Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB)
With a processor speed like that I doubt it will run FS9 very well. Unless you plan on overclocking, STAY AWAY!
Go with the dv7t series, NOT QUAD EDITION. Go for the Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9900 (3.06 GHz, 6 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB) with it, and make sure you get the 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 4650 NOT THE ONE FOR QUAD PROCESSORS. RAM is up to you aslong as you have it ABOVE 4GB since they don't offer a 32-bit operating system with it.

I was shooting for the i 7 processor, but if it won't even run FS9, than there is no chance of running FSX, sounds like The HP isen't so great after all. You just saved me $1200. I just don't have the room for a desktop. I am wondering why my old inspiron will run FS9 but the new faster laptop wont run it, that is pretty weird.

Michael, I think Nicholas' point was the clock speed of the CPU, not the fact that it is an I7 processor. 1.6 is pretty lame, unless you're using it to type memos in Word. I'll take that 3.06 Core 2 over a slow I7 any day.
HP wants 1200 bucks for that laptop? Yikes!
I know you're a staunch defender of FS9--IMHO it still has a ton of life, and you probably have a lot of $$$$ invested in add-ons to make it look nice. No reason to jump to FSX until you can get a really powerful machine, or until somebody builds an FSX only plane that you can't live without.
Then again, you could always build a small form-factor PC and stuff it full of power, and it will have nearly the same footprint as a laptop, for a lot less than 1200.

Michael, read the last part of my post. That's an ideal laptop for what you need and it's not too expensive.

Windows 7 home premium has an XP mode and I thought that the i 7 processor could handle fs9 as it is not to demanding, my p4 processor handles it ok. I was wondering if 1.6 GHZ is acutely faster in that chip as it is multiple cores.

If you're running FS9, that's a no. FSX can use multiple cores, but I believe FS9 is restricted to only being able to use one. One big misconception many people have about multi-core processors is that they combine to some ultimate 6GHz+ single core, which is wrong. If a software program is written to utilize many cores, it uses 4 different cores at the same speed, instead of one combined huge speed.
Your P4 is probably 3.2GHz or 3.0GHz, getting an i7 at 1.6GHz would be a SIGNIFICANT downgrade from your current system. All truth be told, the i5 is actually better for flight simming when it's overcocked.
Using Alienware (AS A HORRIBLE EXAMPLE because they're too overpriced) they offer the i7 mobile in their laptops, but they overclock it before shipping it to you because they know 1.6Ghz is ridiculously low. Intel Core i7 920XM 2.0GHz (3.2GHz) is what they sell you in their highest end laptop. If you feel like overclocking it, then by all means, do it, then it's a performance boost over other processors.

I am running a 1.8 P4 right now, so FSX would work better with this processor?

FSX would work better with the i7 overclocked than the 1.8GHz P4. Or the dual core system I described would be best since overclocking mobile processors can be a pain.

Pare, why don't you buy an micro atx case, a m-atx x58 board, the I7920 , a good after market cpu cooler, gtx 275,3gigs of 1333mhz ddr3 tri channel and the corsair 750HX and you will be set that will be small , portable and easily handle fsx maxed out all in a m-atx case, our you could get the coolermaster storm scout which is a medium case but is built for lan party's.

Shaun, when he says space is at a premium, a laptop is best because it's also portable. Are you going to cary that Micro ATX on to a plane and plug it in into nonexistent ports and do some web browsing or something? NO!
Also, 3GB of RAM is far too little for todays day and age. Plus a GTX275 and an i7920 would be way too much for a 750Watt power supply. He may also enjoy the convenience of a pre-built P.C.

Michael, that's correct. Be sure to get the Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9900 (3.06 GHz, 6 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB) and the 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 4650 for optimum FS performance.

Michael, he was talking about gaming. Flight Simming is totally different. Flight Sim is processor dependent, the quad editions of their laptops come with better graphics cards which most GAMES rely on. Honestly, go with the dv7t, you won't be disappointed as you would be with the dv8t Quad Edition.
