliders too much! Here are me specs...
OS info:Windows Vista (64-bit)
GPU info:ATI Radeon HD 3450 256MB
CPU info:Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz, ~1302 Mhz
DirectX info:4.09.00.0904
Memory size:4096MB
Please help!

Another good example of why we need to keep FS9 alive. I have heard so many problems with FSX, and these people have very high end machines, so it tells me that FSX suffers from bad coding or a bad gaming engine that sucks the life out of even the best computers.

Michael, these are isolated issues. My new system is rocking default planes at between 120 and 300 FPS with all sliders maxed except for light bloom and shadows because they're huge hits.

I think its your video card. Not really that high end for that thing. I used to have it and had the same problems you have right now. I upgraded to the 4850, about 113 bucks on newegg plus another 50 for the power box. You're gonna have to do that if you want high fps.

Video card is a relatively minor component....it's CPU that dominates frames.
Mahmoud: something must have recently changed on your system. Look at your graphics sliders. AI traffic can be a killer (Nicholas has hit the biggest culprits). Try setting that to 0 and see what happens.
Also, check out NickN's tweaks on the simviation forums (http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1208959973)
I agree with you--3ghz E8400 ought to give good FPS. My Q6600 gets about 23-25 no problem.

Michael, Had a chat with some guys in the SEATTLE ARTCC about FSX recently. Microsoft no longer has a Flight Sim developement team. That being as such, I would expect FSX to be the last product in the line of Flight sim from Microsoft. FSX was designed with something like this in mind. The game will supersede most computer systems for atleast another 5-6 years. In that time, you will then be able to run any addon pack you want with everything set to Ultra High. The idea behind doing this was so they could provide a product that they know they will not be providing additional developement for that should last for another 8 years or longer. FSX is a HUGE resource hog, but in light of the road Microsoft went with FSX, I think it is for the better.

All the more reason to stay with what works FS9. I was a big FSX fan boy until I realized what it takes to make it work, and honestly I just don't have the deep pockets to make it work so FSX was a big waste of money for me. I wish they could have just tweaked FS9, that would have been a better idea.

Micheal, fsx does work, if you have an high end machine and know how to tune it. nothing wrong with the program, only a few glitches.

"Micheal, fsx does work, if you have an high end machine and know how to tune it. nothing wrong with the program, only a few glitches" you are right, but high end machines are expensive, so FSX is for those with deep pockets. I can make FS9 look like FSX and it will run faster with fewer problems, so FSX is not really the better simulator if you consider the over all cost and hassle factor, FS9 is a bargain. I would rather be flying than tweaking because my time is precious.

Guys, I get with my 2 year old system about 15 to 25 on FSX using the PIC 737, default settings meduim high.
http://www.deltava.org/pirep.do?id=0x7161f average 21.8
http://www.deltava.org/pirep.do?id=0x71630 average 24.2
http://www.deltava.org/pirep.do?id=0x7164d average 17.9
I often check ACARS reports to compare my FPS with what others claim they are getting. You know I can't really complain about those rates.
If you tweek around with the settings you might be suprised.

Michael "I would rather be flying than tweaking because my time is precious" -- kinda found this funny, because don't you have to spend generally MORE time to tweak FS9 to look like FSX?

I read reports all the time of people with monster machines only getting 20FPS, I get that now on my Jurassic computer, so after all that money spent, is it worth it? I was very disappointed when I loaded FSX onto my system, that if you went by the box specs should run fine, well that was a big lie, bitter yes. I love moving jet ways and cool rain effects, but I will have to use REX and FS9 to get that effect and 30 to 40 FPS on my new system I'm thinking of getting. yes I would rather fly than spend hours trying to get decent performance out of bloated poorly written software.

and yet another thread thrown way off course... how come we often turn threads either into debates about FSX and FS9 or debates between Boeing and airbus? Can we just answer the original question and move on?
Mahmoud, I know from experience that the Radeon 3450 is a piece of junk. It wouldn't even run fs9 for me if I wanted any clouds. Upgrading would be you best bet, as long as following the advice of Jack's post on tweaking. I upgraded to an ATI 4850 and got tremendous results.

I am one of those who started out with FSX and went to FS9. Today, after seeing Alan's screenshots on another post, I decided to get out the old FSX box and put it on my new computer. I did some tweaking here and there, used nhancer, and once again I was let down by FSX. It wasn't the framerates because I was getting between 25 and 50fps, it just did not look as good as FS9. I have spent so much time and money on Fs9 that it looks better to me than FSX. I have just about every payware and freeware airport and it looks great. I think there will always be room for FSX and FS9 in the flight simming world. They are two very good programs!

I remember the first time I fired up FS9 on my old $1400 Dell Dimension 8200....choppy frames, horrible slide show, blurry scenery except in a few areas, 3 fps around New York City, people screaming on all the bulletin boards. I said "What junk, I'm going back to FS2002".
Sound familiar?

Mahmoud, you might really benefit from a defrag too using a 3rd party defrag tool if you install alot of addons like me.
Lol @ Michael Pare: You get all of this addon software to make FS9 look like FSX, but a computer that can run FSX is too expensive? How do you manage that? Besides, I don't care what anyone says, FS9 will never look like FSX because it's coded differently. Upgrading from FS9 to FSX is like upgrading from freeware to payware.

Yes but FSX is coded so you need a NASA computer to run it well, sort of discouraging. I value performance over eye candy. If I was able to run FSX smoothly with no problems then I would like it, but so far I'm not impressed. If it will run on my future laptop then I will be impressed. I do have a lot invested in FS9 so yeah moving over to FSX and starting over doesn't make sense ether.

I can understand that, but high end games require high end computers. Just because games like Crysis Warhead have a hard time running on most computers, doesn't mean it wasn't put together well.

Yeah that is true, a game can suffer from poor coding because it was rushed out too early, FSX is an example, as it takes twice as much computer power to run it decently.

Michael, that is the biggest misconception! I don't even have a powerful computer running FSX right now and I am happy with the performance (2.4GHz Quad Core, 7GB RAM, and Nvidia 6150SE on board graphics). Properly tweaked, it's not too bad.
My new system runs constant 100+FPS with default aircraft, once I install the add-ons, we'll see.

Give it a few years and the prices will be dirt cheap on good hardware that will run FSX perfectly.
