I've recently attain more free time to fire up the sims again. But I'm on a pc will horrible components to run fsx. Right now, with sliders all the way down, i'm getting about 15fps. (try not to laugh). I need to figure out will it be worth upgrading or should I just flat out buy a gaming pc?
Specs of the current Pc:
Compaq Presario
AMD Sempron Processor 3200+ (Speed 1803 MHz )
1.80 GHz 448MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6150
If more information is needed, let me know. Thanks

Definitely a new one. You have no hope of updating to anything decent with a motherboard capable of holding the OLD Semprons.

i would say that when buying a new one look for one that runs FSX well that does not mean the most high end items . ive have freinds go out and buy the best processors and video cards and all they get is 25 FPS also if you dont want to spend taht much money and get a good flight sim FPS try using FS9 i get about 70 FPS on it and i just had to buy a new power supplie and VID car for my computer

Build it. You can get by with a less than state of the art motherboard (don't need SLI or wifi capabilities for FSX) as long as it works for the CPU family and RAM (DDR2 vs DDR3) you want. In my opinion, get the best dual core CPU you can afford and start with 4G of RAM, and spend the 50 bucks on a good aftermarket cooler (that was my mistake) and overclock it (not hard--your motherboard should supply a utility for that). I'm not current on the video card tech, so maybe someone else can help. I don't think you need a topnotch card...unless you're also running the latest FPS or RTS games. Unless you're a stickler for sound, you can save a few bucks for now and use the onboard sound and then add a card later.
I agree with Danyal...you don't need to spend 3,000 bucks on a PC to run FSX. Looking on Newegg just now, the setup I built about 18 months ago could be had for about $800, including the OS (which cost an outrageous $139). I peg FSX at 25 fps and consistently exceed 20 on the ground. If I switch to unlimited frames, I pull 50 or more in the air.
A bunch of folks have built their own...I'm a mechanical nightmare, and I built mine in about 2 hours no problems. I'll never buy another PC again.

Newegg is the best. Although I recently got a brand new rig for about 2,400 bucks from them, I keep updating my wish list in NewEgg to keep up with the times so next time I upgrade it's right there. Here's what I have in there for 2,242.92 bucks
Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W (Overclock it of course)
Palit GTX 285 2GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
XCLIO 1200W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply
Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000HLFS 300GB 10000 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Of course you can add your own case and other accessories for more. This is EXTEMELY similar to my system that, through preliminary testing, I get consistently over 100FPS in FSX with all settings max in default planes.

Thanks for the responses guys, I'm really leaning towards the build now. The only game I run is FSX and the surrounding add ons (i.e. acars, vasfmc for my freeware) So I need a pc that will run fsx best. How do I find out what would run fsx specifically the best. I'm looking to spend under 1k for it total if possible.

Armanti, there is no way you can spend under 1k for a full rig to run FSX even half descent. What I posted up above gives you THE MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. 2.2k is cheap for a rig like that, buy that prebuilt and you're looking at almost 4k for it.

I have an ASUS motherboard P5Q with 3 gigs of RAM and the Intel E8400 processor along with the Nvidia 9800 GTX video card. I built this pc myself (1st ever build) and it cost me under $700. I run FSX on it along with MADDOG 08, REX, Ultimate Terrain X and with settings maxed I consistently average about 20 FPS which is just fine. I think you can get a decent system that runs FSX just fine without having to spend $2000, but that is just my opinion. Nicholas, I saw in your log book that you average about 8-9 fps during your flights. Are those with a different system then you are tallking about in this post? Thanks!!

Eric, it's apparent you haven't read my other posts on this subject. I built the build I am talking about approximately 3 weeks ago. I am EXTREMELY busy with school this year and have found next to no time to toy with it. I still haven't found time to get my add-ons on it and run the tweaks again. I am hoping to do that all this week since I'm off.
The 8-9 FPS you see are based off some old horrific AMD 2.3GHz quad core, 7GB of RAM, and an onboard Nvidia 6150SE graphics THING.
I can't wait to get testing my new system with all the add-ons on it, etc.

Ok, I didn't see anywhere in this post that you were using an older computer, but I figured that was the case since I noticed low frame rates. 8-9 FPS definitely makes FSX rough to use. Post pictures when you get the new CPU up and running so I know what I will be looking at for my next build. Once you build your own CPU and save a ton of money I have found that I am looking forward to building my next one already.

You do NOT need to spend mega bucks to run FSX decently....anything more than about 25 fps is wasted. A 100 fps frame rate is completely useless, except for maybe bragging rights in the Water Cooler. Again, mine was about 1K when I got it (note: does not include monitor, since people typically have a spare one handy).
Not only that, when my system occasionally "bogs down" to 17-18 fps, it is usually at a detailed airport when I'm taxiing. That frame rate is just fine when you're doing 15 knots.
